Cathe or other instructors: When you teach a live class...

Does your mic ever "die" or quit working, so you have to yell out your cues to your class? I'm just curious because that happened to me tonight. It was no big deal -- I have a pretty loud voice -- I was a cheerleader in high school and college. Plus I used to teach before the clubs ever had microphones, so I did plenty of yelling.

I've never been to one of Cathe's classes, but I have seen pictures from the road trips and I've seen how big the aerobics studio is and how many people can fit in there, with the music and the stomping on steps... what happens if the mic doesn't work... Cathe must have back ups -- one would hope. But she's also an instructor just like me and so many others -- and sometimes things just go wrong... music skips, or some new move just doesn't work... I'd love to hear stories... from Cathe or anyone. Just to make me feel better! :)

Have a good night!

It sure has happened to me Charlene. I do have back ups and also extra batteries. Fortunately (knock on wood) I haven't had a problem in a while. But when it has happened, you are right, you just go with it. I found that I have to cue from my chest vs my throat to keep my voice deep and projective. It wears me out so much more shouting that loud but it kind of fires me at the same time...does that make sense? :D

Hi Charlene

As another instructor I have had many a thing go wrong

Lets see half way through class lost power it was the weights and then stretch left. The sun would be setting soon (we had 3 big windows)
I let the sun tell me when class was over, we stretched in the dark.

I've had the music system totally not work, it was a kick box class and I
taught the whole class cuing with out any music. It was a lot of extra cuing
but it worked out and every one was happy :D;):D

Cathe lost power in one of our RT classes, music came back on but in her
studio it takes a while for the lights to come back on. She talked us through it and just kept on going, no big deal we all thought it was pretty fun :D:D:D

Oh yes...

Oh yes. It's happened to me several times. The equipment at my club is less than stellar. Luckily, I'm in a smaller room, so my yelling is heard pretty well...but I'll tell you, I'm almost hoarse the next day. I've even gone so far as to consider buying my own headset...but haven't quite done it yet.

Whistle while you work

You have to rely on your hand ques and whistleing. When you whistle they know something new or a change is coming. You can put them in a hold pattern while you show them the next move. But as I said: A LOT of hand signals!!!!!

I was at a seminar: huge studio!!! Huge numbers!!! This poor man got sick the nigt before and had no voice... he did have a mic so the whistle was heard, but having a mic did not matter w/o his voice ;)
