Code Orange

I live in the Washington, D.C. area. Am I the only one feeling slighly stressed by the Code Orange imposed by the government? Am I the only one loading up on water, duct tape, and plastic sheeting for windows? This reminds me of when I was a kid and at school we practiced for nuclear attacks by hiding under our desks.

Rhonda: I understand how you must be feeling. My husband is here in Germany with the Army in a specialty that is directly related... and we undergo stepped up security measures (like in the airports) everyday. Since I grew up living on Air Force bases on top of missile silos during the cold war with Russia (read TARGETS), I can tell you that this dread feeling can suck the life out of you if you let it. My best thoughts on the subject are to do whatever you can to help yourself feel safe, and then get back to your own life! Don't let anybody take you joy in your daily life away from you!

Thanks for that Katie - I needed to read your post. I had a quick look at the news on Yahoo UK, and it seems every airport here in the Uk has been put on red alert. They think anti-aircraft guns have been smuggled into the country, as there are plans to shoot down an aircraft. And I know I shouldn't read the news :( - what do they say about hysteria ?

Hate to tell you but plastic and duct tape aren't gonna prevent anything from getting into your house. Unless you have an airtight house, with a sealed combustion furnace, fresh air always circulates in a house. And even if you were to successfully seal a room off( and you better make it a bathroom) you would run out of oxygen pretty fast depending on how many people are sharing the room with you. So unless you like the idea of suffocation over a chemical or biological agent you really can't do much should this type of attack happen. And living in the DC area like we do also depending on the air current isn't a great thing either. The only good thing is with the wind and snowy weather we are having right now the weather conditions are not conducive to an attack of this nature.

Sorry to sound bleak, but the news people are not mentioning that air runs out before the 72 hours are up in the event you could successfully seal a room off from the outside world.

Our only hope and trust should lay with God who in the ultimate protector!!!

Hi Rhonda! I live in NY & we're on Terror Alert all next week. Police are everywhere!! Yes its scary but I work right across the street from Ground Zero and to tell you the truth it becomes an everyday thing and I'm so used to it I don't even give it a second thought. I have plane tickets to fly & bust out of here on Sat. night for Ft. Lauderdale. Wish me luck! Kathy:D

I was watching the news last night where they were showing people buying duct tape, etc. Where did this whole thing of buying duct tape come from? I live in CA and to be honest I am more worried about earthquakes. I guess if I lived in NYC or DC, I would be concerned. I just hope that with the heighted awareness, people are being more conscious about who and what is arround them. But sometimes I think if I walked into the local store naked, no would notice or pay attention to it.

It's just like here in the South, everyone buys bread, milk and flashlight batteries the instant there is a snowflake forecast. It's something their mamas must tell them to do. I think it just makes them feel like they're "doing something", just like buying duct tape and Cipro.
If nothing happens, just stay healthy, treat people right and do your best. If something happens, same thing. There's not much you can do about it. That's my philosophy. I know you all couldn't wait to hear it

Saddam Enrages Bush With Full Compliance

WASHINGTON, DC—President Bush expressed frustration and anger Monday over a U.N. report stating that Iraqi president Saddam Hussein is now fully complying with weapons inspections. "Enough is enough," a determined Bush told reporters. "We are not fooled by Saddam's devious attempts to sway world opinion by doing everything the U.N. asked him to do. We will not be intimidated into backing down and, if we have any say in the matter, neither will Saddam." Bush added that any further Iraqi attempt to meet the demands of the U.N. or U.S. will be regarded as "an act of war."

In my opinion, Bush is using a kind of emotional terrorism to win support for his very unpopular war. By imposing code orange he is capitalizing on fear of the unknown; after all, he was slipping in the polls until he began this latest campaign to scare Americans into supporting a pre-emptive strike.

If the US has so much intelligence that Iraq is capable of and willing to stage an attack, then why isn't it being shared with the UN investigators? Isn't the US just as guilty of secrecy and deceipt by keeping whatever is "known" under wraps?

Why are almost every nation in the UN plus dozens and dozens of American city and town councils and county governments opposed to this strike? Because there is no evidence of either capacity or intent on the part of Iraq to initiate a conflict from which it cannot hope to emerge a victor.

The US is the largest consumer of Iraqi oil. That's what this is about. That's all Bush knows about. He neither knows nor cares one whit about the needs of the American people or the degradation of our schools, the non-existance of health care for the majority of our citizens, the exportation of jobs, or the hideous conditions our elderly and poor live in.

I urge you not to be afraid, but to be angry and to demand what every American citizen has a right to: self-determination and a voice with which to express it.

Sorry for the soap box, but we are some of the most empowered and strong-willed folks I know--we can survive Cathe workouts!--so it just hurts me to see any of us fall victim to scare tactics. I am afraid, to; but I will speak up for peace until the thugs from homeland security come and lock me up.
