Barack Obama is President of the United States of America

Primarily funded by $30K/plate dinners, $10K/plate luncheons, and celebrity endorsements. Jus' sayin.....

No, mostly funded by people like me who donated $ 25 or 50 where possible.

It is nice for a change that the Democratic Party pulled even with the Republican money raising machine.

Then we'll agree to disagree cuz the $30K/plate dinners and $10K/plate dinners were pubicized.

I would have voted for Obama if her were red or purple. The color of his skin did not matter to me. It was what he stood for that mattered.

Interesting how many voters turned out for this election that couldn't be bothered to vote 4 years ago, and that perhaps might STILL not have bothered to vote if both candidates were white males.

Wow!!!! Maybe it is that 80 % of the people think the country is going down the wrong direction and it has NOTHING to do with race.

It was all about the issues for me in this election, and I just couldn't agree w/Obama's. Are you prepared for socialized medicine?! It scares the dickens out of me to even think about it!!

Can I ask what you consider "socialized medicine"?

DH popped the champagne when the networks announced Obama won. :D I am over the moon with joy, relief and pride. I dislike Keith Olbermann but I had to agree with his remark that this was a "man on the moon" moment for our country. I would love to take my kids to see President Obama's inauguration...**happy sigh**

There is no denying that the economic state of this country is a mess. I believe that a large percentage of the population voted for Obama b/c they believed any Republican candidate would fail them as GW has done.

McCain said he wouldn't accept any public financing for his campaign, and Obama said he'd do the same, but then he reneged!

Socialized medicine? Ask your Canadian friends how they like having socialized medicine..... where you WAIT for appointments, and you are seen when and by whom the GOVT dictates. It's a far cry from the medical care we currently have access to in this country. I pray I'll always remain healthy!!

Well, I've said much more than I normally would say on a public message board... with regard to politics anyway. Obviously, I'm just very disappointed with the outcome of the election. Oh well.....

Congrats to our President-Elect. I hope he does as good a job as the nation is expecting.

Obama ran one of the most amazing campaigns in US history. I think he has the judgement and temperment to be president and certainly the intelligence. To say that he couldn't even run a company the size of SNM I think is shortsighted.
I agree.
And remember that no president does anything alone. He (so far;)) surrounds himself with advisors, and I think Obama has the knack for choosing good advisors, from either party.

And it's refreshing to have a president who seems presidential, is articulate, and projects intelligence.

One thing I found interesting about Obama's campaign : he spent 3x as much on ads as McCain, but that money came mainly from small donations from a lot of people. Katy Couric mentioned that the average donation to Obama's campaign was something like $80-$85 (can't remember, as it was getting late!).

I hope that after 16 years of extreme bipartisanship this country will realize that we have to pull together in order to get us out of the ditch, no ONE person can do that alone.
I hope so as well. And I hope that bitter Republicans don't work against Obama just to keep him from making progress.

Totally agree w/ all that's mentioned above!:D

You're kidding, right? I'm Canadian. We have an extremely high standard of healthcare in this country. The government does not, nor have they ever, dictated when I see my doctor or a specialist or have a test. Nobody in my family has ever had to wait for an important test or procedure, and trust me when I say there have been a LOT of those types of things over the years. I can't say enough good things about the health care system in my country.

As a former Republican I think Republicans have no one to blame but themselves. They have strayed so very far from traditional conservative/Republican values that it makes me boggle.

Are you prepared for socialized medicine?! It scares the dickens out of me to even think about it!!
I think it would be an improvement over the current system.
I think some people confuse socialism and communism. They are NOT the same.

It sounds to me like you have swallowed the fear-mongers' depiction of socialized medicine hook, line and sinker. Many countries have socialized medicine, and their health care is some of the best in the world.

Is that so? I can tell you that coming from Germany where we had what some people might call "socialized medicine" America's health care is FAR inferior.

If you live in America under the current healthcare system you better pray that you remain healthy!!
Just from my own experience with health care recently, struggling with my health care insurance and waiting for appointments. I was told that I had greater than 95 % chance that I have a malignant growth in my breast, despite of that I would have to wait 2 to 4 weeks for a biopsy, not to mention to even get scheduled with a surgeon IF it in fact needs to be removed.

I have called through all doctors that are on my insurance plan. It is only due to a friend's relationship with a surgeon that I finally got scheduled for a biopsy in 1 week.

If it turns out to be breast cancer you can bet that I will get dropped from my insurance and probably won't be able to get health insurance, or if I do my premiums will be unaffordable.

I can tell you that in "socialized medicine country" there were no waiting times for serious cases and a health insurance bureaucrat couldn't turn down treatment that a doctor recommended nor could anyone be dropped from the health insurance due to illness or pre existing conditions. And no one goes bankrupt over medical bills.

So before someone buys into the scare tactics of "socialized health care" make sure you get the whole picture and the truth, not just buzz words.

ITA!! I'm still a registered Republican (although I'm teetering on the edge of libertarianism) and IMHO, (I have no clue if that apostrophe is s'posed to be there, but I'm suddenly very self conscientious about it -- LOL!) McCain lost because he tried too hard to reach out to liberals instead of trying to please the base of the republican party.

 Well, blow me down, lol!!!! I'm glad to hear that you're so pleased! I've heard differently. What else can I say?
