It would not be at all hard to catch up on the first 2 seasons of Mad Men because each is only about 13 episodes long. They are long, full, heavily detailed episodes in terms of period detail, historical detail and character development, but still only about 13. Catch it on DVD.
I enjoy the program very much. Season 1 was very hard to watch and I almost had to force myself to remain seated and not throw rocks at the TV. The gender politics of the period infuriate me. Hard to tolerate. However, it is exactly the slow but steady crumbling of the old gendered roles that interests me so much in season 2 and which made it so watchable.
I do not think John Hamm deserves an Emmy for his role. He barely quirks an eyebrow. I was glad he did not receive the Emmy just because this show is currently so "hot". Also, quite honestly, I think the actresses outshine the actors in this show. I think the achievement of Hugh Laurie in House, where he carries the entire show, speaks constant medicalese and in a perfect US accent, is far greater. However, I do believe that Mathew Weiner deserves all the awards and accolades the public, critics and entertainment industry can throw at him. He worked so hard to get this show made, touting his pilot around for years before it got accepted. He works hard with every script to make sure the representation of the historical period is as authentic as possible, with regards to wardrobe, dialogue culture, bodily posture and behaviour, the relationships between men and women, the sets, etc. Weiner's OCD tendencies are paying dividends.
Definitely a show to watch and think about at length. That does not mean it is the most enjoyable show out there, just that it is an interesting and I think important piece of TV drama. Its artistic achievement is great.
