Chain restaurants you like (or don't)...

I forgot about Red Lobster! I would say I loathe Red Lobster. I don't know how they get away calling what they serve as seafood! My family is from the east coast and my Grandpa was a lobster fisherman, so we know how a lobster should taste like and what an actual scallop looks like. Everytime we go there I leave with the same action of hitting my palm to my forehead, dumb, dumb, dumb, I am always dispointed and never satisfied. I learned my lesson last time when the fish I ordered was forgotten and when it did come out it tasted like it was reheated in the microwave, yuck!

I feel the same way about Red Lobster. It's a crime what they do to seafood. I always figure RL is for people who really don't like seafood and are certainly not familiar with how it should taste. Just drown whatever it is in some kind of butter or cheese sauce, and then everybody will like it. Ugghhh!

My DH and I have only been to Outback for their Sashimi (SP?) Tuna appetizer and that's it. We avoid big box restaurants because it is never good. We are lucky enough to live near Traverse City, MI, which is a trendy city with lots of great places to eat.

My DH and I worked at Red Lobster. That is where we met. I worked there from 1995-2001. We saw how it degraded over time. When I started we wore pressed white oxfords, ties and pressed black pants. It went down hill from there. They were trying to compete with Bennigans, Applebees etc. and create a fun atmosphere. They downgraded the food. It is fatty and everything is laden with butter. The company that owns RL also owns Olive Garden. I have no desire to ever go to a restaurant owned by that company. When I worked there we at least got 50% off of our meals and I was a poor college kid. I took advantage of that. You can order everything dry (no butter) and when I had a baked potato I always rubbed all the salt off that they put on them and put salsa on it instead of the other stuff. They made those ahead of time.

As for the employees at a big box place......I have not had a bad one, but like I said, we don't really go to those places. They train the employees well, at least when I was there. I was a server trainer at RL and you had to be trained for at least a week, maybe two....can't remember. You had to taste the food, describe it, learn how the drinks are made, work in the back of the house etc. The new people were not allowed to go on the floor unless they were approved by me. By the way, I am a picky you know what......just ask my DH. :) My point is that they are hard workers, some better than others. They run their butts off to give good service. I know, I did it. It is a hard job and you deal with a lot of you know whats. It is hard to be nice to everyone like you are supposed to be.

Anyway....just my thoughts. I hope I am not off topic.

I love Fresh, a vegetarian chain restaurant in Toronto that has its own cookbooks and is truly awesome. Carnivores I've taken there love it.

I also like Freshii.

The only chain restaurants in my area are Outback, Denny's, and Chili's. Blech!

Thank heavens we have a Whole Foods because I love the Whole Foods Cafe. We will get take out and have an at-home date night. We also have a fabulous, fresh, healthy smoothie place called Blenders in the Grass. Best smoothies ever. I highly recommend it to anyone who visits California's Central Coast (it was started in Santa Barbara but only extends south to the LA area, I think).

My faves are Qdoba, which is better than Chipotle Grille, and Panera Bread also Maggiano's Little Italy, nearest one is in Troy (metro Detroit) or Bravo's Italian Kitchen (Eastwood Town Centre-East Lansing). Maggiano's was more traditional but Bravo's had more fusion like using alfredo sauce on lasagna, it is the bomb.

Before all of their restaurants were closed in my area, I use to like Stuart Anderson's Cattle Company. The entrees were okay, but I loved their Big Mountain Fudge Cake dessert.

I have a Qdoba by my job and just had one of their burritos the other night for dinner that I brought home from work. OMG, it was awesome!!!! Having never lived near one (or even heard of it), this was my first experience with them...

I have a Panera Bread here and like it but never think to go there! Thanks for the reminder! :)

I hate Chilli's and Applebees their quality of food has gone way down. Not sure if this makes sense to anyone but I've noticed that places don't cook fresh chicken instead it's that frozen, marinated stuff that tastes like rubber--yuck (you can tell that the texture of the meat is completely different.

I don't really go to Olive Garen anymore, I only end up getting one thing from there these days. We have a place called Orengano's that isn't bad.

Don't really like Red Lobster anymore either, found this other place in my city called Pappadeaux and it is yummy (fried crawfish is my fav from there).

I'm bigh now on finding places that I see on Diner, Drive-in and Dives :)

Well, i guess i'm the only one that has good memories of applebees. i have great memories of going there a few times when we were dating. however, i haven't been back in a long time. years. my most frequent destination is either my kitchen making my own food. or the grocery store. buying my own food to make it. i guess years in the future we won't have to eat every meal at home. going out to eat at a independent place sounds great.
there's a place by us called ravenellis. lots of people love them. family style place.

i have had the occasional arby's sandwhich. turkey ranch bacon club is really good. i don't even like bacon really.

probably if i was traveling picking a chain place to go. i would vote for subway. very calorie counting friendly. and can put lots of veggies on the sub.

and my mom has always loved red lobster and olive garden. probably, living in florida now, she has found other places she likes better.

EbonyNicole,

Every place on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives are great and one more reason for Cathe.
The first episode and the first diner was Rosie's in Rockford MI.
I get hungry just watching that show.

I like Texas Roadhouse they have good salmon. I also like Ruby Tuesday (salad bar). Love Panera but they are expensive. Went to Sonic's once and that was gross!!

Sweet Tomatoes (all you care to eat buffet) nothing like Ponderosa or Golden Corral.

Amazing salad bar items, jicama, zucchini, raw beets, squash, mushroom, peppers, etc. etc. etc.

Low fat soups and muffins

Fat free frozen yogurt

I go there when I "need" to over-eat but not feel guilty about it. ;)

I have a recipe for pasta e fagioli soup that my DH loves! It's easy to make. PM me if you want it!

(With longing sigh)...Olive Garden. Pasta fagioli soup...130 calories per serving. I'm going today!

We have such amazing restaurants up here (Johnson & Wales is local), so I have a difficult time spending any money at chain restaurants. The ones I like, we don't have: PF Chang and mongolian BBQ. As you can see, I lean towards the asian restaurants! Occasionally, I crave a really yummy burger and go to a lesser restaurant for one! That happens about every couple of years! Really. I don't eat much red meat.
