Article that got the scale moving

Good article, and I agree.

When I first found Cathe, back in 2005, I thought, "well, I've busted my butt for an hour, bring on the chocolate cake!!!" Um, yeah, it doesn't work that way. I didn't gain weight, but I sure wasn't losing any at that time, either!!

Also, the only exercise I count, is good, hard exercise. I don't count the walk to the car, the dog walk - unless its far and fast, the schlep up the stairs. And I hit it hard for an hour a day, most days. Any less than that, the weight doesn't budge. And I get ants in my pants from being still.

I hardly ever catch a TV show, thats my workout time, I do have time, just have to make it. Since, I'm not gonna get up at 4 am, I do it when primetime TV is on.

Eating more of something will only help you lose weight if you eat less of something else. More skim milk and less donuts, yes. More skim milk, and the same amount of donuts, no.

And then there's the "happy weight" issue, and I think most of us have a set point where our body is happy at. And food as a social outlet - yup. And our body's instinct to hold on to its stores, I believe that, too. I am always wanting to eat more in the winter - stay warm, hiberate, make it to the next harvest. And less in the summer - its too hot for heavy foods, light cold things are best.

Lots of sense in the article.

Thanks for posting this Terri. #9 puts everything in perspective.

This is not a diet; this is your life.

I just may have use this as my signature line!!

#9 says it all, doesn't it? You have to learn the skills to eat for life, not just a few months. You have to find an activity(ies) that you really enjoy so that you can stay consistent and exercise doesn't feel like such a chore.

#1 was my surprise. I was really bummed when 30 minutes of exercise 4 days a week wouldn't be enough...especially on those brownie days!

#8 is why I really just want to get to a BMI of 24, and could care less what magazines, Hollywood, or what anyone else thinks.

great article

I'm going to print this off to give to patients. Today I discussed nutrition and weight loss with at least 4 women (kinda refreshing after several people freaking out about the H1N1 virus!) who swore that they were very active (but didn't have time to exercise EVER), NEVER ate (at least not anything bad) and just couldn't understand why they hadn't lost a pound. My assignment for the week was for them to log 30 minutes of exercise everyday, hard enough they can't sing but not so hard that they can't talk, and take a picture with their cellphone of EVERYTHING they put in their mouth! I will be interested to see how this turns out...I recommend journaling however most drastically underestimate their portions and overest. their activity. A very intelligent PA in our office summed it up well "you can't get fat on air!" kinda harsh but true! I truly hate it when people ask for a special diet! It should be a lifestyle, not a temporary fix!
thanks for the link!
