BOSU

To those of you who have a BOSU:
1. Where is the best place to buy one?
2. What tapes are good and
3. Do you find yourself using it alot? ( I hate to buy another piece of fitness equipment that I won't use) Thanks everyone!

I bought mine from www.bosu.com. I don't know if that is the best place, I've had mine for about a year so there's probably more places now to buy from.

I have Rob Glick's Cardio Fusion and Mindy's Sports Conditioning. But I find I don't do those tapes very often with it. Instead I prefer to incorporate it a lot into my strength workouts - especially core! I use it in many Cathe tapes sometimes substituting it for the stability ball (except for things where the ball needs to roll!) I actually use mine a lot, at least once a week usually more. It has taken me some time though to figure out all the different ways I can substitue it into other workouts, but I love it. For me this was a great investment. I know there are many other people on this forum who use it a lot as well so hopefully they'll chime in.

Also, a while back, Francine had posted how she substitues the BOSU for the stability ball in many workouts.

Lastly I sometimes incorporate old step tapes that have basic choreography and adapt them for a cardio workout on the BOSU. There's a lot of great things you can do with it. If all else fails, you can sit or lean on it if you have a lack of chairs! (Just kidding! - I sit on mine when I preview Cathe videos!) :7 :7

I bought my BOSU from bosu.com, too. I got mine last April, and I use it everyday! I love it as much as I do my step. There are alot of tapes or DVD workouts for the bosu, my favorite is the one with Keli Roberts and Mindy Mylrea called EXPLODE & BURN in which you use the body bar with it - there are so many options for the BOSU it is unreal.

You can incorporate it in basically all of your workouts. I use it for all of my core work even with planks. I use the flat side of the bosu it makes the exercises so much harder. It has totally cahnged and buffed up my abs - they are definitely cut up and defined after having 10 children!

I love mine and would never give it up!

After reading Cheryl's post, I just wanted to add, that I also do push-ups with the flat side up. I also think this was one of the best purchases I've ever made - right up there with my step!

Jo,

I have found myself doing more and more on the BOSU. I do the abs of Cathe's SJP all on the BOSU - it makes it a fryer - then for the planks I turn it over and hold the sides and boy oh boy I really work up a sweat! I love the side planks and obliques on it, too.

It seems to me that I think up something new to add everyday - I do all of C&W abs on the BOSU - just doing reverse curls is alot harder on it - my abs area really looking awesome and I know they would not look like this without the BOSU.

I do love the cardio work on it too Like Rob Glick's Cardio Fusion - I love doing squats, deadlifts and lunges on it too. Do you have Core Synergy? Now that is a good core workout. I remember when I first got it and saw them doing the bicycle on it and alternating touching their elbows to the floor - I was like "Yea, Right!" but within a few weeks I was doing it and now I can do it for a long time.

I still use the stability ball on the things that I cannot use the BOSU for - like the pikes - those are my favorites on the stability ball!

Cheryl

Wow Cheryl! You are where I'm trying to get to! I haven't tried squats or deadlifts! How are you doing those? Squats, one leg on and one off? What about the deadlifts - right now I can't picture it. If you're standing with both feet on, I assume you're going lighter in weight? Can you give me a little more info - I have to try that! I have done lunges though and definitely love to do planks! My upper body is lacking (I'm a pear) so I love the upper body challenge this gives me. I'm just finally starting to get a teensy bit of definition in my abs and I know its because of working with the BOSU.

I don't have Core Synergy, I asked Santa for it but apparently he didn't think I'd been a good enough girl! LOL! Or he thought I already got too may videos last year (I think the latter.) It's amazing though isn't it, once you start coming up with ideas they just keep coming!

So glad to find someone else who loves this as much as I do. I've seen many posts where people say their's is collecting dust and I think that's so sad!:7 :7

A Bosu ball would be really nice, but I am going to have to save for that, $120 dollars is pricey ...... Rhonda

Modells and Sports Authority have it listed as $99.99 on their web site. Don't know if the stores have them at that price, but I am going to check into it. Will let you know.

Jackie

I just got one at Oshman's for $99 and it comes with one free (pretty boring) tape and an offer for a free abs DVD. I ordered Mindy Mylrea's Explode DVD that also comes with an hour long workout from Keli Roberts. I did my normal floor abs routine on the BOSU today and I about DIED! Rob Glick's Cardio Fusion is supposed to be pretty good. I ordered it, but I don't have it yet.
So far, I have had the BOSU and my step out at the same time and if an exercise looked like it could be substituted on the BOSU instead of the step, I did that. It does kick up the intensity.

Cheryl,

Your post about doing C&W abs on the BOSU really intrigues me. I find that to be a pretty intense ab workout anyway. This may sound like a dumb question, but not having one, do you do C&W abs with the flat side down, and do you do all the work on your back balanced on the ball? What about the side obliques? For the walking planks, I guess you could use it facing either way; I assume that you have your feet on the BOSU. This sounds really cool. I had thought about asking for one for Christmas, but didn't...I don't know if I can wait the four months until my birthday!

Thanks for any advice you can give, and especially for the inspiration!:7

I can do all the ab work of Cathe's totally on the BOSU, now. It took me quite a while to build up to it and to figure out the ways to do it.

Actually on C&W I do keep my feet off the floor - I try not to keep my feet on the floor at all - that puts more of the work in the abs. For the obliques there are a few things you can do on it - such as lay with yur hip on the middle of the BOSU and balance straight out or balance on your elbow and lift your legs up and hold or you can lay on the BOSU sideways and lift up as Cathe does on the stability ball in SS, but you feel it so much more intensely!

Just a side note - we sent some of the past week up at our cottage, so I worked out in a different place - I worked out near a window this morning and caught my reflection in the window. I took a double take, for I could not believe how awesome my abs looked! I do not use a mirror when I work out. I have much more definition than I have ever anticipated having. When I saw the definiton, I looked at different views and I thought "WOW! All of that ab work on the BOSU has definitely paid off!"

Not that my abs look like Cathe's, but getting closer - I just have a little more loose skin than CAthe does ( not that she has loose sin at all). But I figure I have given birth to 10 children, so I feel really good about how my abs look.

The BOSU ws so worth it - since its not just for abs and core like some ab machines are.

Jo,

Have you got the BOSU / BODYBAR workout? Well, that one does squats and deadlifts with the body bar on the BOSU - so, you do not use heavy weights. I use an 18# bodybar. There are some really neat exercises on that DVD. I like to get different DVD's to give me ideas and it seems like everyday I think of how to do somethng different.

I couldn't believe when I read on here before that some people hate their BOSU. Now that I have it - I would be lost without it. That has strengthened my core than anything else. My obliques are so defined now - read my other post .

Hey, let me know when you and your husband get your new scale - the one that measures fat %. I have one, but it is really old - I fluctuate between 16% and 18% according to my scale. I am always 2% higher in the morning than at night!

Cheryl

Cheryl,

Thank you so much for your reply, I really appreciate it! I am very tempted now to get a BOSU.

Have a great weekend!

BOSU on carpet

Everyone,

This thread has about convinced me to buy a BOSU. I have a question, however, for anyone who has one. I would be using it on carpet. Would that be a problem, particularly with the cardio?

Thanks!

RE: BOSU on carpet

I don't see how it would be a problem to use it on carpet. To the above poster, I bought Explode & Burn at Mindymylrea.com. I LOVE LOVE LOVE her Awesome Intervals DVD so I have high hopes for this one too.

RE: BOSU on carpet

amy b,

I have Mindy's EXPLODE/ Keli's BURN and it is the DVD that I like the most - even thought I do love Rob Glicks which is all cardio.

The EXPLODE is awesomw because Mindy, does her first section called cardio/strength training. She does intervals of slow movements for the strength and then she ups it to doing the same moves faster. That is a killer. The funny thing is when she is done with that part she says, "If you want to do this segment again just rewind it, why you would want to do that I don't know!" But some days I do tend to do it twice - it is so fun and really tough.

Burn is slower paced, but Keli has a different teaching style, but don't let it fool you - her segments are good, too. Just not as fast paced. I do this DVD a couple times a week.

If you continue to do your abs on the BOSU, you will really see a big change in your abs!

RE: BOSU on carpet

Hi Cheryl,
I was going to ask you if Explode was the DVD I needed to get and you already answered my question...so I placed my order!

Regarding my scale: it has a problem and I'm sending it back! It weighs about 5 lbs heavier then my old inexpensive scale which is accurate with my Dr office. And, if you get on it a 2nd time it might weigh you even 5 lbs higher. It's way off! Also, probably because the poundage is screwed up it's putting my body fat at around 29% which I know is wrong as I'm more around 19-20%. Also my husband who is 14% - it showed him at 25%! It's really a hoot! Anyway, when I get that one replaced, I'll let you know!

RE: BOSU on carpet

Jo,

How disappointing to get the scale and have it be so off! I am interested in getting another fat% scale, since mine is old and it weighs really funny - meaning I weigh between 8.15 and 8.35 - that is not even kilograms - I have tried to change it - for it worked fine for a few years - but it does measure the fat level the same.

Let me know when you get the other one for I am interested - but if I remember corectly, wasn't it a little more expensive? I do remember you saying your husband wanting it.

You won't be disappointed in the EXPLODE/BURN DVD - Keli does the deadlifts and some good squat combos - Mindy's of course is the faster paced one. Keli does some unique stretches on the BOSU at the end also.
