Crossfit anyone?

I stumbled across this on youtube when I was looking up the '13 minute workout'. I guess I am in a bubble because I had never heard of it before. It looks tough but intriguing. So I was wondering if any of you had done any crossfit.

I have done a few crossfit workouts. You can go to their website and get a ton of information along with the WOD (Workout of the Day) I have mixed feelings about the workouts. There are some moves I feel are contraindicated (safety issues) but there is no doubt these workouts will kick butt and whip you into shape. I am 48 and can do a lot of the workouts, i have trouble with really low squat snatches and thrusts. My 24 year old co-worker does one crossfit workout a week and she has seen great results.

Hi Rachel - I've been incorporating CrossFit WODs into my routine for about the past 1 1/2 years or so. There are a few of us here in Catheland who play around with it.

The workouts offer me a physical and mental challenge that I hadn't encountered before, and have actually pushed me to try new things that I wouldn't have tried before. I love it.

The main site has a "How to start" page that's helpful: http://www.crossfit.com/cf-info/start-how.html

Besides the main site WOD of the day www.crossfit.com, other CF affiliates also post their own WODs which can be lots of fun. Here are some that I've pulled from in the past:
New Jersey CrossFit (kettlebell specialists, you may have to sign up to get the WODs but they're cool) - http://www.newjerseycrossfit.com/
CrossFit 603 - http://www.crossfit603.com
CrossFit One World - http://www.crossfitoneworld.com/

Most of these sites have blogs that better explain their WODs than the main site often does and the offer methods for modifcation, scaling up, working skills, etc. One thing to bear in mind is that the WOD should be scaled to your abilities...they should be very, very challenging, but you shouldn't hurt yourself. :)

HTH.

Beware of Burpees!! I always think I can knock these out. I go from "cocky" to "ready to yak" in a very short period of time.

ITA with everything Gayle said.

I do Crossfit-style workouts twice a week. I usually go to the affiliate page and pull their workouts. Besides the ones Gayle mentioned. I like the following sites:

http://www.bulldog-crossfit.com/
http://www.atomiccrossfit.com/

I really like the intensity of these workouts and that you can get alot done in a short amount of time. I have a big backyard and do these workouts outside. I have seen good results and enjoy the challenge.

There's a very balanced article about Crossfit over at T-Nation.com. I tried to cut-and-pasted the article address but couldn't get it to show up here as a link. Still, it's really worth reading. If you go over to T-Nation.com, type "Crossfit" in the search box, there's a list of articles. Click on the Chris Shugart article "The Truth About Crossfit." It's long, but VERY informative. Pretty funny, too.

I did the CF "beginners" rotation for a month, lost several pounds and got the best post-baby abs I've ever had :) I also took several classes at 2 different local affiliates. Try to go to a class if you can; usually the first one is free (although they are usually more expensive than a chain gym) and the group encouragement and instruction really makes it fun. Often they have kettlebell training as well.

That T-Nation article is a good one. Crossfit is pretty controversial, but I don't pay any mind to the drama or politics of the main site. The local affiliates and web sites are where it's at; they're good folks who push you just enough but not too far.

Thanks for al the info. I am still on the fence about it though. Not because of the drama but because I usually workout in the morning, I am afraid I might be wiped out afterwards. I have a tough job that most days requires lots of energy. I was thinking that I might try to incorporate a crossfit workout once a week in the evening though for added bonus. Then the issue is on what day though. I do sts 3 days and cardio 3 days so I do not know if it would be better suited for a cardio day or an sts day. For those of you who have done it, How do you incorporate it.

Hi Rachel - If you want to just get your feet wet, I'd sub a CrossFit WOD (something that's more met-con focused than strength focused) for one of your cardio days and see how you like it.

You might be able to find a crossfit gym near you--there's one a few blocks from me & I did a week's trial membership. The workouts kicked my butt! They were very different & a lot of fun.

I wanted to get a membership to supplement my gym membership--my plan was to go once a week on Saturdays--but the price was absolutely outrageous. The full time membership was $250 a month, the w/e membership was $150 a month. I refused to pay that kind of money for two reasons:

1) I'm already paying $80 a month for a gym membership, for which I get much much more for much much less money
2) The cost wasn't justified. The gym was in a filthy old auto service garage, there was very little equipment, no air conditioning, & only 2 employees. Why on earth are they charging that kind of money when they have almost no overhead?

Anyway, those are my thoughts, for what it's worth. I've never done the WODs, but the crossfit gym rocked. I would've def. joined if the price wasn't so insane.

I guarantee you we have no crossfit gym around here. Small town you know. We are just now getting an Anytime Fitness in the largest town near us if that tells you anything.
That is an unjustifiable price though from what I have seen on the net there doesn't seem to be much equipment needed and the workouts don't seem to take long. So I don't balme you for not joining.

I think I will check out the WOD's and see what comes of it.
