:::: CHEETAHS :::: Sun., 1/21

Carole--thanks for the Welcome back and the good cheer about my almost-didn't-do-it-but-did-it-anyway 7 mile run. I'm happy it ended on a good note. Glad your ITB is feeling great post massage and after your run today. I will be waiting to hear how you find a silver band for firewalkers I use a purple, blue or dark grey one---but no silver-gray for me... (I don't know if this is the same brand of dyna bands...)
.The firewalkers definitely help keep the ITB stretched for me. When I was at PT for ITB issues, they also showed me a "monster walking" version of firewalkers where you make more of an exaggerated circle with your foot as you firewalk -- So you are walking forward making a lateral figure eight rather than going side to side.
Have fun watching football! WTG on 12 miles!!!!

Hi eveyone. I'm back from Anartica. When the race began it was 21 degrees. So cooooolllllddddddd!!!!!!!.

I finished 137th out of 324 people. I came in at a little over 25 min. I forgot what the real time is until they post it. The first mile marker I was at 8:19 and then the secone mile I was at 17:30. Well, the third mile fell apart. It began to snow and ice and I began to cough my fool head off. It had to be at least 18 degrees at that point. Anyway I'm pretty happy. I was hoping to better my pr time of 24:38 but for the conditions it wasn't too shabby. The best part is that my IT band doesn't hurt one bit.

We had a blast. Before the race they fed us with bagels and fruit if you wanted it and when you came back they had pizza, soft pretzles and chip. Plus if you turned in your race bib you got a free soda or beer. My girls and dh had so much fun. They had a ball with all the food and football prep. I got at least 24 lara bars from the vendor who kept giving them to my kids. They also gave out little bobble head football men for placing which I didn't. I had a blast for my first race since May. Thanks for all your support. I can't wait for my next one.

Hey cheetahs,
Back for a quick hello. I have had to come back to the computer numerous times while grading my students’ book reviews as I have caught FOUR plagiarists so far. Before I get seriously disgruntled, I’m going to call it quits. (I actually had two assignments to grade for each of my four classes, so my pile was really 200-deep!! I still have 50 book reviews left, but I will spread those out over the course of the week.) Anyway, the plagiarism is disheartening and will definitely become a teachable moment tomorrow. I love how 13-year-olds think they can outsmart the adults in their lives...guess again, kiddies!

Barb ~ we are definitely glad to see you back. The 7-miler in the bitter cold didn’t sound fun. I agree – indoor cardio it’ll have to be. Thanks for the kind words! I usually strive for quick turnover with papers, but I have found it harder now that I am back to school myself. I’m sure I would love to have your son in class!

Laura ~ you’re welcome! Good for you for getting in a run in 26-degree weather!! I am getting the shivers just reading about the outdoor runs of our fiercest cheetahs! I have had the toes on my left feet go numb while out on runs. It doesn’t happen all the time, but it is an issue that just cropped up recently. I’m not sure why as I try to be careful about not tying the laces too tight.

Shelly ~ you are one amazing cheetah! Back with a vengeance! :) Nice that you’ve taken two rookies under your wing. They couldn’t have found a better mentor. I wish them luck keepin’ up with you, though! You’ve got me pumped for the new gloves to arrive. The DM “ultracardio blast” sounds scary!

Susan ~ so glad DM didn’t wreck your back today! I agree with Barb – you’re right to do some experimenting to figure out what your body is ready for. And that's just what you’ve done, backing off when it’s a bit much. Being reasonably cautious has been the smart way to go…it does sound to me like you will have this thing licked soon. Did you do the B&G blast?

Wendy ~ *does a happy dance for you* WTG on taking that first step! Don’t be nervous – this is what you love and it comes naturally. You’re gonna be magnifico! :) I’ve heard that, too, about the grocery store…I’m thinkin’ Home Depot might be a good place to wander around and look lost. :) Funny, you consider yourself “old” – I think I’ll probably stay immature indefinitely! (Which is probably why I teach middle school!) I remember that ice storm you’re talking about – it *was* weird!

Carole ~ glad there was little tightness in the ITB…Enjoy the games!

I am on the bubble about which workout I'm gonna do. I have to fast for bloodwork being done tomorrow morning, so I have to get to it soon. I'm thinkin' BC.

A question re: the HRM...according to FitDay and caloriesperhour, y'day's KPC session burned about 700 calories. But my HRM said 305. A huge difference! Which is likely to be more accurate?

Karen--congratulations!Job well done in the freezing cold no less. That's so awesome you did so well and have no ITB pain -- that's a real victory and you had fun to boot with your family there to support you.

I am really impressed that you ran this race so fast and in the cold.
-Barb:)

All right, Karen! WOO-HOO! :) GREAT run in terrible conditions! I doubt it'll be long before you nab that PR. Nice post-race amenities, too.

Cathy--I have tended to believe my HRM --disappointing as it can be at times. I found that over time as I became more fit and my HR lowered doing hard workouts, the calorie burn overall was less for me. I read something awhile back about calorie burn that is relevant for weight loss is your net calories burned vs. overall calorie burn for an activity : so what is relevant for weight loss is the total calories above your baseline energy expenditure you used for a workout. Some of the calorie calculators give you the total burn, but some of the HRM will tell you a better guestimate of what you actually burned given your pre-existing fitness level. Maybe others can help explain this better than I can.

Shocking about those plagiarizers (sp? -glad I'm not in your class). Bring them down gently -- they probably thought they had you. I am really serious that around here, a town where the schools are supposed to be good -- and they are good -- teachers truly do not return the majority of middle schoolers work to them and if it is returned, there is not much feedback the kids are getting.

Karen-- ditto on your comments to be back healthy and feeling calm is good. your girls must be really proud of mom today!!

-Barb

Hi all!

I haven't forgotten about you - just watching the game! Love wireless. I did Cardio Fusion with 30 minutes of yoga this morning. Then showered and now I'm watching the Saints take a beating... x( Oh well...

I don't have a lot of time, but I wanted to say a few things -

Karen - GREAT JOB on your COOOLLLDDD 5k! You're like the mailman is supposed to be - neither cold, nor snow, nor freezing rain.... I'm impressed!

Sunny - Congrats on quitting your full time job! How cool!! *does happy dance with Sunny*

Cathy - What? 13 yo's aren't smarter than we are? They don't learn that they are not smarter until they hit 25 and start to realize that we were right. *sighs* My 17 you still thinks she can pull things over on us. Good luck tomorrow. I'm glad they have a teacher like you to keep them in line and to show them the consequences of their actions!

Barb - Wonderful to see you posting again! I missed you!

Carole - good job on the 12 miler! WOW!

Susan - great job with Drill Max! I'm so happy you were able to do it!

Wendy - WAY TO GO for signing up to be a PT! You'll be fabulous!

Shelly - how exciting!! I love that your co-workers did a half and are pestering you for more information! You're a fabulous roll model!!!

Sorry to anyone I missed!!! HUGS! Go Pats!!

The results are up. There were 326 people and I finished 134th. I was ninth in my age group and ran 25:29. I'm totally stoked.

My dh came over to me this evening and said Happy Valentines Day. I said what. He said do you remember the Ocean Drive Marathon in Cape May NJ. Well, I booked you and the girls and I a weekend at the hotel and entered you in the Ocean Drive 10 miler that runs along the marathon. He said that you always wanted to do this and that he wants me to do this. We get a two night stay with breakfast each morning and a carb loading dinner on Sat. The marathon (well 10 miles for me) is Sunday. They will pick me up in Wildwood which is where we will stay on the boardwalk and drop me off in Cape May. I will then run to the 10 mile marker which is the end of the boardwalk in front of the hotel. How great is he. The kids are so excited becasue the hotel has an indoor waterpark and slide. I can't believe it. I'm so happy. I am so glad he is so supportive and my kids are my cheerleaders. On Friday and Sat is the expo at the Wildwood convention center where I pick up my packet and they have all kind of neat stuff. The students from Atalntic City Healing Institue will be there to give massages. I am so elated. Can you tell. I am so lucky. Thanks for listening.

Carol- Good job on your 12 miles. I will be looking to you for advice.

Wendy- Do it girl. We all know you can. You have to enjoy your work and you will doing this. I know you can do it.

Christine- I so need a shirt that says that. You make me smile

Barb...thanks for the ITB tips! I will let you know if the silver band kills me or not.

Karen...http://bestsmileys.com/textinbubble2/19.gif[/img] You did great in the frigid conditions!!!! I am so happy for you and glad you and your kids had fun. Hey, your DH is awesome!!! That is so cool he did that!! I'd be happy to give you any advice I can...:)

Cathy....sorry about the plagiarists, that sucks...:(...for your calorie question, I'd say take the average...:)...enjoy BC if that is the one you choose.

Christine....I had wanted the Bears....but I thought the Saints were a better team....wow, was I wrong. Good workout for you...:)

A break between games....:)...I know the turnovers killed the Saints, I am hoping for none in the next game!! I iced my knee after my run and it is still feeling good...

Barb ~ I have to admit…I am confused about the calories burned. This is something I want to do more research on, so I can understand it better. I really need to be focused and working effectively to bust this plateau. I can’t believe the middle schoolers in your district do not get most of their work back…that sounds kind of strange. There is nothing worse for a student than a guessing game, in my opinion. Well, I won’t be going in and ripping off faces or anything like that, but we are going to have a mini-lesson on plagiarism (I’m betting that many don’t even really know how to define it), and then I'll give the guilty parties a chance to be honest. If they own up, I’ll give them the opportunity to re-write the review for partial credit. Of course, their parents have to be notified. I don’t want these kids going off to college thinking it’s OK to cut & paste from the internet, which is exactly what all four of these kids did.

Christine ~ I agree – one of the best things I ever did was to go wireless with my laptop. I love being able to take my work outdoors when it’s nice out. *lol* You’re absolutely right. At about age 25, it does suddenly dawn on you that just about everything the old farts in your life told you way back when turned out to be true. My father still drives me crazy with how spot-on he is about things like relationships, weddings, etc. If a marriage is heading for splitsville, I think he knows it before the couple actually does. The man has these bizarre killer instincts. *lol*

Karen ~ congrats on doing so well in your age group! Rock on, cheetah! Well, we have another cheetah’s DH who has done well lately. Lucky you! :) That sounds like a perfect weekend for all. Have you been to the Jersey shore before?

Carole ~ that's a good idea splitting the difference...Now I have to fiddle with FitDay and see if and how I can override their estimates.

I wound up doing BM2 (minus the abs) to the best of my ability. Some of the moves were way over my head and I had to take breaks, but as I mentioned recently, I'm making progress w/ learning the choreography, so I'm not gonna write that one off just yet. It is a killer. I found that my HR was at the high end for almost the entire time.

OK, I'm off to re-evaluate my rotation and read up some more on the HRM business before I get organized for school tomorrow. Good night, everyone! Talk with you in the AM.

Cathy :)

Cathy- I have gone to Wildwood all my life. So I'm 34 now and I have been going with my faimily ( parents, grandparents and sister) Now with time I have been going with my kids and dh and some years my parents since I was like 3 or 4 to Wildwood. I have only missed two years my whole life which is when I had infants. We actually just got back in Jan for New Years. We went down for 4 days. In July we are going for a week. I should have been a Jersey girl. Now for Cape May my uncle always went there but this is my first time visiting that area. I can't wait to run though it.

Good luck with your workout and school tomorrow.

Carol- I'm going to take you up on that offer. First question is ,Do I need to change up my nutrition to run 10 miles. I don't seem to do anything much differnt on Sundays when I run 6 or 7. In the summer when I was approaching the 10 mile mark I remember getting headaches. Any thing I can do to avoid that again.

Hello ladies,
I am back for a brief moment. I have so much school work today to do with the kids. It is outrageous how much they give these kids at such a young age, UGH!

I did the blast premix of butts and gutts and stretched. I feel pretty good. Tomorrow is my rest day:) My elliptical should be coming by the end of next week. I am so excited!!!!

Cathy, when you did KPC were you in your heartrate zone the whole time. I find with the Cathe videos I go up and down and sometime we think since we are dripping in sweat at the end that we were in the high point of our zone, but a lot of times that is not the case. I know with KPC for me I burn about 400-450 calories and I am 5"7 and weigh 136lbs. I think 700 is defintley high. When I do the elliptical for 45 minutes and when I am in my high zone most of the workout I burn about 560 calories. I don't think I have ever burned 700 calories, except maybe after a really long run. I think sometimes the heartrate monitors are a reality check for some of us, that we are not burning a gazillion calories and that the food really has to be the biggest part for weight loss. Anyway, just my 2 cents:) And you are right I was definitley a bad girl yesterday, but it felt great!!!

Wendy, I think that is great about you getting certified. I became pt and aerobic instructor certified through ACE and AFAA. It was the best thing I ever did and I loved being a personal trainer. You will be so good and you have all this info that Cathe has provided you with and all the great ladies on the forum. You go girl!

Barb, I am glad you are back with us and survived the storm. We are pretty luck here in California. The only thing we really have to worry about is the dreaded quake}(

I agree that listening to my body is very important right now and boy when my body said Drill Max yesterday, I was thrilled. I know not to be stupid and push it. That is what got me into this mess in the first place. BTW, 7 miles is GREAT!!!

Christine, I pm'd you about lunch:)

Carole, that is great that you had very little pain today. Enjoy your game:)

Sunnydelite, congrats on quitting your job!!

Karenvictoria, GREAT JOB on your race!!!!

Laurie, have fun shoe shopping. My 4 year old has probably about 12 pairs of shoes and is obsessed with them. Hang in there with the dating, I am sure it must be frustrating.

Marcia, enjoy PUB. That is my all time favorite upper body workout, and yes I even love the biceps at the end}(

Laura, great job on your run outside in the cold. I also get numb toes from time to time. I just move my toes around a lot.

Shelly, I hope you enjoyed your workout. That is great that you are encouraging people to get out there and run. When is your next race?

Well, I hope I got everyone. If not, hello to you too. Have a great night ladies and I am off to homework and to make dinner.

Cheers!

Susan

Aaaahhhh, DH is not home and my little guy is finally down for his long winter's nap. ;) Time for me now!:)

Susan, I didn't know you were a PT and a group fitness instructor! Do you plan to continue with that when your girls are older? I toyed with the group fitness instructor cert instead of PT but the PT cert just seemed more practical if I wanted to make a F/T career out of it one day. How many classes can you teach before your brain explodes and you pass out from exhaustion!? LOL :p I can always cert for the group fitness at a later date if I think I might want to do that in addition to PT.

Karen, WTG on running an awesome race in the cold! Nice V Day gift your hubby gave you! What a sweetie! Enjoy!:)

Cathy, So you are giving Cathe's choreo a chance I see! That's great. Her work outs are fantastic! You'll be happy you are trying them. Even if running is your mainstay, it's always nice to have a back up plan or just something for a change of pace once in a while. When I first got hooked on Cathe I was stepping constantly. I eventually got tired of it. That's when I joined the gym and started running. I like having all of the variety. :)

Carole, I'm glad your ITB held up for your run. I don't want to see anymore injured Cheetahs around here for a LOOONG time!:)

Christine, It's okay to desert us for football. We understand. We just don't mean that much to you. We can run faster then those guys but hey...if that's what you prefer. *sniff sob weep whimper* LOL-only kidding!:7 Hope you enjoyed your afternoon of football. DH still isn't home. I think the last game ends at 10pm here.

Barb, Part of the reason why I think PT would be great for me is exactly what you mentioned...a bit of freedom to make my own schedule PLUS the big plus is FREE OR VERY CHEAP DAYCARE!!! The instructors/trainers at my gym use the daycare while they train and it's free! You can't beat that with a stick! LOL

So I was pretty much useless today. It was a lazy Sunday in the fullest sense of the word. I played on line and hung with DS while he watched Thomas and the Wiggles. After dinner I put on Homeward Bound...one of my fave cutesie movies :)...and Joey watched ALL OF IT! I cried about 50 times during the movie...I'm such a friggin sap. I kept telling Joey that the golden retriever in the movie is our dog Clyde. I think he may have understood what I was saying and so ofcourse he believed me! ;) :7 I finally got up off my duff after that movie and washed dishes and threw a load of laundry in. It's back to the grind tomorrow....I have to take Joey for bloodwork in the morning. I AM NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT AT ALL!!!!x( ;( x(

Okay, well I hope everyone has a pleasant evening!

Good night!

:)
