Any of you CLEAN eaters

I've been lurking (and posting a few questions/comments) over the past few days, and I must say, I'm very impressed with results some o fyou have experienced with your Cathe workouts (in combo with other workouts, running, kickboxing, etc.

My question is...how many of you are clean eaters?? I'm asking because I noticed that Cathe says she tries to eat healthy, but does not obssess and does not offer nutrituional advice. And sometimes you'll hear that a person got phenominal results doing a particular workout, only to find out they only ate chicken breasts and lettuce leaves for a whole month! :7

So what are some of your diets like? Care to share?

Many of the posters on this forum are clean eaters. I admire them SO much.
I, myself, strive to eat clean, but am less than halfway there.

Hi!

Chicken breast and lettuce leaves.. I definetely would not survive.
I eat everything in moderation. I am trying to cut back on my sweets a little right now. I know I could never live completely without them though.

Your post made me giggle when you had the chicken and lettuce comment.. :D

Have a great day!!

It's so true...you see someone that is fit and firm and you ask them..."so what do you eat for lunch?" "salad and a protein shake". "and dinner?" "salad and a protein shake". "and breakfast...let me guess, salad and a protein shake?" "no, i switch it up...oatmeal and a protein shake." HILARIOUS!

I try to eat healthy too...limit my starches and sweets, get protein at every meal, but i try not to sweat it too much. I have a few extra winter pounds that I want to lose, so I know I'm going to have get a little strict, but overall, i dont' want to count calories every day of my life!

So, how often do you run? I ran a marathon back in '01, and haven't managed to get back into a running groove since. My goal is to get back in shape to run 10Ks on a more regular basis.

I try to eat as cleanly as I can MOST of the time. I find that if I am too strict about what I put in my mouth, I fall off the clean eating bandwagon hard, fast and often. I make sure to have protein with every meal and to drink lots of water during the day. I avoid pasta and rice, and when I can't, I eat only limited portions. I do eat bread, but only whole wheat and only a slice in a meal. I make sure to eat several servings of fruits and vegetables throughout the day. There are days when I eat Doritos, chocolate cake, dimsum, and all those goodies I shouldn't really be indulging in. I just start over the day after.

I eat vegan all the time, and whole foods most of the time. I try to avoid processed foods as much as possible. I don't drink soft drinks (except an occasional health food store version of root beer or cola) and rarely eat out (though if there were whole-food, vegan dining choices available where I am, I probably would) and pack my own lunch. I'd say my diet is about 80-85% clean.

I'm probably not a clean eater, although I like to think I'm a healthy eater. Since the beginning of the year I've made a conscious effort to eat 4-7 fruits and vegatables a day. I've been pleased, because I think I'm averaging 5 or 6. I started out a little heavier towards fruit, but I think it's pretty even now. Most days, my snacks are fruits, veggies or a handful of nuts. Usually I have cereal with vanilla Silk soy milk and cranberries added in the morning (I've been eating Kashi cereals lately, trying for the ones higher in fiber and protein), with water or oj or more milk to drink. Then I have a piece of fruit and some green tea after I get to work (I've substituted the tea for soda, and have found that it was the caffeine and not the taste of the soda that I was craving). I might have a handful of nuts for a second morning snack, then a Lean Cuisine or other similar type meal for lunch, with carrot sticks or celery stick. Then one or two pieces of fruits in the afternoon and another cup of green tea. For dinner, I just eat a balanced meal, and then have a bowl of fruit or a glass or milk or soy milk shortly before bed. I've lost about four pounds since the beginning of the year. Early in the year, I was doing a rotation with the timesavers and boot camp, then I was sick for a little over a month and only did pilates. I just started back with Cathe last weekend.

BTW, if I want something like chocolate, I try to limit it to just a small amount, say one or two squares of a Dove candy bar. I did have a whole Hershey bar the other day though. It was good, but I don't feel the need to do that very often! Also, sometimes on the weekend I'll have waffles or pancakes with bacon and eggs, mmmmmm.

I eat what I consider clean about 90% of the time if not more. The only meats I eat are poultry and seafood. I eat foods in their most natural state possible. I avoid all trans fats (hydrogenated oils) and GMOs (genetically modified organisms). I eat free-range chicken egg whites. Organic milk (hormone and antibiotic free). I eat whole grains...bread, pasta, crackers, kashi cereal. I do not eat aspartame (nutrasweet). No sodas. Very little alcohol. Very little white stuff (flour, sugar, potatoes, rice).

About the worst thing process wise I haven't given up is no sugar added frozen yogart with Splenda. If that kills me then oh well I'll die happy. ;-) I do eat a very wide variety of food. Love fruits and vegetables. And I do believe you can enjoy most things in moderation without doing too much damage if you are careful. The only thing I wouldn't eat even in moderation is trans fats. They are evil!

My diet is mostly clean. I eat organic whole grains and do a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet until dinner when I have to feed my carnivores and then I eat what they eat although I often sub whole wheat pasta or whole wheat tortillas for the white ones they insist upon. I will occasionally have lean chicken or tuna for lunch. I do use butter, whole fat sour cream and cheese but in very small portions. I tend to eat dark chocolate most evenings, also in small portions but I skip it if I think I've eaten too much during the day. I eat plenty of vegetables and fruit, avoid added sugar and trans-fats for the most part. I read ingredient labels carefully, particularly if I shop the regular supermarket, because a lot of foods that claim to be healthy are loaded with unnecessary, very icky things. The fewer the ingredients the better. I eat nuts, salmon, avacados, beans and yams several times a week. Nuts daily. I eat tofu, organic yogurt (Stoneyfield farms) and buy humanely raised beef and chicken at Wild Oats. I use dairy products that have no bovine growth hormone or antibiotics. I agree that trans fats are evil but I do use Boca breakfast links and patties which contain them because I found the canola oil ones to be unpalatable and the total is less than 2% of the makeup of the link. I eat them a couple of times a week. I sweeten with honey when I sweeten and use a bit of maple syrup on waffles and pancakes, about a Tbs. I agree it's all about moderation but I've found that I just don't desire true junk food when I eat the healthily in the first place. :)

Neither do I. It's hard going back to clean eating the first week after I've stuffed myself with junk, but if I get through that first week -- even just the first three or four days -- it somehow gets easier. There's a lot of chocolate, cookies and chips in our pantry. I haven't touched them or craved for them at all.

I eat pretty clean, but there are some serious exceptions. Diet Coke is a biggie. No matter how much I try, I find myself sneaking back to it. But I drink a lot more water now than Diet Coke, which is better than it used to be! My other big exception is Healthy Choice ice cream. It has about 100 ingredients, but sometimes I just have to have it. But nowadays I often opt for fruit instead. The organic red anjou pears they are selling at my health food store are just to die for this year, and they make it easier to avoid the ice cream.

Editing to confess that I'm counting Orville Redenbacher's low-fat popcorn as clean because it has only two ingredients: corn and oil. But maybe I'm in denial?

Is the oil "partially hydrogenated", which is usually the case with microwave popcorn. If so, it's definitely NOT healthy. If not, then I think you can count it as clean.

I eat about 90% clean during the week. About 50% clean on the weekends. SO I guess that gives me about a 70% average.

I love chicken and lettuce leaf salads but I add some grape tomatoes, too. No kidding, I am very lucky to love vegetables and fruits and chicken and fish and nuts and all the stuff that is supposed to be good for you.

These days I can walk away from chocolate very easily. I still struggle when passing the frozen foods ice cream isle, though.

I am with you Candi. We never really had much candy around the house, so I grew up to favor a bowl of fruit salad or cantelope over
a peice of chocolate. Im the same way now and am glad. I didnt have to ween myself off of much at all. I cut back on the soda a while ago and switched to water even before i started working out. I pretty much cut back all the processed and fried foods. My whole diet was fried, fried, fried. Now, I bring all my food to work. Nuts, grains, protein, fruit, veges, and lots of water. I do splurge on the weekends though sometimes. You have to. I think I would go crazy once in a while if I didnt have things I enjoyed. As long as I know I am a general healthy eater its okay.

I eat "clean" for the most part every day except for one meal on Sat. My meals consist of 5 each day which are:

Meal 1: 2 egg white omelet + 1/3 c oatmeal w/blueberries + coffee
Meal 2: 1/2 sweet potato + fish
Meal 3: brown rice/chicken/broccoli + cauliflower + peach
Meal 4: spinach salad + either chicken or fish
Meal 5: green beans + chicken or turkey or fish

These meals are for low-carb days which are 5 days & then I eat high-carb for the other 2 days. HTH, Kathy:D

Do you date much? You MUST be single, no matter what your age. In today's society it would be tough to have those restrictions unless someone is on the exact same diet.

I'm amazed that anyone would think that this kind of question or delving into my private life is any of their business..only on the internet, I guess.:(

Yeah, the popcorn oil is mostly trans-fatty acids. But since the whole bag has only 4 grams of fat, I choose it over the popcorn that advertises as having no trans-fatty acids but has lots of fat. I can't wait for them to make a low-fat version of the healthy stuff.

My main source of fat is the oil in salad dressings which I have twice per day, along with the fat in the salmon and chicken that I eat, and I'm not supposed to have any other significant sources of fat during the day.

That's not very kind, Cathemade. These forums are given to us so that we can exchange positive ideas, thoughts and fitness tips. "Today's society" is made up of many people who are different, live different lifestyles, etc... I know plenty of vegans and I sit down at the dinner table with them quite often. I think that it's fun to try new things.
