Cathe, you said your back gets sore...but my doesn't. Why?

I just read the thread about which workout you dread, and I read the link that said that when you work your back you are so sore the next day. I NEVER feel sore after a back workout. Oh, I might feel just a little "ache", but my back muscles definitely aren't sore. It's really depressing! (Isn't it strange that someone can call a lack of soreness "depressing"). I use soreness to motivate me. When I feel soreness, I know exactly what I worked, and it affirms to me that I actually DID something! Do you know what I mean? So, Cathe, can you (or anybody else out there) tell me why I don't feel soreness in my back? I've tried making sure I'm using proper form...I've tried heavier weights (but then my form suffers because my arms aren't strong enough to lift the heavier weight)...I've tried extra reps. Still, nothin'! As such, I am totally uninspired to do back work. I never feel it, and it doesn't seem to DO anything. I don't have this problem with any other body part, except for maybe just a little in my shoulders (but even my shoulders get a little sore and I see results). What am I doing wrong?

I 2nd that notice, I would love to hear some replies regarding this.

I never, ever feel sore after doing back workouts, if anything I feel it in the shoulders and arms....not my back. Is this normal?
I always wonder If I have proper form doing the dead lifts....I can always feel it in my hamstrings the day after though...:)

I have the same problem as you guys!! It is really annoying, isn't it? I asked this question at the personal training station at my old gym, and they all replied the same: your back is stronger and can lift more weight than the supporting muscles (shoulders and biceps especially forearms for me). You just really have to concentrate on good form and focus on your back muscleswhile lifting, also build strenght in the supporting muscles so they can tolerate the heavier weights. And it is very common, so you aren't alone! :D

Okay, I'm still new to this so take what I say with a grain of salt. However, I felt the same as you until I started working my back with pull ups and chin ups. For the first time my back felt sore the next day. It was great! (YKWIM) I could feel that twinge all along my lats and across my rear delts (I hope that's right), and I finally felt like I really worked my back.

BTW I'm talking about my upper back and the muscles that run along the side of the back. My lower back is weaker so I always feel those with supermans and lying leg extensions.

Deadlifts should work the hamstrings and glutes. They are not a back exercise, except for some isometric work in the lower back.

I agree with Pamela's post. I started doing wide armed pullups and I can really feel my back now! Karen
