Beware the Gift Cards!

All the Circuit City stores here are closing, and they have signs up saying "up to 30% off". That's not good enough for me...I'm heading in when they get to 80%!:p

I went to Circuit City last weekend. I got a few CDs which were 20% off. The shelves seemed to be emptying out on the DVDs and CDs but nothing else seemed to be moving. I saw many people coming out of the store with nothing. I didn't see any great bargains there. I certainly wouldn't buy any electronics with no way of returning it if things aren't working properly. Everything is final sale.

I just received this email from Ann Taylor.....

Dear Valued Client:

It has come to our attention that false and misleading information, regarding our Company and our store closure program, is circulating on the Web, as part of a hoax to scare consumers away from purchasing gift cards. Ann Taylor is a financially strong Company that operates nearly 1,000 Ann Taylor, LOFT, Ann Taylor Factory and LOFT Outlet stores across the U.S. In January 2008, we announced plans to close some underperforming stores, as part of a strategic restructuring program to make us an even stronger Company that can continue to serve you in the future. Our gift cards continue to be a popular and great option for gifting this Holiday season and can be redeemed at any of our stores, as well as online at anntaylor.com and anntaylorLOFT.com. We look forward to serving you again soon!

I received the same email from Ann Taylor Loft. So I went to the J Jill site and they also had a statement confirming that they are not closing all their stores! :)

This thing is really sad. There's enough REAL economic news to scare us without the made up stuff. I'm not sure what anyone has to gain over this other than some kind of weird satisfaction that they've created a stir. :(

Oh, and OP and others here, please don't think I'm talking about you! I'm talking about whoever started the email and the rumors that mix truth with fiction to create drama.
