Carbohydrate question

From bodybuilding.com:

"With the advent of so many nutritional approaches to achieve the ideal look, numerous inquiries regarding the practice of omitting fruit, fruit juices or any of its derivatives from a diet have surfaced. Fruit is a healthy food, full of nutrients, high in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and low in fat and calories. It is a common practice for bodybuilders during pre-contest preparation to omit fruit from their diets, as it should be for anyone looking to minimize body fat."

I hope this answered your question.

Ok but after reading this-- why would eating fruit make someone have a higher body fat percentage-- that just doesn't make any sense. Am I being dense?? LOL... I'm just confused. Is it a sugar imbalance eventhough its natural sugars? Or is it a bloating thing that can take away from the needed cut look? Also-- is this temporary in the weeks leading to a competition or something body builders adhere to year round? Thanks again for all the great info!

Kathryn, I have to admit your post confuses me. Are you saying you get 100% of the recommended vitamins & minerals from a vegan diet? If not, do you take supplements? If yes, why would it be OK to take, say, a calcium or iron supplement (which I would imagine would be critical to a vegan diet), but not a fiber supplement?

I have hypothyroidism and irritable bowel syndrome and require fiber suppliments because of these two conditions even though I eat a ton of fruits, veggies and whole grains each day. The need for fiber is individual and can't always be achieved through diet alone.

There's a great response from http://www.scitecnutrition.com/2003/features/features.asp?code=0009 regarding the comment of "fruit can make someone have a higher body fat percentage" Essentially it says that if you eat too much fruit that once your liver glycogen is full the excess is converted into fat. However, one needs to keep the liver glycogen fairly full to provide the body with energy.

I recommend you check out the above link. The article is really informative and provides the answers to your questions. It's a delicate balance to determine who much carbs in ingest to sustain your body's energy while not overflowing the glycogen levels causing the excess to be converted to fat.

Laura,

I'm new to the forum and I've read a couple of your posts regarding your success with Atkins. I need to lose 10-15lbs and am considering the Atkins WOL. Did you start with induction and follow it through each phase? Did you eat full-fat dressings and/or cheese? I know just like with anything, moderation is key... it just sounds too good to be true.

Your advice is greatly appreciated! Congrats on your continued success... you look amazing!!

Okay just want to confuse a bit more. To me, lean protein is ONLY non-animal protein so does not include Chicken, Beef, Pork, Ham or anything animal protein unfortunately including fish and that is what also affects the fat stores and cholestrol.

Now to eat cleanly, I minimize salad dressings. I eat predominantly vegetable (soy) protein except for 2 to 3 servings per week of omega 3 and 6 fish such as salmon, tuna, and baked stuffed sole. I eat flaxseed bread which I buy from Stop and Shop (great protein and fiber source). I do not eat too much of the grain or flour type of carbohydrates. I eat as much fruit and vegetables as I desire and that could amount to 4 servings or more of fruit daily - I do not count those carbs. I do use a protein shake for my breakfast so whey protein is part of my daily diet. Oh and I also grind up daily flaxseed (great tasting fiber) and put it in my protein shake along with berries (frozen). I have also switched from cheese and milk products to soy milk.

I have tried Protein Power which is similar to Atkins but safer from a saturated fat viewpoint. However, I have not only lost 10 pounds in about a month (have only been doing this about 1 1/2 months so far) but reduced my cholestrol following Eat to Live by Joel Fuhrman. I think this book is as close as I have ever gotten to clean eating.

Good luck!
Sheila
