Bye Diet Coke, I'm going to miss you

I was talking to my SIL today at our Palm Sunday brunch. I am apparently her fitness inspiration, although she inspires me just as much with all the effort and dedication she has put into in the last 6 months or so. She has given up the diet pop. I've often thought about it, and now I'm ready. Why am I drinking chemicals in a can? Anybody????? I made the switch from real pop to diet pop long long ago, and now I think I'm ready to let go *sniff*

I did buy a case of Diet Coke and a 2 liter of Diet Coke yesterday when I went grocery shopping. When this round is gone, its gone. No more canned liquid pseudo beverages. Give me strength and willpower!!!!! I did post it up on my Facebook, as well. And threatened dear SIL if I go into a caffiene shortage rage, I'm coming after her:eek::p Coffee, tea, and water it is. DH doesn't drink pop, and DS really doesn't either, unless we're out somewhere. So I won't have it the house for them, either, so that's not a temptation. Thank Goodness.

I think I can, I think I can, I KNOW I can!!!!!!!
When your mind is made up, your body complies, right????? Let's hope so.

((((((Nan)))))),

I SO feel your pain! I gave up Diet Cokes (all sodas, actually, but Diet Coke was my drink of choice) in August of last year. I thought I would never be able to do it...after 20 years of us being together. For me, it was more a deeply ingrained social habit than a matter of caffeine addiction. I reached for that beautiful silver and red can several times a day...and often stopped at drive-thrus just to get a vat o' Diet Coke...extra ice, please!

I still miss it...my DC lover...but I think of all the good things that have come as a result of my no longer worshipping the Coca-Cola god. It's been several months, and while I often drive by my old Diet Coke watering holes and hear the faint sound of Barbra belting out Memorieeeeees...I'm glad I did it.

From a fellow DC sister...I'm here for ya! Anytime! All the best with your goal.

You can do it!

I was a Diet Coke addict years ago and gave it up in 2001. I drink flavored seltzer water now and love it - it gives me the carbonation I crave without all of the chemicals. I actually ended up getting pregnant unexpectedly soon after I gave up the Diet Coke and was relieved that I wasn't drinking it before I knew I was pregnant (I was drinking a LOT daily).

Good luck!

I finally gave it up a couple months ago. It's HARD. Harder than you think it will be, even! I mean, I still drink caffeine and all (coffee, tea) so I kind of wonder what else is in there that is still making me crave it to this day??

I found that if I drank lots of water and avoided getting thirsty, it was easier to resist.

One afternoon, it was pretty warm, and I was thirsty, and I was in the hot, hot car on my long drive home from work, and I wanted a diet coke so much I thought I was going to lose it. Now I carry my metal water bottle with me wherever I go and keep it topped up, so I'm less tempted.

Good luck!

Such great advice and Afreet is so right it is soooo hard to do. I have my water bottle with a squeeze of lemon with me all the time. When I'm at a restaurant I'll let myself a diet coke, but when you give it up you'll be suprised how you don't have that bloat feeling.
You can do it!!!

Hello from another diet coke divorcee :)

I quit 2 years ago and am so glad I did. It was hard for the first few months mostly. I mostly craved it late morning at work. But, I held strong, and haven't had any since. I'm proud of myself for doing that - I gave up all artificial sweeteners. Well, stevia or agave is all I have - or real sugar in small doses.

Good for you - you can do it!! You'll be glad you did!

Good for you!!!!
I gave up Dr. Pepper in January (regular) and it was the hardest thing for me to give up but not as hard as I expected. It's great that you won't need to have soda in the house, that makes the week moments so much easier.

I ♥ me some Coke Zero. I'm in no way ready to give it up. It's either drink Coke Zero, or go back to smoking. I'm picking the CZ. :D

Nan, Here is some encouragement from someone who did NOT find it hard to give up diet coke / pop.

I found it so ridiculously easy that I was surprised.

I replaced it with sparkling water (plain soda sans any chemicals) with a wedge of lemon thrown in if it is easily available. Another substitute is coconut water. Or good old OJ. I LOVE my substitutes so much I dont miss pop at all. It took me a couple of tries to adapt to sugar/sweetener less soda. I find it so refreshing now, that I dislike sweetened beverages.

I am a teetotaller and limit coffee to two cups (usually just one) a day. Yet I did fine.

You never know until you try. It may be easy for you too.

Hi again:

I hope I didn't sound discouraging - I meant to provide a little solidarity, not to sound pessimistic. I found it difficult to surrender my Diet Coke (and more particularly, my Diet Dr. Pepper) because I was practically weaned on the stuff, and it seemed pretty harmless. But when I read some of the recent findings about diet sodas and their relationship to metabolic syndrome and sugar cravings and whatnot, I decided it was time to bid all diet soda adieu. I have Hashimoto's thyroidosis and my brother is diabetic, so I try to be really careful about inviting metabolic havoc into my life!

I have noticed that my sugar cravings have gotten A LOT easier to control, which is awesome, because I have a serious sweet tooth and it has always been difficult for me to say no to sugar. I do still put a little stevia in my coffee sometimes, but I'm phasing that out, too.

Let us know how it goes and if you notice any difference in how you feel after you've successfully eliminated the stuff from your diet!

Good Luck!

I gave up soft drinks 9 years ago. I have one every once in a while but I don't miss. I drink lots of tea (green and red) and lots and lots of water.

I've been slowly phasing out the diet sodas. I'm not totally there yet, as this is really my one vice. I have been making a point to take water to work to have with lunch. I find it's easier not to drink it at work; it's at home where I tend to drink too much of it.

I'm so with you on this, Nan! People think of me as a bit of a health nut and then they see me drinking Diet Coke. I feel like such a fool. I have cut back a lot over the years, though. I used to drink Caffeine Free Diet Coke all day long at work, and now I never drink it at work. I buy unsweetened iced green tea at Starbuck's now instead, and drink that all day long. I also try to order iced tea at restaurants, but I still order diet Coke half the time and I drink it at home too. Baby steps.

I truly, truly, believe that there is an addictive ingredient in Diet Coke. I had a really hard time giving it up. I thought it was just the carbonation but there was SOMETHING about a diet coke that I'd always come back to. All the dentists that I worked for would always say how bad the dark soda's are for your teeth. I've noticed that children who drink the stuff more have really bad teeth. :(

I'm another one who doesn't find it hard not to drink any soda. I used to drink it but never had a regular habit, and once I learned about how terrible it is for you, I gave it up. I can honestly say that it doesn't appeal to me at all. In fact, I find the entire soda experience yucky. When I see people with their carts loaded up with the stuff it seems like such a waste--of both money and health.

If I ever had a real craving I wouldn't have a problem buying a natural soda, and when I'm at a restaurant that has them I'll have one (this is probably a few times/year). There are several brands now that make "grown-up" type natural sodas--interesting natural flavors and not as sweet. I mostly drink water, tea, and coffee. My favorite fizzy and healthy drink is kombucha, but that's definitely an acquired taste.

Bad for your teeth? How so?

Softens the enamel on your teeth and encourages cavities. The Dr's I've worked for, . who by the way were also addicticed to soda always tell every patient to drink coffee and esp dark soda's through a straw.

Have you ever heard of that urban legend experiment where when a kid loses their tooth they put it in a dish of soda and the tooth dissolves? Well I tried that when my kids lost their teeth and it literally dissolved. Not completely but, . .I bet if we left it in the dish long enough it would have. I can't even imagine what that stuff does to my insides. :(

You can do it, Nan! :) I did it too this year. I only drink unsweetened tea during the day and naturally sweetened Sobe Water when I workout. I have found that going off the diet sodas has made me MUCH less moody for some reason. My sweet cravings have gone down too. It's tough, buy you definitely can do it!! Before long you won't even miss them. Instead you'll think, "WHY did I used to drink that brown syrupy stuff filled with chemicals??!" :)
