BMR and TDEE Calculators added to WM

We’ve now added a BMR calculator and a TDEE calculator to our Workout Manager.

Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), is the energy, measured in calories expended by your body at rest (if you stayed in bed all day) to maintain normal bodily functions and accounts for 60 – 70% of the total calories you burn each day.

TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) is the total number of calories that your body burns in 24 hours, including all activities and exercise (TDEE = BMR + calories burned from activities and exercise). Click on the “settings” icon above and fill out the requested information and that the Workout Manager will automatically calculate your TDEE for you.

Your BMR and TDEE in the Workout Manager will not show unless you fill out all of the required info and click "Save":

1. Your weight - this is done in the weigh in tab
2. Your height - settings tab
3. Your age - settings tab
4. sex: - settings tab
5. Activity level - settings tab

I always get confused as to my activity level. I sit on my butt all day at work, but I workout hard about an hour a day, 6-7 days a week. Overall, that probably falls under moderate, right? I don't think it would be very active, but I'm not a slug, either.

Newsletter - BMR and TDEE

Cathe is currently writing two articles that will appear in our next two newsletters that will help you understand your BMR and TDEE better and why they're so important.

Spyrosmom, I'm the same way because I don't have time during the week to workout more than once a day. Our company is now promoting a campaign called Healthy U in which my particular building has a walking path inside so we can get up from our desk during the day to be more active. I come home and workout for an hours at least 6 days a week.

Maybe your company can start something like that, it might help with all the sitting we typically do with office jobs :D

That's good news! I like having this information....but I'm not sure quite what it all means exactly or what to do with it......Cathe to the rescue!

SNM: Maybe I missed it last time, but is there a way you could have a category with sticky threads for the articles Cathe is going to be writing. We could go there and ask questions that either she or you could answer on that specific topic's thread.

I am very interested in this next one too (BMR/TDEE). Sit at my desk all day but try to kick it up a notch with Cathe once a day.

Last request: I see the BF has to be input by us. Is there a way you could use a calculator to calculate our BF? I use the Navy method which uses parameters you ask for (neck, waist and hips)? I guess it would need to be an option since some might have more accurate methods for monitoring BF.

Thanks for all you do.

Body fat

The problem with Body fat is it is usually measured by most people incorrectly and people get caught up in believing the number they see. Body Fat is a great tool, but it needs to be measured correctly to be meaningful. I am concerned about using body dimensions to calculate body fat in the Workout Manager because of the inaccuracy and peoples tendency to believe a "number" even when it may be way off and completely wrong.

Cathe's Newsletter articles will also be available in our Blog under Fit tips. You can post comments or questions there or here in our forums and Cathe or our staff will try to answer your questions.
