Cleaning Boxing Gloves?

llp

Cathlete
Does anyone know how to clean the insides of the boxing gloves? I imagine they would get really sweaty and gross over time. I haven't purchased any (yet), and wanted to get this question answered before I buy some. Maybe someone can recommend some good pink ones :D?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

I would like to know this as well. Mine get really sweaty with just a short workout. That is the same problem I have had with the weighted gloves that I have. Used in a cardiovascular workout the get sweaty and nasty. I think Cathe's newest weighed gloves are more user friendly since you can take the weights out but, no one talks about washing them. My older pair of 1# weighted gloves(not Cathe's) have been washed many times (because I chose to) They have rust around the seams. My boxing gloves do not seem like a material I would even think about putting in the washing machine.

I don't think it's possible to wash the inside of the gloves (I could be wrong). And even if they were washable, how could you dry the inside quickly enough to keep it from getting that stinky towel smell?

The best approach, IMO, is to 1) wear wraps under the gloves (they absorb most of the sweat) and 2) put an odor- and moisture-absorbing cedar pack in the gloves immediately after use (they sell these for boxing gloves and for shoes).

Hi Kathryn:
That sounds like a good idea to use the wraps to absorb the sweat. I think most of the sweat would be on my palms, but, not really sure because I haven't boxed before. You can wash the wraps, right? I didn't know about the odor/moisture-absorbing packs for gloves. I might look for other items like that because I don't like the smell of cedar--but that is a good idea I might end up trying.

It sure would be good if they made removeable liners of some sort.

I really like the pink Everlast gloves, so, I'll see if the wraps on my hands will fit with those.

The wraps are made of cotton (sometimes a blend) and are washable. They even sell drying forms that you can wrap them around to dry. They are a bit tricky to wash in the machine, but putting them in a lingerie bag works pretty well.

The cedar smell isn't really strong.

Here's some more info I found : http://www.bambamboo.com/blog/boxing-equipment/stinky-boxing-gloves.html
(Smelly boxing gloves seems to be quite a common concern, and searching for "cleaning boxing gloves" or "smelly boxing gloves" turns up a lot of sites).

ETA: Smelly, germ-breeding boxing gloves sound gross, but I think smelly hockey helmets sound even worse: http://arxodos.blogspot.com/2009/08/hockey-helmet-odor-removal.html

Some more tips (for hockey gloves, but applicable to boxing gloves as well). The baking soda in a sock trick sounds promising.

thx Kathryn for the links!
If I get these types of gloves, it sounds like wraps are the way to go, and easy to wash(I do have a lingerie bag).

It kind of also sounds like from reading some of the internet sites that it's common procedure to use the wraps. I wonder if it is because it provides more support and padding? It is not just the expense of the boxing glove itself, but, the hand-wrapping expense sounds like it should be added on. Wrapping seems fairly inexpensive expense for a roll of the tape(maybe around $6 or so).

Gel Bag Glove info:
I also saw they have gel bag gloves(instead of wraps) that will go inside the glove for more padding and support--and the price of those seem to be in the $25 price range. Here is link I found for some:

http://www.boxingdepot.com/bx-ac-17.html#reviewSection

Here are reviews on the yellow gel bag gloves in the link above. Supposedly you can use them as wraps(faster than wrapping) under the boxing glove, or use them instead of the gloves. One review said they didn't hold up well, when used without the glove encasing it. The pink gel glove is cute & here is the link: http://www.boxingdepot.com/bx-ac-55.html <-- This is the same as the yellow one reviewed, but, in pink, and not on sale.

Molded foam glove info:
Here is another option I found, that I am leaning toward, because the palm is open(won't get stinky/moldy/bacteria ridden like a regular enclose boxing glove) and the glove seems secure(???). It also is nicely padded like a regular boxing glove on top.

There is soooooooo much to know!!

Hope I can attach 2 links of the pink gloves and the foam gloves for you...

Another advantage for the open palm foam glove

I read on another thread that Diane Sue had her thumb free in one of her gloves and it was very useful for operating the remote control!!!
That was a very good point Diane Sue! :D

Yahh! I think if you have the full-glove and wraps on, it would be tough to click the remote control buttons, or even adjust the volume! Also,
what would I do if I got an itch on my nose or somewhere else?

LauraMax : opinion on these types of molded/open-palm gloves?

Laura:
What do you think of these gloves for various reasons mentioned in my previous posts?
I wonder if they would give enough stability or move around too much on my hand.

thanks again,
linda

I like those! (Now, if I could find them in a non-leather version, I'd be sold!)

Kathryn:
I found some non-leather ones at that same website:
http://www.boxingdepot.com/bx-gl-220.html
(combo grappling bag gloves)

and http://www.boxingdepot.com/ma-gl-103.html
(sparring combat gloves).

They look similar to the previous picture. Couldn't post it for some weird reason, though.

The link will provide the picture to look at. They have a few other open palm gloves, but, I didn't list them here if they were leather, or did not say "bag" gloves in the description. The non-leather gloves look like they are less expensive, too:).

You enabler, you ! :p;)

ETA: Hmm...the first ones are leather.

Well, then, the choice is simple! (Well, maybe, .... if you like the design :D)

I'll look into the leather ones myself(maybe!). I don't need any enabling, as I can find my own things to buy easily enough!
