Credit Report?

Hello Cathe forums:) I wanted to do a credit report but not sure where to start. I know their is a coupe website out there but wanted to know if any of you have done a credit report online and where? I think I really need to do this just to see what is on there. TIA:)

I could be wrong but I thought it was equifax?? There are 3 different burueas to get reports from. The names have changed over the years so I don't recall them. If you do a google search, they should come up. You should check all three of the main ones.

We are currently buying a house and all three of the reports are slightly different.

Barbara, you do get one free report a year. I would steer clear of the online ones and sometimes they are not very accurate. There are three major credit reporting agencies in the country. Equifax @ equifax.com, or you can call them toll free at 1-800-685-1111, Experian @ (obviously) experian.com, 1-888-397-3742 and Trans Union @ (you guessed it) transunion.com @ 1-800-888-4213.

Hope this helps

Thanks guys:) I knew I can ask you anything and you would have answers. Did anybody ever do it online?

I guess we post at the same time. But anyway that is one of the reason I want to do a credit report because I want to cancled all the cc I have which I really don't need and who knows what cc I have on file.

Hi Anne, I just wanted to thank you for you info because I did punch in Annual Credit report and did my and my husband and OMG I have alot of calling to do with the cc company to cancledx(. Thanks again:)

Actually, Susie Ormond (?) suggests NOT cancelling credit cards, as it can negatively affect your credit rating because you will then have less credit available to credit used.

This is true. The more available credit you have, the higher your credit score.

Don't cancel the cards, just keep the balance low.

I tried doing it online and each of the 3 services found an excuse not to provide the info online but gave me an address to follow up with. I had to wait a little while but I was happy with the service.

Since I chose the free reports I did not get my "score" they wanted me to buy a subscription and then they'd provide a bunch of services that I didn't care for.

You'll be suprised by how far they go back. I'd forgotten some of those accounts.

That's interesting Sue. Maybe it's different for every individual.

My credit score just went up when I added another card, but didn't charge anything. Mortgage lenders might see that as potential debt, but for some reason it made my credit score go up by 10 points!

Equifax also has a tool where you can see what happens with your score if you do certain things. It will tell you what your score would be if you added another card, paid down a balance etc.

So, maybe it's different for everyone.

Barb, maybe you can try that tool on the website. It will tell you how to increase your score.

Good luck!

go to www.freecreditreport.com . It's easier to go through them. If you go through one of the three companies (at least with Equifax), they seem to make it really difficult to find how to get the free credit report you are legally entitled to.

Yes, that's exactly what I'd heard - more credit available to you puts you at a higher risk for going into debt. This person also said that when you take advantage of free financing for x days/months to buy furniture, for example, you are in fact, opening up a credit account with whatever financial institution the store uses. They usually issue you a card shortly after your purchase to encourage you to make future purchases at that store. After the x days/months is up and the amount is paid off, you should cancel the card.

Hi!

As a banker who does home euity loans on a daily basis. I would get a check on your report from all three. In my experience personally and working for my customers to put together loan packages; Equifax and Experian are more consumer oriented than TransUnion. They will go the extra mile to correct errors you find on your report so that things are clean and you get your score on the upward track. TransUnion is industry oriented (banks and lending companies)and 9 times out of 10 is the low ball score. The banks use Transunion because of this so that they can justify charging you more for the loan. I know there are some that say their score from Transunion is high. But out of the three Transunion will low ball your score. When there are discrepensies work with Equifax and Experian to correct. When the correction happens with them. Check the Transunion report because they will not make the correction (even though it is out there)unless you write them and present proof of correction from the other two. I hope your experience is an uneventful one.

I was told not to have too much open credit.
Also I had thrown cards away . Do you want sonme hacker out there getting your NUMBERS.
I had well over 200 thosand in credit cards.
I took them down to 1 -20,000. Card and 1- 10,000 line of credit for the business.
I sure don't want to charge more than that!!!! on frivelous things.
Oh and it is a fight to cancel cards. Discover was the worst.
