I would have found it unfathomable if HBO's Little Britain USA had not turned out be a HUMONGOUS HIT in USA. I am absolutely atonished that it doesnt even seem well-known. Granted the US season was not as good as the original UK efforts (3 seasons and a few specials for Charity / Xmas). But I still found it side-splitting.
It is my most favorite funny TV show of all time. I can watch it every day.
For the uninitiated, it is a sketch show where two very talented actors play all the roles. It pokes fun at human prejudices, double standards and phobias. Sometimes it is just surreal fun that doesnt take a potshot. It takes irreverence and lack of respect for boundaries of what can be depicted on TV to heights rarely scaled. Almost every line in the script is a gem. Just in case the description so far doesnt say so, "not for the easily offended" does not even begin to describe it. More like "exclusively for the absolutely unoffendable".
Daffyd and Andy Pipkin (recurring characters on the sketch show) are among my most favorite people - as dear as "real" friends. Just a passing memory of Daffyd's costumes or any Andyism can lift my mood several notches.
Any other fans?
My other favorite funny people are the Marx Brothers and Sacha Cohen Baron (of the Ali G Show fame - I felt Borat the movie was his least funny piece of work). The UK show Coupling scores high on my list. Anyone who works in information technology should catch "The IT Show". I like the way Brits do humor more than any other culture. My favorite authors (funny or even in general) are Wodehouse and Roald Dahl. Of US shows, I like Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Big Bang Theory. Any suggestions of shows or movies to catch, or books to read that find parallels are very welcome.
This last para is just for Little Britain fans. My friend was in a New York Metro train when he overheard two people talking about the Little Britain Show. This was well before Little Britain USA, so the odds of fnding a co-fan were slim. When his station arrived he walked past them and said "But I am the only gay in the village." They broke into huge smiles. Pat came the response from one of them "Computer says 'No'".
