Body for Life opinions please

Hi everyone-
I am rejoining this forum after sitting it out for too long. Happy to report I am working out and reaching my goals again. I enjoy reading the questions and opinions on this forum. I get soooo much good fitness information from you folks! I've recently read the "Body for Life" book I've been curious about for the past few years. My husband seems kind of obsessed with trying to get this "new body" in just 12 weeks. It seems too good to be true. Anyone out there have some experience and/or good results with the Body for Life program?

Great question! Today is my first day on BFL. I can't give you much feedback, except that it makes a lot of sense. There is a check in at the ya yas.

I read "Eating for Life", which is the eating plan that is a part of BFL...I have been following that as much as I can for a couple of weeks now...I really like it.

Have a great work out!

I've been doing it for about 2.5 years I think. I've strayed off plan twice. I am also probably about less than 10 lbs from goal weight but wanted more muscle tone. Felt "skinny fat". Whenever I haev started the challenge, I have lost 2-2.5 inches in my waist, hips and abdomen. I think about 3-5 lbs scale weight. It's a great program.

100% yes, to BFL. It will work. You have to be able to stick with it thought. My life style, work habits, made me lose the ball quite a bit. If you have the eating for life also, you can do it, Or husband.
I like gym style work outs any how so I'm all for free weight lifting. I believe he believes like Cathe, you really don't need a gym to get and keep a healthy Body. He can do it. Give him encouragement and go for it.

Changes will happen.

I came to Cathe because she is the only one I know who knows anything about gym style work outs and working free weights at home. This is my goal to perfect this at home. I canceled my membership to a gym because I know this can be done at home and not have to continually pay gym fees for what!!!!!

It's within me to do it and I will. !!!!

I agree! I think it is one of the best nutrition books on the market and it makes sense. You don't have to do without anything. You eat carbs and protein and one day a week you get to eat your treats.
Today is my first day back on BFL.I did it before but only made it to the 3rd week:-( Shame on me! The cheat day use to really get me.If I were you I would keep my cheat days to just a cheat meal or if you know you are getting together with some friends and will be having a few drinks.
I won't be able to follow the workout plan though. My work schedule just won't allow it.I am going to try my best though.I have wedding stand for in Aug so I figure it would be easier to lose the 10 lbs now and just maintain until the wedding (and my forver after)Instead of pushing it off until July month.
Good Luck,
Lori:)

I was on the BFL program several years ago and had good results! Everybody noticed how good I was looking and how much weight I was losing...but (and there's always a big "but")...I found out the the Myoplex was sweetened with aspartame, and that is a substance that I absolutely want nothing to do with, and I don't want it in my body. I tried to stay on the plan by substituting an appropriate snack in place of the Myoplex, but it wasn't as successful. My health mattered too much to me to stay on the plan with the aspartame-sweetened Myoplex, so I opted to discontinue it.

Plus, the workout schedule I was trying to follow by working out in the mornings before work was just too hard. Working out after work was not an option at the gym I was going to at the time (I'd stand around waiting for equipment more than I'd be using it - the only time I could get to the equipment I needed without waiting 10 minutes for it (which beats the whole point of the BFL program) was to go in the morning). I have to be at work early and getting up at 3:30-4:00 to work out is not something I can do without being late to the office -- and I hate to rush my workouts.

BFL: Great program, but not for everyone.

When we were faithful to the eating plan it was terrific! My husband loved the food, and we both felt great. His bad habits crept back it, and I try to stick with it but not nearly as diligently. Winter kills me. We get so much cold and snow that I tend to fall back into comfort foods and things I can make without cracking a recipe book. Summer is so much more inspiring and our snow is melting so I am sure we will be back to more BFL.

I also won't do Aspartame. So you might want to come back to the shakes, they have Sucralose (splenda) in them now. Much better for us.

If you want a package to see, I'll send you one.

Funny, I always hear about people standing waiting for a piece of equipment but i never really belived it happened. I guess none of the gyms I've been involved in were very busy. LOL.

Glad I'm home-gyming now.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I'm curious. How does BFL compare to South Beach Diet?

Thanks!

I did this faithfully for about 6 months ( about 4 years ago), and was in the best shape I had ever been in. I lost 20 pounds, but put on muscle and dropped 3 sizes. I was stopped when I herniated a disk in my back ( doing deadlifts incorrectly!), and it went downhill from there.

I did not think that it mattered whether you did your workouts for BFL in the am or pm, as long as you followed the pyramid style etc. As for the Myoplex, I never used any of those and it still worked for me.

BFL is 40% protein, 40% carbs and 20% fat. I have heard it is similar to South Beach maintenance phase, but haven't read up on South Beach.

Colleen

IMHO, you definatetly want to choose BFL. It lets you eat normal food. I tried the South Beach and was sick in the first 7 days. I don't know what was happening but I sold that book with the quickness.

In BFL you can eat carbs. They are good. They are not as evil as south beach will have you beliving. You can eat to me and that's a major difference. Bill suggests you eat 6 small meals per day. Now don't freak on the number 6. Those little ones are Milk shake meal replacements or things like cottage cheese and an apple. That is considered a meal. Another important thing. you will be happy in life with BFL. You stay on the eating change for a week and then on the 7th day, you get to choose, you can eat ANYTHING YOU WANT. Even M&Ms and Girl Scout cookies. You been so good all week so you can go for it. Heck, when it's sports weekend and it was super bowl Sunday, Bill Philips eats the junk just like everyone else.

If you've not been there the EFL web site is here so you can check the recipes and compare them to SB.

I was doing BFL really well for 8 weeks and lost 7 pounds but for the past couple of weeks I went off and gained back 3 pounds. The thing I get bored with are the workouts and cardio. I have to change it up and do. I am trying to get back on track this week. BFL now has nutrition bars and I really like the cookies and cream and usually have one for my afternoon snack. I haven't found any shakes that I like so I don't do those.

Sounds like a lot of interest in the program. Do we need a separate BFL checkin to keep us all motivated and honest????? The recipes I have used from the EFL book have been really good, I also use recipes from Cooking Light.

Rhonda

I think there is a BFL check in under the open discussion.

I just have it cause I like it and I know it works. I don't do the exercise as I get board. But I love love love gym style work outs. To me that is either pyramid or sets with the very needed rest periods.

When I visited Pure Strenght today for the first time, My eyes frowned as Cathe just went from one to the next and no rest. So, I guess, I have to get another DVD to get the work out that I like. Wish I had that answer a week ago. !!!!!

Bill is on point in his teaching of weight lifting but very boaring. LOL. :0 Especially when you're doing it alone. You write your program, look at the sheet, do another set, look at the sheet. I was done with that.

That is EXACTLY what I'm afraid of. I know I won't keep doing all that monitoring. I guess if I want something badly enough I'll do it, but I'm afraid I won't. x(

I am a believer in BFL. I know that when I follow BFL as close to the book as possible I have great results. My friend won BFL 2 yrs ago!

I don't think it is absolutely necessary that you do workouts in the a.m. if that doesn't work for you. I do them in the morning on some days but some days I do them in the afternoon.

Also, I change up the cardio and even weights sometime for some variety. I agree that to some degree he is "teaching" weight training. Sometimes I add in a total body weight day on Fridays. I do more than 20 minutes cardio mostly b/c I don't hardly run. I usually do Cathe workouts or at the gym. I stick to the intervals for cardio or the killer step classes at the gym. For weight training I usualy do one each of lower body and upper body at home, one at the gym each week for variety!

Same here. After about 2 years, with some on again off again, I still find I get the best results by the book, but I also know if I get too bored I won't continue. I usually do 4 weeks by the book, 4 weeks S&H and 4 weeks pyramids. For cardio, I do intervals either one of the IMAX videos or the stair climber at the gym.

Colleen

I don't know much about the BFL plan. I have read the info on the website and have general idea about the plan.

Do you have a calorie target for this plan?

Thanks!:)

Valerie

you don't need a calorie target nor a scale nor a notebook for points. You eat and if you eat the correct serving size, you it happens. I've lost my 10 with it and now I just fix what I'm going to fix and I know what to combine what with what in the correct proportion size.

The book tells you how to measure that. No calorie crap what so ever.
