Cathe vs. The Firm

Is it just me, or does it seem like every other topic has to do with the firm? I think Cathe is giving those ladies a "run" for their money and customers.
I used to workout with the firm for 3 years and loved it until I found Cathe, but that is just my personal opinion. However I was wondering will all the Cathe vs. The Firm topics and discussion, I think it almost needs its own forum. :)
Since workingout with Cathe, and seeing this open and "FREE" discussion form I think she is tops in the workout industry!!
Plus I think everyone here is pretty great too! We all seem to help one another out! WOW! Can't get this at a gym!!

You're right, there do seem to be a lot of discussions regarding Cathe vs The Firm.

Personally, I do both. I don't understand why one has to preclude the other. I get great (and different) results from both, and find that I look and feel my best when I combine the two! :D

I have been doing strictly Cathe for weight training for a long time and recently started using the Firm BSS3 after hearing good and bad things about them. I like them, they are just different. I need a change every now and then.

I also just got the Slim Series and have done P90X. It makes it a lot more fun to have options.

I think that may be because a lot of Firm Believers members were 'upset' with the service they received and then many decided to start branching out to other sites. This site was listed but some decided not to join because it was said to be "anti-FIRM". I must admit I have met a lot of self-proclaimed "Cathe snobs" (I thought that was hilarious), but have not actually 'spoke' to anyone that has completely just hated the Firm. I agree that both systems are excellent. Both systems get results and I think that it's just a matter of what type of crosstraining anyone wants to do. I don't think they should be in competition, even though that's what I originally bought the workouts to do, (see if I could keep up with Cathe). After trying both, I love them both and and will continue to use them both. I think people just like a little drama if you know what I mean. ;) ;)

I haven't touched any of my Firm videos in 6 months- since I found Cathe. That being said I'm sure I'll do those firms again some day when I want to change it up. But for now I love the Cathe's that I am doing and anxiously awaiting the Hard Core series. }( }(

I agree! I think they work well together. Most of the time, I get a better lower body workout from the Firm than from Cathe (and I've found very little that tops the Firm's floor work, at least in their older titles).

I haven't used a firm work out since I found Cathe a couple of weeks ago but I'm not going to disregard them either. I have many of their work outs. Some of them I pretty much quit using long before I found Cathe and will probably try to sell those on Ebay, but the ones I always used prior to Cathe I will keep because I completely intend to use them in my work out rotations in the future. If one day I somehow find myself advanced beyond what the firm offers, then I will probably get rid of the rest of my collection, but for now, they are still keepers in my book! :)

i also dont understand why it has to be firm VS cathe!!! if she gets mentioned too much on the FIRM forum, all heck breaks lose!!!! yet there can be several running threads that even the instructors participate in....running is just another form of exercise just like cathe style is a another form!!! i still go to the FIRM forum daily and i like it for various reasons, but it is a shame that so many are FIRM only in their thinking...they are really missing out on something truly special!

Please don't get me wrong, I am not a "Cathe snob" by all means, and don't think for a moment that was directed towards me, but I wanted to mention that I have stopped using the Firm after Cathe because I noticed a lot of mistakes their "master instructers" used. I hate seeing a workout system where you are misguided. Plus Cathe's customer services puts all to shame in my book. I was floored at Step N' Motions customer care. WOW!!
But the good thing is that you can pick up the right form from Cathe, or else where and know what not to do.
I do believe it is a great mix and they compliment each other quite well. I haven't done the Frim since I purchased Cathe's tapes, only because of personal choices but that doesn't mean that I am missing out by not doing the Frim.
I just found something new that I really love doing, so I don't want to take a break from it.

I just keep seeing a lot of "I used to do the firm, please give advice on Cathe"... topics. And it seems like it needs its own section.

Well, I never liked the Firm much...I have a few of their workouts left that I will do once in awhile for a change, but once is usually all I can take. It's not that I think anything is wrong with them...just not my cup of tea.

Having said that, I agree that their floor work is not bad!

I started doing The Firm in 1989 because I was moving from NY to GA. I always went to the gym in NY and plus you do a lot of walking there. So I purchased The Firm, since I did not know if I would be able to go to the gym. The Firm worked pretty well for me. I have many Firm tapes. I stopped working out after I had my daughter in 1992, then started back at the end of the 90's. I had gotten 4 Cathe tapes at the end of the 90's. I felt they were too tough for me, so I put them away. Started back with The Firm. The Firm was working, but not very exciting, so I started using Cathe again. I enjoy Cathe's tapes, her motivation and the results. I keep saying I am going to rotate The Firm back in, but I just love Cathe so much. Maybe one day I will use The Firm again.

I had totally switched from the Firm to Cathe, but then got waylaid by pneumonia for a few months. The Firm was a great way to get back my fitness level so I could even think of doing Cathe! I confess that my Leslie Sansone 4mile WATP got used too. I think there's a time for almost any workout, although I feel the most accomplishment in completing a Cathe. Well, Cathe or Super Cardio Mix -- that one is still challenging for me.

Hi! I'm sort of new here. I have been a Firm believer for more than 3 years. I love the Firm workouts and have a collection of over 30 tapes and DVDs ranging from the old to the new. A few months ago I was reading a post on the Firm website regarding Cathe and how the intensity for cardio workouts was much more challenging, this sparked my curiousity and I had to check it out. I have never really found the Firm Cardio workouts very challenging and I have always looked to other sources for my cardio. So I checked out Cathe and I immediately purchased the Body Blast Series. I love Cathe's workouts, I love her personality and pep, now I'm not saying that I don't equally appreciate the Firm instructors but I do find Cathe more motivating and challenging. I asked for more for Christmas and I received 5 different workouts, Santa likes me, I've been a good girl! :+ I really don't see any reason you can't do them both, I've always heard that it's good to keep variety in your routine so your don't get bored/complacent also to keep you muscles confused. Well that's what I'm doing, my Cathe's keep the intensity in my routine and my Firm's give me a little bit of a break (only b/c they're shorter and have less impact moves). I just put together an eight week rotation using 20 of my Firm workouts and all 11 of my Cathe's, I used a few of my Cathes twice and I have a different Firm for each workout. Talk about variety, this is going to be fun! I just know I'm going to like my lower body after this routine, I can't wait to finish. If my results are as good as I think they're gonna be I'll post pictures. Sorry to be so long winded, I just can't stop blabbing about my workouts, "Hello, my name is Crystal Johnson and I am a Cathe/Firm - aholic".

P.S. Would anyone care to offer their opinion on weather, Leaner Legs is harder or easier than Standing Legs (my all time favorite Firm workout)? I just got Leaner Legs and I haven't had the chance to view/try it, all I know is that it was ranked to be the hardest Cathe leg workout. Any advice?;)

Hi Joanna,
I feel the same way. It's why so many members over there start branching out. The minute you mention anyone else's name or exercise program over there people start qouting the policy's and procedures. That's one thing I have definitely liked over here, not being policed so much as to what I can say. I mean, I had to get a girls personal email address just to give her a website that was non-firm. The service there really sucks and especially since we are paying for it. But it's amazing, even though they tried their best to keep people from posting about other fitness instructors, look how many of us still found our way over here. Usually when someone speaks about Cathe at the Firm website, they only have good things to say and thats what made me decide to try her out. And you are right the biggest problem I have (and most people) have with the Firm is their customer service. Cathe is light years ahead, I mean if you decide to order directly from the firm you're waiting at least 3 weeks. I have never had videos shipped to me so quickly as I did with my experience here. And the shipping and handling they charge you over there is unbelievable. I think they are making profit off of that too. With that said though, I do think the actual program is effective and I also think it helped me find my way to Cathe. I think had I just found Cathe, I would not have continued exercising because I would have felt that her workouts were just too hard. But because of going through the Firm first, I was able to learn a lot of terminology, a lot of similar moves, increase my stamina, build my strength, and gain a mental advantage that I would not have had otherwise. I think Cathe is more advanced and love that, especially on days where I'm revved and ready to start pumping. But their are days when I want something a little lighter but still effective as well and the Firm fills that void. I guess what I'm saying is that it can be easy to be fixated on one thing, but it's not bad to mix things up. I think once I get the Hardcore series, I'll probably not do a Firm workout until I master all of the new tapes, but that's just me. That doesn't mean I won't ever Firm again. I think it's just a matter of personal opinion and those who decide to Crosstrain the two, benefit in ways that others who do not, may not. It's the same with any other workout too. Someone doing that may benefit from it, whereas someone else not doing that workout will not. If that doesn't fit them though, it just doesn't fit. And I don't think there should be any ill-will, or ill feelings just because someone decides to do just one or someone decides to crosstrain the two. I think whatever fits you best is just fine.

Hi Melanie,
When I said "Cathe snob" my intentions were not to call anyone a name. I was only referring to the name some of the members on this board had termed themself in a reply I read. There was another topic on the Firm and Cathe, and a few ladies said that they were true "Cathe snobs" and didn't do any other type of workout, which I thought was a really funny name. However, I would personally never call anyone that. So please don't take offense because that name was directed to no one in particular.

Yup, Christi, I think I would call myself a Cathe-snob. Since I discovered her in October, I've done NOTHING else, not one time (except some gentle yoga once on a rest day). I can't even bring myself to get on our treadmill anymore. I suppose this will wear off some day, but until I've got all her workouts, I suspect it will stay.

The 15 or so Firms I have continue to gather more and more dust. The instructors look and act like barbie robots. I have always thought that, even when I did those workouts on a regular basis.

Hi Christi!!

I didn't for a moment think that was intended for me, but it did help me pull my head out of you know where, because for a moment I was thinking how much better Cathe was than the Firm as I forgot how useful the Firm was to me at one time.

I wasn't offended at all, but greatful for the reminder it brought to me unintentionally.

:D

I started doing weight training before the Firm, but Firm got me started in a big way. I still own 3 videos that are the only videos I have not sold since I replaced everything with DVD. I do have two Firm DVD's as well. They are verstile, as you can add more weight as you advance. People started noticing my biceps when I was using them. I added more strength work and cardio on my own and then discovered Cathe. I mainly use the floor legs workout because I like to do upper and lower body separately. I think they have there place and can complement a Cathe workout.
