Do any of you exercise on carpeting?

Hi all,
I need help and advice with a decision regarding where I workout.
Right now I workout in my living room on my hardwood floor. I have a thick coat of poly on it and I'm having a hard time with the step moving around on me because the rubber feet don't stick to the slick floor. I'm concentrating more on keeping myself from slipping than I am on what I'm doing! I've even used a carpet pad on the bottom of the step, but that hasn't helped. I'm thinking of moving my workouts to a room that has carpeting. I'm concerned though about my feet getting caught on the carpet while doing Cathe's intricate step moves. The carpet is not very thick, it's old and mushed down, but it's still a considered a plush carpet (it's not one of those flat carpets like berber). Do any of you workout on a carpet like this, or have you had any experiences with it? If I need to I'm willing to tear out the carpet in that room and put in flooring, but I'd rather not if I don't have to. Or, does anyone have an idea on how I can make the step stick to my floor and not move around on me?
Thanks a lot!!!

I work out on Travertine tile and it is also very slippery. I wipe each of the 4 rubber feet with a wet towel before putting them down and it actually works. It keeps them in place for an entire workout or 2. I'm not sure if you'd have the same results with your wood floors but I thought I'd let you know my solution so you can try it if you want. I have tried working out in one of my rooms with carpet and don't like it at all. It just doesn't feel the same to me as a hard surface - like I can't get as bouncy or jump as well. I'm probably just imagining but anyway....Good Luck!!

I too also exercise on carpeting. I can lift weights and do step/floor aerobics provided I wear good sneakers. And no you won't trip on the plush carpeting doing Cathe's intricate step moves. When I was first learning Cathe's step routines, I ended up tripping on the step itself LOL!!!

Have you tried one of those sticky yoga mats to put under your step on hardwood floors? Those mats are pretty slip resistant.

Hope that helps!

I work out on short pile carpeting and don't have any trouble with my feet getting tangled up or sticking. Course, back in the 70's we had that lovely avocado long shag carpeting (actually used a rake on it). That stuff could possibly reach out and grab you.

What about that sticky fabric stuff that you can cut and put in cabinets and drawers? I cut pieces of it and put in my dining room chairs to hold the cushions still. Wonder if that would work under the step?

Hi there. I work out on carpeting (and always have when at home) and have never had a problem. I also have cut burber that is a long shag.

I workout on carpet(plush area rug) and have never had a problem. When I workout to other dancier instructors, sometimes the turns on the floor are a little difficult, but nothing major.

I work out on plush carpet, although, I have really pounded the carpet fibers down from all my stepping and jumping and shuffling, etc. LOL! (It's a big area rug, easily replaced) Anyway, I don't have any trouble with my feet getting caught - there are some pivot moves that I have to modify because I don't want to tweak my knees, but otherwise no troubles.

I work out on carpet. I don't have any problems.

I even do yoga on the carpet without my sticky mat.

I workout on a thick plush carpet. The only time I seem to have a problem is with some kickboxing moves, where you twist around in a circle.

I work out on carpet, too. It's not thick or plush, but it's still carpet. I've learned to adapt my pivots and things so I don't hurt my knees, but I've never had a problem with it.

I workout on carpet too and have never had a problem. Although, as someone else mentioned this carpet has been beaten down. I even slide on it when I'm barefoot and trying to do SM. I will have to get a sticky mat for stretching and my new yoga DVD, but my step doesn't slide around. It's my "yucky" room with the "yucky" carpet. Tee hee.

Thanks to all of you who gave me such great answers and info! I feel so much better and I've made the decision to move on upstairs! My carpet is pretty mushed down too, so from what many of you have said I should be fine.
