for those who have given up artificial sweetners, what do you do for coffee in the morning? im so used to pouring splenda in it but i need to get off the splenda. i'm having a hard time without it but i do really like coffee. What do you guys use? i don't want to use agave or anthing with cals in it and i find stevia to be odd tasting. suggestions?

Give up coffee! :eek::eek::eek:

Just kidding!:D

I have cut down to one splenda per cup myself. I have tried the new stevia products in the supermarket and they are okay. Just not sure if they are actually any better for you then splenda. If they are I would be willing to make the switch.

Splenda didn't taste right to me at first either but then I got used to it. I'll bet if you use stevia for a week it won't taste funny to you anymore. Just a thought.

i only use skim milk anymore. took some time to adjust but now its all i prefer. even at my mom's i can't use her creamers i reach for the milk. can't say why it worked for me i guess its b/c i really can't function without coffee so i would rather have just milk then no coffee at all LOL

I wish I could use skim milk in my coffee. I think I'd rather go sweetner free then use skim milk. LOL I prefer half n half (regular, fat free or low fat-it doesn't matter) or at the very least, 2% milk. I also LOVE the flavored creamers by International Delight but then I drink even MORE coffee cause it tastes too good! :p

I agree with Wendy, if you try stevia a few times it probably won't taste funny anymore. Also, have you tried the dunkin donuts coffee? The vanilla flavor is so darn good it doesn't even need sweetener, just black is good.

I used to drink coffee with cream and sugar. Now I drink it black. I just pick a really really good quality coffee, usually flavoured, and I don't need to add anything to it. In fact, cream and sugar now tastes icky to me.

Was just thinking of this this morning, I want to cut back on sweeteners, but that's going to be tough for me, I drink a lot of my water lately with powder mix ins, and by doing so, am not enjoying plain water as much now. But I found that in an 8 ounce cup of coffee, 1 tsp of agave syrup at 20 calories really is sweet enough for me. I had also switched over to Truvia (one of the new mass marketed Stevia products) and taste wise, I like it.

I switched to straight black, sometimes flavored, sometimes not. I was using Coffeemate/International Delight creamers, but those have some funky stuff in them, even though they are tasty. I moved to 1 cup black, and 1 cup with creamer, and then switched to 2 cups black. Every now and then I will have cream and sugar in my coffee, maybe once every couple months. Only if I happen to have cream leftover from cooking something. I only buy it for special ocassions. Then I use 1 Tbs cream and 1 1/2 tsp sugar. Comes out to around 70 cals and 5 grams of fat for a cup. High, I know, but it tastes sooooo much better than the fake stuff. And its only once in a blue moon. But I drink it black the rest of the time. Try adding a sprinkle of cinnamon to the coffee in the basket when you brew it. It will give the coffee a nice sweet cinnamon flavor and you won't have spice floaties in your coffee. Apple pie and pumpkin pie spice taste good too. Any of the "sweet" spices.

Kareiv, I've got a little thread like this running in the food and nutrition forum.

Nan's got an interesting idea there with putting spice in with the coffee to brew, I'll have to try that.

I bought a box of Truvia and I agree that it does taste a little odd. But all these sweetners taste a little odd, you do get used to them. I find that the Truvia is a bit less sweet than the Splenda was and I find myself adding more.

Still looking for some kind of alternative to light cream. I love it but the fat grams are high. I can deal with the fat free half and half but it's got oddball additives.

I'm planning on trying that mimicreme which sounds like a concentrated nut milk.

So, I don't really have any answers for you, I'm in the same boat. Trying to find healthy alternatives without feeling deprived. As always it's a balance.

I mix a one scoop of this click in my large1.5 cup coffee before a workout.

I am completely addicted to the moca flavor and froth. I pour a large cup of hot coffee in my blender with one scoop and blend on low/medium. It is soooo good! No more splenda for me:D

I'm with Morningstar. Get a really great quality coffee and you won't miss the sweeteners. It may take a week or two to get used to, but when you do, you'll forget all about the sweeteners.

This is what I do as well...I drink good coffee but always black!

I avoid artificial sweeteners like the plague. Instead I put a bit of agave nectar in my coffee, especially now that I've cut back on regular sugar. I used to put 4 teaspoons in my coffee!

I love my coffee, black as black can be. The true taste of coffee is fabulous. But, get good coffee, not Folgers or something like that. I get Starbuck beans and freshly mill it every morning. Can't get better than that.

Just curious why you want to give up the splenda? I love my splenda. I buy the pre packed stuff and just use one packet for every cup of joe.

I also wanted to give up the artificial sweeteners and cream in my coffee, so now I add some soy milk, plain, instead of milk and sugar. It adds some sweetness and also that rich creaminess like I used to get with cream, but way fewer calories and generally cleaner. Now that I have gotten used to it, I don't miss the sweetener at all. And of course, you could always use vanilla or chocolate soy milk for an added treat.

I use one drop of liquid stevia in my tea and it's perfect. Not too sweet. I can never gauge how much splenda to use, as one packet is way too much for me. Same with agave...I just can't judge how much to use.

For those that like stevia, did you know that they have flavored liquid stevia? http://www.buywisdom.com/products.asp?dept=2 I just saw that at the Vitamin Cottage the other day!

I've weaned down my sweetener. I'll put 1/2 splenda packet in a BIG cup of coffee. It takes some getting used to, but I have grown used to the 1/2 packet. I'm thinking eventually , I can go sweetener free all together!

thanks all of you for your tips. I did just order the vanilla flavored stevia drops so when i get them and try them out i will let you know how it is. i'm just trying to get away from splenda. i keep reading not so good things about it and im finding that the more i eat of the fake stuff, my body doesn't recognize true sweetness in cookies and cakes which makes me over eat them. i'm finding that with each month of using splenda i'm eating more and more of it to satisfy my sweet cravings which in turn makes me eat more. And i'm also realizing that i never binge on real healthy clean foods, its always processed, fake sugar foods. i'm just trying to eat clean. i have to say that jillian micheals new book is really opening my eyes to things and i think its a great read for anyone interested in the response of hormones and processed foods.
