body changing

I'm 481/2 years old, and I noticed in the last 6 months my body must be changing because pants that I wore a few months ago I cant fit into now , I'm still eating clean exercising etc. Does anyone know if your weight just shifts differently when you get older ? Its really getting me down because I havent changed in my routine. Please any opionions welcome, Thanks

not cathe, but I went thru the same thing last year. I suddenly had a stomach. Just keep doing what you're doing. I know that is probably not the answer youwant to hear, but it is just a change in your body. Keep smiling:)

Not Cathe either, but I just reached a similar milestone. Congrats to you!

I have found, however, that I have to tweak my diet and play around a bit to figure out what is still working, and what is not. Even though I'm sure that, as you say, you are still eating "clean" there may be some things that your body processes differently now, compared to when you were younger. For example, I have to pay closer attention than ever to what carbs I eat, how much of them I eat, and when (as in time of day) I eat them. When I'm not mindful of these kinds of details, the consequences are immediate.

Anyway, hope this is of some help.:) :)

I'll have to chime in and agree with that age may effect where it goes. I've gained 2 inches in the waist in the last two years. (46 now) Haven't been paying attention to the diet as much and the body has decided to keep weight in the mid-section. I never had that when younger. I have had the same changes with the carbs, my body doesn't seem to process them as easily anymore. It probably is all connected to our hormones, since hormones play a big role in most every function of the body. I'm sure it will stabilize once the dreaded really starts and or menopause is completed.

I sure hope that you find what works for you, hopefully just a little tweaking of the diet will help.

Me too, me too! I am 46 and am experiencing a thickening of the midsection -- no more 27" waist for me. I haven't changed my exercise routine lately, but I'm starting to think that I need to "shock" my body. I am thinking it's going to be more work at this age to maintain my physique. I don't seem to process carbs as well either -- I've started limiting starchy carbs to breakfast and lunch, and am having green veggies, peppers, etc. at dinner (instead of my old potatoes or pasta).

The increase in abdominal fat is a normal part of approaching menopause, as explained well in "outsmarting the mid-life fat cell." Apparently estrogen is changed into the active form in those fat cells, and your body is trying to get more fat there in order to make more estrogen as it senses the levels declining. I went through menopause this year and had terrible hot flashes, until I got a little careless with the diet and gained 2 pounds of ab fat. All of sudden the hot flashes went away. So I think there really is something to that theory. That said, you can improve your waistline with diet/exercise but I don't think it will ever go back to where you were. The thought of increasingly rigourous exercise and restricted diet, when you are already doing fine in those areas, just gives me the chills! Just relax and enjoy menopause, and celebrate the fact that your waist and hip are finally proportioned correctly (if you were a pear.)

Frankly, if my exercise and diet routine get any harder, I will drop on the floor and never get up. I plan on liposuction if I start to gain in the tummy as I get older. Seriously, I have no problems with surgery if done as a last resort. I am never going to accept bellyfat! I will fight it with everything I can.
I am 41 now,so far so good....}(

Oh my gosh!!! I am 43 and have just been complaining to friends about this very thing. I have not gained any weight but my midsection seems to have changed. I hate it and I am seriously considering liposuction if it does not respond to a change in my diet. I cannot workout any harder so I'm trying a cleaner diet first. If that doesn't work, then surgery is my last resort. I will fight it with everything I've got too!!

When I was younger and before I had a child, I worked out diligently, had a bikini body but still complained about the little "pooch" in my lower abdomen area. Now I'm 44 years old with a teen-aged son, and my "pooch" has turned into a spare tire. I think it's just the curse of Mother Nature - we have to work twice as hard to get the same results we had when we were younger. Cathe is our inspiration -- she is 43 but looks fantastic! She is the poster child of fitness for middle-aged women. Geez - I just admitted for the first time that I'm middle-aged! Oh well - middle-aged women RULE!

This post is too funny! Hey I'm 45 and guess what? I've been struggling with the waist issue too! I am also determined not to give in - but not going there with liposuction - only as a joke!!

What I've been doing lately is eating lower carb, oat or wheat bread 2 slices a day, getting in bits of protein breakfast, snack, etc. (string cheese, small bits of deli turkey). Have stopped with the mashed potatoes and peanut butter for now!

So, in essence, I am eating only what I need to to feel full. Then I always have food nearby at work if I am still hungry. I still have a snack at night, but try to keep it clean- yogurt or fruit. But, last night I had a mint Oreo cookie......just one.

I figure this month is a hard month to even maintain your weight so I figured I'd really eat clean this month, and I'm working out 45-60 min. a day.

Yes, I agree, Cathe is the poster-child for us almost-middle aged women:7 She's a great motivator!
