Direct TV

Went to Best Buy today and they were doing a big promo there for Direct TV. We are tempted to try it because it will be cheaper than our current plan with Cox. I've had cable for soooo long it makes me a little nervous to switch. Anybody have any recommendations?

We've had them for years too - no complaints here either. :) (They occasionally reward us with a free pay per view movie, or things like that - for being loyal customers - doesn't seem like many do that anymore - it's all about getting new folks signed up for most companies....)

Hope that helps!

I have no complaints with Direct TV when it works. My service goes out in inclement weather (rain storms, snow storms, etc). Also in a really bad wind storm or very windy weather the dish may go out of alignment. I was upset with them because now they charge for realigning the dish.

I had DirectTV for about a year only because I had to. They were fine but for me living in apartments it is not feasible. I can't stand having a dish particularly when they have to drill into the walls. I have Cox cable and it works great for me.

Have you tried negotiating with Cox, they might match the price if they want to prevent from losing customers? I do remeber with DirecTV that the new customer prices only lasted for 12 months and then it went back up.

I have had Direct TV for about 3-4 years now and I have the HD dish. Even with inclement weather, I do get a signal. Love the channels and I discover more all the time. Just like a previous post, I do get free movies once in awhile. In my area, Direct TV beats out Dish Network and cable easily.

I'm in the minority here- we had it for a VERY short period of tme and hated it!! For us, the programming wasn't great and desipite many phone calls to customer service to complain we still got hit with a $250.00 cancellation charge!! We also live in the trees and have pretty extreme weather at times and the reception was not good. (this was about four years ago).

We went back Comcast/Xfinity and I will NEVER change again! As one other posted suggested, always, always re-negotiate with cable. They don't want to lose your business to a competitor.

Here are some things I do to keep my bill in check. Call the regular customer service and have them unbundle your package completely(if you do bundle). Then have them go back and re-calculate your bill. My bill is always much
more reasonable after that. Even once they give you a price quote- ask them if they can do better than that. Usually they can. Don't believe them if they say you can't call back and renogiate for a certain period of time... YES you can!

IF for some reason the person you are speaking to claims they can't do anything- tell them you want to speak to someone who can help you. That ususally works and helps them get creative. If that fails call back and ask for "Advanced Customer Service". Works EVERY time!

I also remind them that we have been loyal customers for years and how I would hate to have them lose such a loyal following!

Good luck... and let me know if you need any other help!

I love Direct TV! We can't get cable here, so no high speed Internet. I say go for it! There customer service is top notch!

My experience was terrible as well. No extreme weather, trees, etc -the service was just terrible. We switched to Verizon Fios and its awesome. No problems at all.

Same here. One drop of rain would fall from the sky, I'd lose service. BTW jacmar, I believe DirecTV is owned by Verizon. I tried Fios after DirecTV. The HD box went on the fritz about 2 weeks after I got it. I spent a total of 27 hours on the phone or sitting waiting for a service tech who never showed up. One week without cable. Dude finally showed on a Sunday am, when I was at the gym & when I DID NOT have an appt.

Went back to traditional cable (Cablevision to be exact) & haven't had a problem in 4 years (knock wood--if my cable is out when I get home tonight you're in big trouble! LOL!).

I've had both Directv and Dish Network. In our area DN is much less expensive, offers more channels, and we have had very few issues with them. DTV got pretty expensive after a while and really didn't want to work with us to reduce costs so we switched. We usually end up switching every 5 years or so to take advantage of the new deals. Only when you call them to cancel service do they (both DTV & DN) really seem to want to help you out. I know we had a discussion on the board a while ago and many of the big football fans like DTV better b/c they offer more in the way of sports coverage.....but I don't know much about that.

I had Cox cable, and switched to DTV in May. Cox was getting outrageous in the pricing, and they really have no competition here. DTV had a good deal for 2 years, which a whole house DVR, free HD, and more channels. I really don't care about the DVR, but it was part of the deal. I will keep them for two years and then see what happens. I had DTV about 10 years ago when I fist built my house, and it was a great picture even then, but it did go out a lot during bad weather. They tell me it is supposed to be better now, but it has briefly gone out several times during bad storms lately. Oh well, when it goes out, I watch Netflix.

Now Cox keeps calling me two times a day trying to get me to come back.
