Hey All!

I was at the salon this morning and was handed a nifty list of all the stores that will be closing after Xmas. Even if they know they are closing as of Jan 1 they can and are still selling gift cards. Here are some of stores. There are 30 or so on the list, feel free to ask for more.

Anne Taylor (117 stores)
Eddie Bauer (some stores)
J Jill (all stores)
Pacific Sunwear (all stores)
GAP (100 stores)
Footlocker (150 stores)
Disney (98 stores)
Home Depot (15 stores)
Linens and Things (all stores)
Movie Galley (all stores)
Sharper Image (all stores)
KB Toy (365 stores)
Dillard's (some stores)

So if you get a gift card to one of these places use it December 26. :D

Check out the info at Snopes.com. There's been an email circulating recently that is giving some inaccurate information about these retailers--someone at work forwarded it to me. Most of these companies aren't going out of business for good and the stores in your area could still be open after the first of the year.

i recently saw this on snopes too. there are some that are closing stores but the company themselves are not belly up except circuit city. oh and steve and barry's was bought out but they are only closing smaller stores like the one in my area.

kb toys has been closed down in my area WELL before the economy went to heck. they just couldn't compete with toys r us,target, and wal-mart near by.

Circuit City is in reorg, not totally belly up. DH has been keeping an eye on them since he used to work for them years ago and still has a small retirement due to him when he's at that age. They're closing down their Atlanta market and California as well as a lot of other markets that are farther from their headquarters.

Still and all, I think the good message out of this is not to hang on to those cards too long. Not only may you not have anywhere to redeem them, but they may expire!

Thanks for the Snopes update! Funny thing is two friends have emailed me this afternoon with the same list!

I got this e-mail quite a while back. It almost seems like it was last year sometime, but my brain is so fried at the moment I can't remember. I'm still morning the loss of Casual Corner myself. Oh Sparrow, I have to tell you that I giggle every time I read the title of this thread "BEWARE THE GIFT CARDS"! It sounds so Edgar Allen Poe'ish! ;)

So I wonder if this means that some of these stores (especially ones like J. Jill, where all stores are closing) will be having some really good "going out of business" sales?

when steve and barry's mentioned going out of business everything in the store was $3 or 2 for $5(socks were 2 for $3). i really cleaned up for christmas last week. viola is pretty set for now LOL.

i haven't heard about any other closings in the area but usually they have some good stuff. when value city closed they didn't have all that great of bargains really.

Good point to remember even if the list that is circulating is not completely accurate. Listening to the news should help some as I am hearing of a few of those listed and have watched some of the stores close.

Here in CA there seems to be almost every store in every town/city and we can be only 15 min apart. Always wondered how so few people could support some of the larger stores.

But Buyer beware and let it be known to your recipients too.

All the Circuit City stores here are closing, and they have signs up saying "up to 30% off". That's not good enough for me...I'm heading in when they get to 80%!:p

Unfortunately, there may be some truth to that email. I am a merchandiser and go to different malls and stores and business is very slow. Unless there is a sale and coupon people are not shopping (who can blame them). They are saying black Friday maybe red Friday. The stores plan on having lots of sale days thru the holidays (even better then black Friday).

I am not buying store gift cards, if anything I will purchase Visa gift cards. After the holidays there will be a lot of layoffs and store closures in the retail business.

P.S. What is sad is the sales associates get in trouble if there department don't open a certain amount of "new" credit cards each day.

some are really strong armed about it. hey if i thought i could afford to do another credit card i would but how many get strong armed into it then can't afford the bill!! ppl at target have been getting the clue. i will shop here but don't bother me about your credit card every time i shop.

i wish retailers would understand credit is nothing to give away. look at the banks that are doing crappy. that could be them b/c yeah somebody used the credit card but now can't pay the bill. now you lost more money b/c your product wasn't really paid for and the person didn't pay what they owe and that turns around on consumers like me who won't buy things unless its cash.

i got dh to learn his lesson. credit cards are for emergencies ONLY! if you want something pay cash, if we don't have it save it until we do.

I don't know about J Jill specifically, but our Linens and Things is having a gigantic going out of business sale, but no more than 50% off at this point. IIRC from when a local department store went under about 15 years ago, they had progressive reductions until the end. The only things left by the time they got to 80% off was junk.

Yeah, I hate those "up to" sales : they can often mean most everything has a much lower discount, and only 1 item in the store has to be 30% off!
