BRUISING AFTER LIFTING WEIGHTS

Hi, Cathe. I was just wondering:

Do you ever bruise after you lift weights? Specifically, your biceps? It seems like EVERYTIME I lift, I get bruises under the biceps in my arms. It is the strangest thing, and I can't figure out why. They aren't horrible bruises, but they are enough to make me wonder.

Thanks,

-Debbie

BTW, I am glad to see the new set of DVDs -- I will be buying them, for sure. ANYTHING to save precious time and leave it up to you and the gang to come up with the perfect combinations!

Thanks, again.

Hi Debbie, I'm not Cathe but I was wondering do you take any type of blood thinners such as Coumadin, Aspirin or Motrin. I work in a hospital and these type of medications, taken daily, can cause bruising.

Hi Jazcam, thanks for your email.

See, that's the mystery. I don't take any of those meds, but whenever I heavy-up on my weights, I bruise. It's weird. Probably should talk to my doc about it, but I just thought that if anyone else had experienced the same thing, they might be able to shed some light on it.

Thanks again.

I have had slight (very slight) bruising at times after lifting when really pushing it. It has been quite some time since this happened, but I recall it happening primarily in my forearm region. It didn't happen regularly--only when I was really pushing the weight--and the bruises usually disappeared very quickly (within a day or two at most).

I am not on any medications or blood-thinners to cause such bruising, but I do have a tendency to bruise easily (always have). Because of that latter point, I was never concerned about the bruising.

It has been a couple of years since this happened since I suffered a completely-unrelated-to-exercise injury about 18 months ago that has prevented me from lifting very heavy. I definitely don't experience the same thing now, and have seen no other unusual changes in my bruising since then, so I've never talked to a doctor about it.

I would say if you are concerned, you might see a doctor. But I just wanted to let you know that I've experienced the same thing.

Hi Debbie,

I haven't experienced bruising after weight lifting but I used to bruise very easily. (I barely bumped into something, and I'd have a large bruise to show for it. I joked that I could get a bruise from a nasty look.) I read that excessive bruising can be due to a vitamin C deficiency or anemia. I've dealt w/my anemia and take vitamin c daily and that has helped. Any chance you are anemic or deficient w/ vitamin C? Just a thought. Maybe something to ask your doctor like others have suggested. Good luck!

Chocolate IS the answer, regardless of the question.

Thanks for all of your input. I will be seeing my orthopedist next Tuesday on an unrelated issue, so I'll ask her then if she has any theories and let you guys know.

Thanks again!

My SIL bruises very easily, so after a hard workout week she was covered in bruises head to toe. She went to her doc and got bloodwork and found out she has a low platlet count. Nothing dangerous, she just bleeds a little harder and bruises a little easier than most people. She has it monitored and if it gets below a certain point she will have to be on a steroid. Point is, get some bloodwork done. She never would have guessed she had a low platlet count.

Wow, Sally, that sounds scary but makes perfect sense. Yep, a visit to my doc is in order. I'm calling on Monday, for sure.

Thanks and have a fab weekend! :D
