I have subscribed to Oxygen this past year and it's now time to renew. I like that magazine a lot, but lately I've read here in the forum differnt fitness magazines that may be better; such as MF Hers, Shape, and I think Fitness RX (?) was mentioned too. Any suggestions?

I really like Energy .... and you did mention FitnessRX...
they seem to be about the best.. in my opinion! :p

Good to hear you all like this magazine. I have picked up a copy here and there, and really enjoyed it. When a local kid came around the other day selling subscriptions as a school fundraiser, I signed up for this one. I like it better than Shape etc. as well.

m&f hers use to be a great magazine. I just ordered it and was so disappointed in it. It was covered with ads for suplements and ads that looked like articles for supliments. Very disappointing. Muscle & Fitness has always been good though.

I used to always recommend "Muscle and Fitness Hers", but it's been taken over by a new editorial staff, and if the last two issues are any indication, the quality (as well as the number of pages) has gone down. Now it's becoming pretty much a clone of "Fit" "Fitness" and "Shape".

My favorite now is "Energy for Women". I just hope it doesn't start to change to reach a wider market.

I also like Energy for women the most. Oxygen annoys me intensely because it is filled to bursting with pages on who's who in body buliding and olympia contests and the like, like a give a s**t! So I am not renewing my sub to that mag, plus they had a questionable article recently on a fitness pro who ran fast food businesses, claiming that they were so easy to run, so profitable, and this revenue supported her pursuit of Ms. Fitness titles and the body beautiful. So, like, it's OK for her to cram shitty food laced with fat down the throats of others, make a fast buck on it and then hypocritically shun such fare as she transmits a message of building a healthy body in the pages of Oxygen.

I complained to the editor about their hypocrisy. Do you think I ever got a respectful reply?!?!?!?

Shape is fitness magazine"lite", as are Fitness and there's another, name escapes me.

Better than subscribing to any of these is reading them in Borders over a latte for free (well, cost of a latte) and coming to this site for info and tips!

A few years ago .. they had Fit magazine for over 40 .. I read somewhere ... it has started circulation again.. I am 47 ,, I am looking for that magazine let me know if any or you see it!
thanks ;-)

I've always enjoyed M&F Hers and as an art director, I loved the magazine's design. I liked the more feminine color scheme and I thought the cover design was unique. Unfortunately, with the latest issue, they launched a whole new look that's supposed to be so much better and easier to read and understand. I was disappointed, but so much of this is personal preferences. They are definitely in a transition phase and I guess we'll have to wait and see how things shake out.

I picked up a copy of Shape off the newsstand and really liked it. It seems to offer a broader scope of content, including skincare and make up tips, which I thought was great. I guess a lot depends on what your priorities are and what you're looking for.

I'm glad that it's not just me who noticed MF Hers change. I picked up this months issue after not reading it for a while, and what should have been a good indication is the advertisment of the back of the mag. The guy packing my groceries saw it and said "THAT'S DISCUSTING". Having not noticed it, I just gave him a "look" (I was thinking it was a picture of a woman with some muslces that HE didnt approve of). When I looked for myself, he's right. What's with peanut butter all over her boobs!! Gross! In a womens magazine at that.

I used to be an avid reader of Shape. Actually, I still have 2 years left on my subscription. But it seems that each issue is pretty much a replica of its previous issues. The models are the same, the exercises are the same, the resort/spa articles are all the same, the free-up-your-time articles are all the same... I wouldn't recommend it, and agree that those are best to browse in a bookstore... then if you happen to find an article that means something to you, you can buy it. Unfortunately, I don't think you'll find too many unless you are a beginner beginner.

Fitness seems to have become mildy better, offering more health and research related articles, like Prevention did back in the day.

I haven't found a magazine that I like too much anymore. The Fit, Oxygen, M&F Hers all seem to push those energy bar/body builder articles that really drive me bonkers. I will find articles that I like once in awhile, though... but I read those over my lattes as well:D

I like Health magazine... but I haven't read too many magazines yet to know how consistently good it is. But if anyone else has anymore suggestions, I like to hear them too.

Lately I have been just buying Oxygen and Fitness RX.I find that all of the other mags are not what they use to be.Or maybe there was a point in time when I wanted to be 5'11" and 125lbs but that ain't happening. My opionin is that Fitness,Shape, and self, have articles that a women wants to hear about but when you buy the mag,it's just a big let down. But like I said, maybe its b/c I have grown that I am not interested in these mags anymore.
I like mags that talk about weight lifting.Proper form and proper nutirtion. Not about how to make yourself skip a period.I thought that was a bit much.
Anyway, those would be my two fav's if I had to subscribe to something.

I bought FitnessRx at the suggestion of someone on this board. What a good mag! Better than any of the others mentioned.

Men's Health has some great workout articles and Muscle Media has good articles, but FitnessRx is for women, not too fluffy and has great articles and info. Not anti-protein like some (they say you should eat more protein, especially if you're strength training, than lots of outdated sources say).

ACE Fitness Matters and the IDEA Source magazines are great. They're oriented toward fitness professionals (group fitness instructors and personal trainers) but anyone can subscribe. Has a lot of good research into various aspects of exercise and nutrition, debunks a lot of myths and provides a lot of consumer protection information, and is oriented far more toward fitness for health rather than aesthetics alone.

Actually, thát's last month's issue (well, it probably says "October", but it's not the latest). At least that one had content similar to what it was before. The newest issue is almost unrecognizible: the cover looks more like "Fit" or "Fitness", there are about 20 fewer pages, and there is proportionately more beauty/food stuff than fitness (I bought it for th efitness info)

I think my favorites are Oxygen and Muscle and Fitness hers. I have bought others. I think Fitness RX and Energy would be good if there was more to them. I have read articles in different ones, including my favorites, that I thought were totally irresponsible. One such case was a fitness competitor saying if she had a last minute photo shoot, she would take an herbal diueretic for a couple of days and cut all salt along with some other things. I thought, what if other women tried this. In my opinion that is dangerous.

I'm so glad others were also turned off by the peanut butter on the boobs advert! This is such an unecessary advert!!! Who can the target audience be for such titillation(no pun intended!)? Let's take a guess........

Remember now girls, if you want to be fit and healthy, smear your chest with sandwich fillers for best results!

Hard to think of a more useless advert I've seen recently. My 7 and 10 year old girls laughed like drains when they saw it, they were like, huh?

What's the worst you have seen? Maybe we should start a thread on the topic?!?!

Clare

Yeah, the peanut butter and boobs ad was a bit much.I never really read it or tired to understand it.
One of the things that tunred me off from shape or fitness, was a article that contained info on how to make your period skip! I thought that was a bit odd.For a mag that is suppose to be talking about a healthy way of living,I think thats not so healthy.
Don't get me wrong, I hate starting my period just as much as the next person but I think that it is very unnatural to make it "go away"
