Does anyone here like asparagus for their vegies? I do, but have never made it at home. How do you cook it? (duh!)

Thanks!!
Have a great week!

I toss it in the microwave for 5 minutes sprinkle on a little salt and chow down.

Yes ma'am! I LOVE asparagus. I tend to like drizzling a touch of olive oil, lemon juice, and even a little garlic powder or other seasonings. Put them in the oven at 450 and start with ten minutes. Check crispness. Shouldn't need but a minute or 2 longer if that.

Steam for a couple minutes in my steamer or drizzle with olive oil (and any seasonings you like) and grill on the george forman ! Is done FAST!! Should be dark green and still crunchy. (at least that's how I like it) .:9

The are the best the way Debbie makes them. Just make sure you don't cook them too long. Oops, that's what I did the first time. They were quite crunchy!

I've also done them in the microwave and then drain any water and add olive oil and lemon juice and a little garlic salt and pepper. :9

I've gotten out of the habit of adding fats to my veggies. I've really learned to love them plain (maybe with a little salt or lemon if I have one laying around.)

Thanks Y'all!
so when you do them in the microwave do you add water in the dish? When you do them in the oven is it on a baking sheet or pan or what?? Sorry about all the questions, I was just at a loss on how to begin!!

I don't add any water when I microwave my veggies. I put a lid on them though. Now that I think about it, 5 minutes might be a little too long. Try 3 and then check to see if they're cooked enough and then put in for another minute or two if you want them cooked more.

I put them on a cookie sheet covered with aluminum foil, spray them with some olive oil spray, sprinkle them with garlic powder and pepper and broil them. I just keep an eye on them and when they start to get done on one side I flip them over. DH and I really like them this way because the tips get nice and crispy. I used to steam them, but now I only make them this way.

Grilled on a grill pan or indoor grill with a little olive oil is my favorite way to prepare.

I steam them and put a bit of lemon juice on.

But asparagus makes my pee smelly! (Just thought everyone would like to know that! There is somewhat of a controversy as to whether some people react to asparagus in this way and others don't. Or whether it's that some people can smell it and others can't.).

Another way to enjoy asparagus is after you have cooked with whatever seasonings you want - put on ice and chill in fridge. Then later chop and serve in your favorite salad! YUM!

I've never had a smelly pee problem other than my pee smelling like normal pee. Maybe not everyone has this problem.

This is all great!! Thanks everyone...I am going to make some tonight. Any tips on what to look for when you are buying it fresh? The ones I bought seemed really light green; does that matter?

I have found the little skinny ones are much more tender than the fat ones. Also instead of cutting off the ends, just take one in your hands and towards the bottom, gently bend it and it will snap off ! Do the same with the rest. No cutting necessary!;-)

I have found the above tip really works (I think I read about it in "Hints from Heloise".

FWIW, also, when you bring them home from the grocery store, cuts the very ends off and store them upright in a tall-enough container in a bit of water.

P.S. We always spray ours with a bit of olive oil and seasoned salt and broil them. Tasty!
