chest work

Hey everyone! I was just thinking about chest workouts, and remember a recent thread in which people were concerned that they were working their arms and shoulders more than their chest. I must admit I am feeling my chest muscles less and less ( I might need to go up in weight) the more I work out. Now, its been a long time since I've done TWV, but I remember such soreness in my chest after the weight workout in that video. I mean, my arms and chest would be QUAKING!!! And I wasn't even using very heavy weights, either. Does anyone else remember that? Aimee? you have that video, don't you? I might pull that one out and try it--I remember it was those chest flies where Cathe pulses low that really were great!

This is Aimee!! Yes, I have that video and you're right, those flies are killer!! Are you doing the CTX Series? What weight are you using? Remember, when you do chest think to yourself chest, chest, chest!! Keep your shoulder blades on the bench as you press up. What kills me with CTX are the combo of flies into press! Flies always kill though. I think you isolate the muscle group more with flies than with presses because with press you're using your shoulder and elbow joints rather than just your shoulder like you do with flies. Am I making any sense:-hmmm? I've only had 1cup of coffee so far. Anyway, keep your mind on your muscle, and let me know what your doing with videos and weights!! I love to give my $.02:)! TTYS!!

Hi Amy--
I'm halfway through a 12 week rotation with PS and MIS, so I'm still just doing the cardio of CTX. As for weights, I'm using 25- 35 lb barbell and 15 and 10 lb dumbells for chest. These are much heavier than the weights I used in TWV, and they challenge me, but I don't really feel my chest muscles the next day. Nor do I feel like I'm struggling at the end of each set. However, I'm not especially concerned with my chest (I'm flat chested and don't mind!), and these tapes are working for my other muscles just fine :). Plus, I don't want to go up in weight for fear of injuring joints or just going too fast.

Wow!! You can lift some weight! Refresh my memory, MIS doesn't have any flies in it right? PS I only have taped off of the t.v. and a lot is cut out, so I don't know if that has flies or not. I'm flat chested too, but I want that line that goes up almost to the collar bone, just for the definition. If all these two videos have are presses and pushups, up the weight a litte(maybe 30-40lbs), however, if you're doing flies I wouldn't go past 15lbs. I feel there's a greater risk of injry to the shoulder with flies. One last thing you might want to try, one time do the exercises on a flat bench, then next time on an incline and see if you feel a difference, then the next time at a decline(put your head at the low end of the bench) and see if you feel a difference. Not only will you hit the muscle differently each time, that maybe what you need to get the satisfaction of that nice sore feeling:)! I can go a lot heavier with these tapes,but not TWV also, I don't know what she does in that one to keep me at 5&8lbs;-). The good thing about training the chest is you'll also indirectly train your front delts and triceps, always a bonus for me! I hope this helps!! Write back and let me know, OK?

Hi, Amy--
Yep, MIS and PS CST both have flies, and I do go lighter with those--tends to stress my shoulders with heavier weights, even though I'm careful not to go below parallell to the floor on the downward part of the movement. An incline definitely works best for me, and in PS CST Cathe does have you put the bench in that position for part of chest work. I've noticed that if I turn my forearms at the top of the movement (of flies) so that my pinkies are facing each other, I usually feel it a lot more the next day, and if I imagine my chest muscles squeezing together it helps a lot, also. :) However, I'm trying to follow these tapes pretty much to the letter, so I haven't been doing the pinkie thing with them--I want to be able to judge my results from the tapes as-is.

MIS does have flies and how! Cathy does the first set using twenty pound dumbbells for the first set, drops to fifteen for the second! I am still waiting for my DVD's so I have been doing MIS alot. What is "TWV"?

Those flies make me sooo sore EVERYTIME I do them!! TWV is The Wedding Video. I just did MIS two days ago as I am also waiting on my DVD's. Can you believe all the positive comments on the new vids? Cathe never ceases to amaze us!:)

Debbie, I am delighted! I just ordered The Wedding Video ~ to tide me over until those DVD's come! I love MIS. I think it's my favorite. Cathe is absolutely amazing, no doubt about it. She is so strong and such a consummate professional. And, all the while, she's warm, funny and never condescending or intimidating. Fabulous! I can't wait for those DVD's!
