Anyone heard of Miracle Noodles?

I don't know the brand but I know about Shirataki Konjac (or Konjac Glucomann) from a seminar in my building (aging research). It's supposed to be some insane fiber. I imagine its not that it's "zero" calories but soooo low and so high in the fibrous content that you basically eat nothing. The fiber is supposed to be really good to incorporate into your diet -- insulin and cholesterol levels showed improvement I think...but that was a while ago so I might be mixing it up.

Miracle noodles huh? hm. I never even heard of them until this very moment :) Per the internet Trader Joe's carries them, so, I say let's give it a go! Who's in?

Oops, I forgot to mention that I already did try these noodles. I was just wondering if any of you heard of them to get your take on them.

I ordered them online after my friend told me about them and wow I wasn't at all prepared for the odor of the liquid they are packed in. Very fishy but after a LONG rinse it was ok. I don't think I've yet prepared these noodles to bring out their potential. I'm finding they do better prepared as an Asian noodle vs the traditional pasta noodle I am used to for spaghetti.

I am determined to get it right with these noodles so any recipe ideas are welcome :)

ooh, now i'm a bit scared. But maybe i'll try it anyway. Looks like there are recipes online... even some for desserts that use the noodles (seems really weird!)

Cathe, i'll just block my nose while they rinse... thanks for the heads up:p

Hi Cathe,

Oh yeah, I've tried them! I too nearly passed out when I opened the package and thought they were spoiled because of that mega-fishy odor! I bought another package, rinsed them for what seemed like forever, tried to make a stir-fry but couldn't get past the flavor or texture. Yuck!! If you have success with a recipe using the noodles, I'd love to see it!

Good luck!
Pam

I ordered a whole case of them with a variety of pastas. My mistake was ordering a whole case. I am not normally picky but I just couldn't get past the smell either & I like fish. I ended up giving mine away. (DeniseG on the RT's loves them! Maybe I'll contact her because she has all types of recipes she's tried.). Good Luck Cathe, hope you like them after you try a few recipes.

Sounds interesting, but what do they actually taste like once you've rinsed them? Do they even have any flavor or are they like tofu and pick up the flavor of the food you cook them with?

I bought some awhile back. I think they were the same... They were Shirataki noodles. They were packed in liquid, and I couldn't get past that ick factor. I mean, I'm an Italian gal; I like my noodles al dente... How in the world can a soggy noodle packed in liquid be any good? Not mention fishy, smelly liquid. Eww.

IMO -- Just eat pasta. Nothing beats wheat pasta and a nice marinara primavera. :) Life's too short. Just eat the real thing! Everything in moderation is my motto. :p

I hadn't heard of, or tried, these, but the 'fishy smell' makes me wonder if they are made from some kind of seaweed?

Something perhaps similar (but which doesn't have an obnoxious fishy smell) is kelp noodles. I've tried those. They are very low calorie, don't have any flavor of their own, and absorb the flavor of whatever sauce they are used with. They need to be rinsed and soaked for a while (or marinated, or cooked, but most eat them raw to soften a bit).

(I wouldn't say they are 'just like spaghetti", though!)

I haven't tried the Mircale noodles, but a few years ago I did try the Tofu Shirataki noodles. I just couldn't get past the smell or the texture, but I only tried them a couple times.

Girls have a wonderfull week end:eek::eek::eek:

Kathryn,

How is the texture of the Kelp noodles and where on earth did you find them?

Pam
They can be a bit chewy, but are softer with longer soaking.
Similar to al al dente noodle.

They are available from several raw-food sites (and maybe some Japanese food stores). I posted a link in my last post.
