Anyone interested in continuing our informal book club?

I really enjoyed reading GWTW & being able to discuss it w/you guys, & I was thinking maybe we could keep it going. I have about a week left w/the book I'm reading now, so if anyone's interested, maybe we could do it again. Someone else can choose the book (although I have to warn you I'm not much into modern stuff unless it's a trashy mystery or horror book :p).

Hi there Laura...gee, I've never really participated in a book club before. I think I might want to do someting like this. What did you have in mind to read? deb

Hmmm good question. Last time I chose the book, & someone else should have the chance. Personally I love 19th c. lit like Dickens, Austen, Thackeray, etc. And I can handle some early 20th c. stuff like Wharton, but please no F. Scott Fitzgerald & the like, I find his writing style incredibly irritating & not much fun.

But I'm open to suggestions, & probably I need to broaden my horizons. :)

How about Wharton's The Custom of the Country? I think that's one I haven't read yet, & it looks really fun.

OR, since we did GWTW before, we could do Uncle Tom's Cabin this time around. Haven't read it in about 20 years.

Wharton's sounds good to me! I'm like you, I have about another week left of what I'm currently reading. :D

Ooo! Excuse my butting in but you have got to read The Custom of the Country. Undine Spragg (the main character) is just wonderful - not necessarily in a good way. I read this earlier this year and couldn't believe that I'd missed out on this book before. I will definitely be reading it again some time.

I'll go away and calm down now.

Oh and one more thing, can I recommend Wilkie Collins if you haven't read any of his before and you like 19th century stuff? Some of the best female characters I've come across, particularly for that time.

Right I really will go away now!;)

Alrighty then, Wharton's Custom it is. Shall we set a start date for May 4?

Lori, why can't you join us? You were in on GWTW, weren't you? I loved your posts & insist that you participate.

Ronne, I love your enthusiasm, butt in all you want! I'd never heard of Collins, just checked him on Amazon & I suspect after I finish Wharton & put something light in between, I might have to read some of his stuff. Looks really good. :)

No, I wasn't in on GWTW, but thank you...you're sweet. :)

I do schoolwork most nights, and preparing lessons for 2 kids takes up a decent amount of time. Then I work on Math for myself. Blech. By the time that's done, I'm ready for bed.

Anywho, this explains why I read sporadically. I kind of have to sneak it in, and I'm not always successful. Right now, I'm trying to read 2 books on dog training. Actually, the titles should be "People-Training For Dog Owners."

May 4 works perfect for me! Now I'm all excited since we have confirmation that this is an excellent pick! What is the usual format? Do we read and discuss, or discuss along the way? How have you handled this in the past?

Me too Me too. 19 century literature is my fave. I was going to start Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov, but that can wait. :)

May 4th to begin reading???

Yep, May 4 as a start date. We just read at our own pace & posted our thoughts. There were some who blew through it in a month (not mentioning any names ;), but would never be able to read 1500 pages in a month!).

I'm excited too! :)

Hey I like Wilkie Collins too. I don't run across too many other people who do or who even know who he is!

Edith Wharton is one of my VERY FAVORITE authors. My favorite, favorite is The Age of Innocence. I read Custom of the Country many years ago, and I would enjoy reading it again with all of you! I will anticipate starting on May 4th if that is okay with the group!

FUN!!

Laura, should we have a thread in check-ins? Yeah! This is going to be fun! I can never find anyone to read these kind of books with me!!!

Hey jbliff

Which ones have you read? Last year, I read Armadale and No Name both of which I really enjoyed (hint there for you Laura, when you get round to it :p). They're both flawed but have some of the best female characters I've ever come across.

I'm kicking back at the moment with T is for Trespass (I like to mix the mind-stretching with the popcorn;)).

Ronne,

I've read The Woman in White and the Moonstone. The Moonstone is one of the earliest detective stories ever written. I haven't read either of the books you mentioned so I'll have to look them up.

BTW, I like Kinsey Millhone too!
