barbell??

I'm sort of new to Cathe. I have a ton of Firm tapes, but have never purchased a barbell - just always used my dumbells. I just got the Rhythmic Step DVD and I'm debating over whether to ask for the Cardio Hits DVD for my birthday, or whether to pick a strength one. So, my question is 2 fold. I was leaning toward the Power Max/MIS/Body Max DVD, is that a good strength selection? And, if I go that route, how important is the barbell? Can I get by with dumbells in her workouts for awhile?

Thanks for the help!

Yes, you can get by with dumbells for the majority of Cathe's strength tapes by modifying a few exercises here and there. However I cant comment on the Slow & Heavy series b/c I havent done that one yet. And, Power Hour is much more fun and effective in my opinion with a barbell. I put off purchasing a barbell for almost a year while I did Cathe tapes, and then I finally broke down and purchased one. I suggest you start saving your money....other than Cathe tapes in general and a long step, my barbell has been my best purchase to date. I love it!! You feel so strong and it does work the muscles slightly different then when using dumbells for the same exercise. Have fun!!

P.S. Rhythmic Step as your first purchase was bold.....if you arent used to Cathe's choreography this tape may take more than a few rewinds, but it's well worth. Dont get discouraged! Cathe does have tapes that are a bit easier in the choreography category.

I agree with what Stacy said. Just want to add a couple of things - S&H does use barbells, but you could always modify that. I bought a Troy Lite Barbell (looks like similar to the ones they used in Power Hour) from www.fitness1st.com. It only weights 5 lbs and 5 feet long.

This is just my opinion - since you already have Rhythmic Step DVD, it is probably better to get strength DVD. Just so that you get both cardio and strength training in your workout. BTW, Cardio Hits is the DVD I started with, and it is a good DVD to get too.
