Body-face disconnect & make-up

I'm reasonably content with my body as long as I'm consistent with my core exercises. (For the very first time in my life I actually have a 25" waist! I'm not the small waist type, and I was so surprised, I had to measure 3 times to believe it). So I'm good on the body front. But guess what? The leaner I get, the older my face looks. My lines and wrinkles are more prominent now. My birthday is coming up, and I'd like to give myself a face makeover. I'm going to need things like primer and other layers under my foundation now. I live in NYC and can try anything, but where to begin? Anyone have a make-up line they love for aging skin? All suggestions welcome.

WAY TO GO on the 25-inch waist!!! That's great!! As for your face, you are lovely! But if you're looking for new products, I suggest Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair. It's fabulous! I was using it and now am using Prescriptives Super Line Preventer Xtreme instead (because it was cheaper). However, as soon as the Prescriptives is gone, I'm returning to Night Repair. It's wonderful. Here's a link: http://www.esteelauder.com/product/spp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CAT1173&PRODUCT_ID=4595 Another thing I've been doing is putting a very very very thin layer of grapeseed oil (just from the grocery store) on my face at night this winter (on top of the wrinkle gel). I read in Health Magazine that Grapeseed oil has wrinkle fighting properties. I could tell a huge difference. Just don't use too much or you'll clog your pores.

Thanks, Steph! (Why in the world are YOU worried about wrinkles? You're a mere babe). I actually used the Prescriptives Night Repair for about 6 weeks or so (sales lady gave me a travel size for free!) and it was pretty good. Maybe I should have kept using it.

To be perfectly honest, at the moment I'm looking more for something to fraudulently soften my look, rather than actually change my skin, although of course I want both. I'm going to my high school reunion and I want to look good FAST! I guess I need a shot of instant confidence.

It's probably good that you're starting so early. Hats off to you, my dear.

Nancy, I think you look fabulous! However, I know exactly what you're talking about!

Funny story... I had lunch with my 22 year old DS the other day and we saw some friends of his in the restaurant. They saw the two of us from across the room and thought I was his girlfriend. Of course, I am positive they wouldn't have thought that if they saw me up close, full face. So, I understand the body/face disconnect.

Congrats on the 25 inch waist!

What # HS reunion are you attending? I attended my 35th back in the fall. It was a lot of fun, and I admit to feeling pretty good about myself compared to all the other ladies in my class. It seems that not everyone is dedicated to taking care of themselves. :(

Get a peel!! Even gentle one from an estheticians office will be great!

I use brozer and soft colors to make myself look more youthful.

Creststrips teeth whitener, bronzer, and a soft pink gloss, concealer under my eyes pep me right up!

I was a makeup artist by trade before the kiddos, and I could always sell those products because they work!

I totally agree with sammy123 and Philosophy. I use both products mentioned (and others!) and wouldn't be without them, especially the serum. They have made a world of difference in my skin. Philosophy's cleanser, Purity Made Simple, is the BEST cleanser ever for taking off make up. Plus, it has totally improved the condition of my skin.

I also recommend a Clarisonic facial cleaner. It really gets in there to clean your skin and get rid of dirt and make up you can't see. I noticed that my make up went on so much better and I looked so refreshed after the FIRST use!! It's a great product.

Congrats on your teeny tiny waist, Nancy!! :)

Wow Nance, your waist is only a few inches bigger than my upper thigh! Oy... You teeny gal!

Hey Nancy,

I would recommend going to Macy's (or something of the sort) and going to one of the make-up counters. That way you can try the make-up before you buy. I recently needed something to help with the darkness under my eyes, and I visited the Bobbi Brown counter. They tried a couple different options and I bought what I thought looked best. Hope this helps!

Have you checked out Bare Escentuals, Nancy?

They have products that prep your skin for foundation. They also have primers for eyelids & lips, etc. I love their products.

I would absolutely NOT go to the makeup counters at the department stores! One, they work off commission and will try to sell you anything and everything, the more expensive, the better! They love people who don't know what they need or want! You'll walk out of there spending a fortune! And, speaking of spending a fortune, those products are super expensive, way over-priced and full of all kinds of chemicals and stuff you don't even want anywhere near your body!

I know, I used to wear Estee Lauder and Clinique!

Emu oil products are wonderful for your skin! Amazon carries some skin care and hair care emu oil products.

At least research different products online and what types of things work for wrinkles and lines before you hit any stores. At least that way, you can show that you have some knowledge of what you're looking for!

I've been using Oil of Olay products and have no issues with wrinkles and the small eye lines I used to have are so faint, you can't even see them anymore! They have a website that will help guide to what products would be right for you. Try them as well.

Good luck!

Nancy, I know exactly what you mean.

When I see my body in my workout mirror, I'm pretty happy with the way it looks. Then I look up to my face and think "Yikes!"

IIRC, it was one of the Gabor sisters who said that, after a certain age, you have to choose between the face and the body. (It's pretty evident which one they chose!).

No specific makeup suggestions, but since lines and wrinkles look dark, one way to camoflage them is to use some kind of highlighter that you blend in. They are a liquid make up (though I suppose a pencil would work as well) that come in a pen-sized dispenser. I've used one by Principal Secret, and also have seen other brands (a REALLY good one used to be made by some company I can't recall, and I LOVED it, but they don't make it anymore, at least not that I can find. )

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think the Gabor sisters were absolutely right!

A few hotties I know swear by MAC cosmetics.

I used MAC for awhile and liked it, but I don't think they have what it takes to deal with truly over-the-hill skin. I did have a great makeover at the Laura Mercier counter one day, but there were so many products involved, it made my head spin. But at least they seemed to know how to deal with wrinkles and such.

I am an Oil of Olay gal, but my aunt uses Strivectin (sp?). It is super expensive, like $100 a bottle, but it works for her.

Nancy, I use Laura Mercier and I like it alot. I use her Hydrating Foundation Primer, Silk Creme Foundation and Pressed Setting Powder all the time. I also have some of her shadows, blushes and her Secret Camouflage. I haven't found anything to actually hide all the wrinkles and aging but I do really like LM. I have horrible skin INR but have found that my skin looks better in pics with this makeup than it should. Or I might just be thinking it does because I can't see anymore either.

If used properly, LM can work beautifully. But it is so darn expensive, I'm almost tempted to just go to the Chanel counter instead!

True, it is very expensive but it lasts quite awhile. I don't use her other skin care products. I use O of O for a moisturizer and that's it. I've spent big bucks and tried other skin care products over the years and really can't tell the difference when I use them so I don't. I do have a Retin A prescription that I use occasionally but I'm not consistent with that either. Good luck in your search. Let us know what you come up with.
