Beginner Kick Box

I am intrigued by Kickboxing. I haven't done any, except for brief sections of some of Cathe's videos where she throws in some kickboxing moves. Do you have a recommendation for a Cathe kickboxing video that would be appropriate for someone who hasn't done any kickboxing? I find the kicks and punches very cathartic! }(

I don't think Cathe's kickboxing is really appropriate for beginners. Instead, a workout with more instruction (like the Kathy Smith kickboxing workout) would be better at this stage.

You could try the Tae Bo series. They're very basic & I believe you can get a beginner, intermediate & advanced workout.

I know most people hate her, but I learned with Denise Austin Power Kickboxing. It really is a good workout if Denise doesn't bother you.

I don't know if I agree that Cathe should not be the starting place for kick boxing. In Kick Punch and Crunch she warms up by taking you through the kicks and punches. I think the most complicated move in KPC is the jump front kick. If you've been doing the basic moves like in Circuit Max or some of the other videos that she does, you can do KPC. That one is my favorite, although I like all of them. I'd start with that one, and really watch her moves carefully. I think you'll be fine.

I too would recommend Kathy Smith's kickboxing workout as a starting point. She really breaks down how to do the kicks properly. I have to confess that I had my brown belt in karate when I started doing the kickboxing tapes so I didn't need to learn from the tapes. Another option would be to take a few live classes. You don't want to hurt yourself. When watching a tape, really pay attention to foot position and concentrate on form rather than height of kicks. Be especially careful if you're working out on carpet.
Have fun!

I think she does a really good job in Cardio Kicks, too. Everything is broken down with enough reps to get a good feel for it before incorporating it into combos.

I totally agree that Kathy Smith's Kickboxing is a great place to start. That one taught me how to kickbox, and now I can keep up during my kickboxing class. I am currently working on 10*10*10, which I could never have done without the instruction from Keith Cooke on the KS DVD.

Has anyone had any luck with Kickboxing to break a plateau? I added it to my step rotation, and I'm hoping results will follow. (I'm hoping for another 5 lb weight loss and better muscle tone in my legs.) Any comments or suggestions?
