anyone try proactiv?

I tried it years ago and it did less than nothing. However, no product that uses salicylic acid works for. I find that benzoyal peroxide is better. It really depends on the person. I know you'll find lots of people who love Proactiv.

I use it and it's done wonders for me. The cleanser does have benzoyal peroxide in it--which can discolor towels if you're not careful.

My only complaint with it is that they send it to me faster than I use it up, so it ends up stockpiling a bit. But the product has been wonderful. I no longer feel like I must put on makeup to leave the house--so freeing!

I've used it twice in my life and (once about 7 years ago and once about one year ago) and it made my skin breakout so badly both times. It was a nightmare. It defintely did not work for me, but it is always worth a shot.

Proactiv uses benzoyl peroxide not salicylic acid. Did you mean it the other way around?

My niece, mother, and I have all used it and swear by it. It definitely does not work on everyone though - doesn't help my other niece at all. I think it depends a lot on what is actually causing the acne -be it hormonal, etc...

Yes! YES!....I should read before I post!:)

Didn't work for me (actually made my acne worse), but I'm not a 16 year old girl, so my opinion of the product is useless in this case. ;) It's certainly worth trying - lots of people have success with it.

I'm 36 and can't go a day without it. I buy it at the mall when I need refills. I WISH I had it at age 16. I tried an Arbonne product and broke out immediately. You have to use as directed and a little goes a long way. I LOVE it and for me it was worth every penny.

That and I stopped touching my face which was really hard but really helped. Try it..I think it has some kind of guarantee with it.

Hello!

I'm 38 yrs. old, I used proactiv about 5 years ago. It worked very well for me for about 1-2 years. After My skin got used to it, it didn't work at all. So, on to something stronger!! Overall, I do think it's worth trying, especially for a teen. People who don't have acne, don't know how AWFUL it is on self esteem, confidence, etc.

Good Luck!!
Cherie

It works great for my daughter. She started using it when she was about 16 and still uses it (she's 20 now).

I really like it! Especially the clay mask! Gives my skin a really nice glow.

Other things that helped is cutting back on animal proteins...which contain a lot of hormones and causes me to break out.

ANOTHER thing that did wonders was I stopped pushing my cardio so hard...which messed up my hormones.

Also, if they send it too often, you can go online, login to your account and revise the shipping. I switched mine from 8 week shipments to 12 week shipments.

I have used Proactiv for several years now and I won't stop. I began when I started having tiny breakouts on my forehead in my mid-twenties and it completely cleared them up. Even now, if I get a single bump, it goes aways quickly with spot treatment. I would definitely say give it a try.

I've been using an acne product that I found on Ebay since 2001. It's called Carley's clear & smooth. It was invented my a chemist who suffered from acne & had teenagers that also suffered. They tried Proactiv but with 3 members of the family using it, it became too expensive to continue to use. The product is named after the inventor's daughter. It's really inexpensive. It's a benzoyl peroxide scrub that is used once a day in the shower. You can follow up with your favorite moisturizer & mild cleaner in the evening. They just came out with a stronger version specifically for teens. They offer a money back guarantee with no quaetions asked & not time limit to try it. They have alot of feedback from ebay users. They don't really sell it that much on ebay anymore due most likely due to the high volume of reorders. The scrub lasts about 4 months & costs $24 including shipping. It's really worth a shot.

I used it for about 3 years and I would say it helped me a little bit. I stopped using it though because my results weren't that great.

In addition to what Sarah suggested about changing the frequency, you can also change the products that you receive. For instance, I needed a new repairing lotion about once a year, but needed cleanser more frequently, so they would let you get 2 cleansers and one toner when a shipment was scheduled to come. I don't know if they still do this, but they did when I used it.

I've battled cystic acne since I was 13 (I'm 30 now), and Proactiv is the only thing that worked for me. I've been using it for 3 years now. My acne was so bad that I didn't have pictures taken at my wedding. How sad is that!?

One thing you HAVE to remember when using this product: your daughter's skin will likely get worse before it gets better. The brochure even says this. It took nearly 4 months of twice daily use before my skin started to clear, and now I never break out, not even right before my period. It's amazing to me. Don't give up on it!!!

Another thing I've heard people say about Proactiv is that it tore their skin up and made their face sore. Well, it does have benzoyl peroxide as the main acne fighter plus exfoliating beads, so you have to play around with whether you can use all three steps twice a day or once a day, or cleanse and clarify twice a day and just use the repairing lotion at night.

If there's one thing I learned in all my years of seeing the dermatologist it's that it's incredibly important to find a good quality oil-free moisturizer. If your daughter's skin starts to get too dry, she will over-produce sebum which causes more acne. Proactiv's moisturizer is really good, but a little pricey. I like good ol' oil-free Oil of Olay Complete.

I hope you have great success!

My 14 year old daughter has been using it the last four months and loves it! She started having really bad acne around 12 years of age. Since using it, I have noticed a GREAT improvement. It did take a few months, however, before we could really tell a big difference. After the first two months, we had seen some improvement, but not great. I called customer service and was going to cancel my order, but the lady talked me out of it saying it takes several months to see good results. I figured they just wanted me to keep buying it, but after four months, my daughter's acne has improvement GREATLY! Every two months they automatically ship a new shipment to us. I would recommend it -- but definitely give it a couple of months for best results!

I want to try it for DS. I do have a bottle of cleanser but want a bottle of toner. Any recommendations for where to buy the toner at a reasonable price?

TIA.

Proactive didn't work so well for my daughter, but she's seen good results with Mario Badescu products. They are reasonably priced (www.mariobadescu.com) and will send you free samples before you buy.

I use it, too, and love it!

Good luck!
Liz
