Department store or discount store makeup?

In an effort to save some money during these tough economic times, I'm considering switching from my current cosmetics (Estee Lauder) to something from Target. Although, I love the skin care I usually purchase less expensive color cosmetics from Mary Kay, Mac or Sonia Kushak. But, I'm wondering is there a really good skin care program out there that's not so expensive? Or, do you save money elsewhere and not compromise on your make-up? I will also add that 40 is approaching in a few months... so skin care is very important to me. I hope that doesn't sound as bad as it sounds...

Thanks!
Terri
P.S. I'm also looking for a really good shampoo...has anyone tried L'Oreal Color Vive? I hate to admit I purchase salon shampoo...

I believe that Estee Lauder owns L'Oreal, so if you buy that makeup, I don't believe you'll be travelling "too far from home", if that makes sense. :)

I use nothing but "drugstore" makeup from because I've been able to find the most flattering stuff for my skin. Every time I've ever used the expensive stuff i've been disappointed, especially with lipstick, where you have to try a lot of products to get exactly the right color, texture, and level of opacity. As I said to someone here last week, the beauty of "drugstore" makeup is you can afford to buy more and, thus, play around with colors and formulas until you are completely satisfied - for a fraction of the cost. The one big drawback: those "drugstore" compacts don't hold up well in your purse.

I'm very particular about lipstick, foundation, and mascara and can't say enough about Sonia Kashuk (Target) lipstick, Cover Girl green-label fragrance-free foundation, Cover Girl mascara (in the fat orange tube) and Almay eyeliner. When it comes to things like blush and eye shadow all I care about is getting the colors right.

I just wanted to chime in and say I have used Boots (brand) from Target and liked the skin care line. I did try a lipstick and liked it and my daughter uses their foundation.

I love anything by L'Oreal and think their products are just as good as Lancome which they also own. My personal preference for foundations is to buy Bobbi Brown and get a good match and then go find something close to it at the drugstore. Estee Lauder makes the American Beauty line of cosmetics sold at Kohl's - cheaper prices but just as good as Estee and you can try the colors at the counter which is nice.

I tried Color Vive shampoo just last week and didn't care for it. What is love is Pureology but it is so expensive! It does great on my color treated hair! My daughter has good success with Pantene Classic from the drugstore.

not only does estee lauder own l'oreal, but i saw a tv show (a loooong time ago) that said that most of the major brands own a drugstore "counterpart." i am sure you could do a search and find out which ones. i thought that was very interesting...

i also am one that was exclusive to department store brands (really, mostly trish mcevoy), but started using drug store brands and really saw little difference with most of them. i especially like revlon and loreal.

I used to do department store makeup but I thought that I was just spending too much on it so I switched to drugstore makeup. I really like Sally Hansen's Natural Beauty line. This is the line of makeup products by Carmindy (from What Not to Wear). I really like them a lot. I think that I am saving money, but since the drugstore stuff is so cheap I tend to buy more than I should

Actually, Estee does not own Loreal, but anyway, I stick to the cheaper cosmetics. When estee is on sale I like some of her bases, but can find stuff at Walmart or Target to keep my spending down. There are some fragrance, though, that I do buy at the dept store: My newest is Burberry.

I use Burt's Bees day cream, eye cream and night cream, and it's the best stuff I've ever tried. Love love love it, and it's much cheaper than the department store skincare. (I used to use Estee Lauder and Clinique when I was growing up.) For foundation, I use Neutrogena, and I love it too. My mom still gets lots of Estee Lauder and Clinique, so she gives me the gifts that come with them so I still use their eyeshadow and blush.

All this to say, I really prefer Neutrogena and Burts Bees over any department store brand --hands down.

Thank you for all the advice. I'll check out Revlon and L'oreal for color cosmetics - what about skin care? I'm looking for really good anti-aging products.
