Can you buy 6, 7, 13 or 14 lb. dumbbells?

BAM

Cathlete
I'm wondering if they sell these in any stores. I really could benefit by the in-between weights. Does anyone know if these are available? I'm sure I can be creative but it would be nice if they were sold this way. Thank you.

Bam

As Nancy confirmed, 6 and 7 are definitely available. I got mine at either Sprots Authority or Dick's. I also have 9's and 12's for those in between times. Not sure what I'll do when it's time to jump from 15's to 20's - I wonder if they make 17 or 18's :) ?

Wow! Thanks everyone for your quick responses. Ooh, I'm excited now that I don't have to strain to try and do some reps with a weight I know is a bit too heavy but really wanting to graduate from the lighter one. Thanks for giving me a "happy" errand to do tomorrow! :7

Also Bam,
If you buy the Nautilus Select Tech dumbells, they give you soo many weight choices from 5- 52.5 pounds. And they only come with 2 pairs of dumbells!!! But if you already have some weights, than you wouldn't need this. Plus they cost 349.99}(

Uh, yeah, thanks Adri, lol. I think I'll save my 349.99 for Cathe videos :D but I think those are kinda cool. I wonder if they're awkward at all to use. I'll stick with my .50 per pound ones for now. :p

LOL Bam. I know at first I wanted them when I saw a commercial. I literally loved them!! Then looked online and saw the price, well, lets just way we broke up;-)

Like they say, it's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all! O.K., I might be strethin' it a bit here, lol.

Bam...you can also buy adjustable dumbell sets at like Target that cost about $30 and you can make alot of different weights with them. And about the Select Tech Dumbells..I got them for $300 about 18 months ago and absolutely love them and use them about every day...:)

Another way to get the in-between weights is through platemates, which you can get at fwonline.com. They are 1.25 lb magnets that stick to the end of metal dumbbells. You put 1 each on both ends of each dumbbell. I just got a set of these to turn my 15's into 18's and I'm loving them. I didn't feel quite ready for 20's so this was perfect.

Carol- Did you get the Select Tech dumbells at Target for 300? They're 350 everywhere I looked. I should check em out there. But I alrady have dumbells from 3-30 pounds. I don't think I need more...YET}( }(

I bought platemates from fwonline too and love them. I tried going from 20# to 25# on bench press and found it pretty difficult. But after 2 weeks of 22.5#, 25# wasn't so hard. I did the same with flyes--15#-17.5#-20# and am now working on one-arm rows--25#-27.5#-30#.
They are pretty handy little gadgets. :)

Nancy,

Thanks for the link to Sissel with the dumbbells! I've been looking for increments between 15 and 20, and between 20 and 25, but most coated dumbbells don't have the in betweens. These look reasonably priced, but what about shipping? From my experience, ordering dumbbells online is usually prohibitive because the shipping price ends up being higher than the cost of the dumbbells.

Adri...I got them thru a company called Gatelys online. But like I said it was awhile back. They don't sell them for $300 anymore...:(

Platemates come in both 1 1/4 & 2 1/2 lbs. They're great.

I've seen some gyms w/in-between weights--Gold's has 17.5, 22.5 & 27.5 dumbells. But they're pretty rare.

Maybe Haydee can chime in--she owns a gym & knows a lot about where you can get various equipment that's hard to find. Or maybe you can PM her.

I have a pair of Heavy Hands that can be adjusted to 7#.

I also have some 1.25 pound and .625 pound(each) plateweights that are the very best way to get in-between weights (you can add just one platemate to a dumbell to go up in a small increment, and hold the weight a bit closer to the weighted end for balance).

The only problem is that they don't hold very well (safely) on rubber-coated weights, but only my 8# and 10# dumbells are that type.

And just remember, you have to buy four of them to fit two dumbells. It seems a bit pricey at first, but they are well worth it, IMO.

Thanks again everyone for your great suggestions!!! :) I've certainly got options to check into. I'm really liking the magnetized ones. I'm also thinking about how much the shipping charges for weights would be but I will check into that. You guys are awesome!!! :7
