Clean Diet

I need to know what a clean diet is. I'm new here and have been using Cathe's DVDs since February. Am still losing weight (I'm too much overweight). Have noticed in many blogs about clean diet helping so much with loosing the belly pouch, etc. Can someone tell me what a clean diet entails. I'm only guessing that it is eliminating the sodium and preservatives in foods and going all natural/organic? Eating the good greens, veggies, fruits, etc? Don't know but want to know. Many thanks for any help.

Do a search on these forums for "clean eating" or eating clean and you'll get tons of information. Tosca Rena has a book out that is also helpful (easy read). You can also catch her on Oxygen magazine (or check out their website and do a search). I've been eating more raw veggies during the day and have noticed belly pooch has gone down a bit.

Good luck.

I am sure that you found info in the searches but I figured I would go ahead and add a little extra. I am a figure competitor and believe me - I HAVE to know clean eating. The food doesnt necessarily have to be organic but clean eating is based on eating things that are not processed.

*Basically you NEED to eat 5-6 times a day (every 2-3 hours). There is no way around it as it keeps your metabolism working.
*Each meal should contain a complex carbohydrate (limit these in the late afternoon or night unless you workout then), a protein, and occasionally some healthy fats (not every meal).

-GOOD CARBS: oatmeal (plain or Weight Control by Quaker), whole wheat tortillas/pitas/bread(limit bread), sweet potato, brown rice, Kashi Golean cereal, VEGGIES VEGGIES VEGGIES, fruits (limit to earlier in day b/c high natural sugar content)
-GOOD PROTEIN SOURCES: egg whites, whey protein powder, boneless skinless chicken breast, 99%fatfree ground turkey, top round beef (95% fat free), fish (salmon, tilapia, orange roughy, shrimp), fat free dairy products (limit as much as possible as these cause bloating in most people)
-GOOD FATS: natural peanut butter, unsalted nuts, olive oil, fatty fish (salmon/tuna), flaxseed (not my fave)

*Drink LOTS of water, green tea, and BLACK coffee. Doing these things will also help boost your metabolism.
*Eating clean healthy foods like this will boost your metabolism...so keep calories between 1400-1800. Never drop too low.

This may seem bland but you can always add a little kick with things like salsa, sugar free/low calorie jellies and syrups, herbs/seasonings, stevia sweetener (more natural), etc.

As mentioned Tosca Reno's Eat Clean Diet Book would be an excellent starting point and there is even a Eat Clean Diet Cookbook she is coming out with which would be even more helpful. Also, here is a link to a message board at Oxygen Magazine's website that lists out a bunch of clean food items. Hope it works.

I can't thank you enough for all of that information. Just what I needed. I am definitely on the right track for clean eating and can easily eat all of the above you mentioned. I fell in love with Kashi a few months ago. I changed my entire lifestyle in January, both physically and eating habits and feel great. I've already got my name in for Tosca's book that's coming out in September. I saw some of her recipes on her site and am waiting anxiously for the book. Thanks again for everything.

Tina - Wow! Thank you so much for posting this! Could you please post a copy of your typical food for a day? I've just ordered Tosca's books, and I'm trying to put my meals together. I still not sure how much fat to eat and when. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

siscobj2 - CONGRATS on changing your lifestyle for the better and gaining a healthy, fit self! I am glad to hear that you seem to understand the concept well and are willing to do what it takes. There are a lot of people who just won't and it is really sad. Mainly because they never get to experience all the advantages of more energy, better spirit, and all that comes with it.

vron - I can outline a typical day of meals for you and some of my fave variations on things. However, I do switch out different things on different days for more variety. Right now I am also in contest prep so feel free to add in more healthy carbs as I do not have a lot on my menu right now except carb-load days.

Meal 1: the usual is 1/2 cup oatmeal, 4 egg whites OR 1-1&1/2 cups Kashi GoLean w/ 1 cup skim milk or light soymilk (for more carbs add small piece of fruit or fatfree yogurt around 80-100 calories)

Meal 2: 1 scoop Whey protein shake OR 4 egg whites. Have w/ 10-15 unsalted almonds OR 1 Tbsp natural peanut butter. (sometimes I spread the pb on the eggwhites unscrambled and roll it up:) )

Meal 3: same as Meal 2 except no nuts or PB - instead maybe small fruit or fatfree string cheese)

Meal 4: 4oz chicken or fish (baked or grilled w/ seasoning) either wrapped in a whole wheat pita/tortilla OR w/ 4oz sweet potato or 2/3 cup brown rice or I like to have 6 pieces of sashimi (just fish) sushi and always some sort of cut up raw veggie

Meal 5: either like Meal 2 or Meal 3

Meal 6: 4 oz lean meat (chicken, fish, lean beef, ground turkey) w/ 1-2 cups of fibrous veggies (lettuce/spinach/broccoli/asparagus/etc)

SOME HELPFUL TIPS:
**make ground turkey "chili" - cook ground turkey and mix 1/4 lb with salsa, fat free cheese shreds and fat free sour cream
**make turkey burgers - season ground turkey w/ pepper, garlic & onion powder, and low sodium worstechire sauce (cook like burger)
**egg white bites: usa a regular muffin pan and put 1 egg white w/ your favorite veggies mixins or fat free cheese in each muffin cup and bake in oven for protein bites
**protein pancake - mix 1/3 cup oat bran w/ 1 scoop protein powder, 1 egg white, and spash of water or unsweetend applesauce to get pancake batter consisteny then cook in pan like a pancake:9

Let me know if you need anything else. And sorry for such a LONG post

"I've been eating more raw veggies during the day and have noticed belly pooch has gone down a bit." --->

Do you think this is bc the veggies are RAW or bc you are now eating more veggies instead of something else?

Is there any reason in clean eating why your veggies should be raw instead of say steamed or sauteed with a little olive oil?

Thanks!
