Any Little Britain Fans in Catheland?

I would have found it unfathomable if HBO's Little Britain USA had not turned out be a HUMONGOUS HIT in USA. I am absolutely atonished that it doesnt even seem well-known. Granted the US season was not as good as the original UK efforts (3 seasons and a few specials for Charity / Xmas). But I still found it side-splitting.

It is my most favorite funny TV show of all time. I can watch it every day.

For the uninitiated, it is a sketch show where two very talented actors play all the roles. It pokes fun at human prejudices, double standards and phobias. Sometimes it is just surreal fun that doesnt take a potshot. It takes irreverence and lack of respect for boundaries of what can be depicted on TV to heights rarely scaled. Almost every line in the script is a gem. Just in case the description so far doesnt say so, "not for the easily offended" does not even begin to describe it. More like "exclusively for the absolutely unoffendable".

Daffyd and Andy Pipkin (recurring characters on the sketch show) are among my most favorite people - as dear as "real" friends. Just a passing memory of Daffyd's costumes or any Andyism can lift my mood several notches.

Any other fans?

My other favorite funny people are the Marx Brothers and Sacha Cohen Baron (of the Ali G Show fame - I felt Borat the movie was his least funny piece of work). The UK show Coupling scores high on my list. Anyone who works in information technology should catch "The IT Show". I like the way Brits do humor more than any other culture. My favorite authors (funny or even in general) are Wodehouse and Roald Dahl. Of US shows, I like Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Big Bang Theory. Any suggestions of shows or movies to catch, or books to read that find parallels are very welcome.

This last para is just for Little Britain fans. My friend was in a New York Metro train when he overheard two people talking about the Little Britain Show. This was well before Little Britain USA, so the odds of fnding a co-fan were slim. When his station arrived he walked past them and said "But I am the only gay in the village." They broke into huge smiles. Pat came the response from one of them "Computer says 'No'".

I loved Little Britain USA! I dvred all the episodes, will it be on again?! I hope so!

I read that HBO has commissioned a new Season. Matt Lucas and David Walliams were scripting at the time of the article. Not sure exactly how long ago this was.

You absolutely must watch the UK seasons and the UK specials. They were even better. They were broadcast on BBC America and may still be on air.

I will have to find this series! I love Coupling, did you watch British Men Behaving Badly? Another favorite, although the second season was much better than the first. How about Father Ted? That one just kills me! I agree British humor is very good. I used to have BBC America, but I cut out digital cable, so now I have to wait for things to get to DVD. I'll see if my video store has the UK versions of Little Britain.

And, of course, I own all of Absolutely Fabulous. Those two are so outrageous. My favorite line from the whole series? (said to her daughter) "Well, okay, you can come to Morocco with us, but as your mother I cannot be held responsible for your well being!"

Thanks for starting this thread, Vee!

Anne,

Father Ted and Ab Fab are priceless! I havent watched the Brit version of Men Behaving Badly. I must try to get it. I thought the UK version of Office was way better. Ricky Gervais of Office went on to make a show called "Extras" which was excellent too.

Did you watch Ghost Town with Ricky Gervais and Tea Leoni? I found it
one of the better rom-coms. Most rom-coms have too much of the former and not enough of the latter. This one was funny. It has Greg Kinnear in it too and the chemisty between Kinnear and Gervais is excellent.

IAnother good brit sitcom is "Keeping Up Appearances". I cant resist anything that has Rowan Atkinson in it either.

From the first episode of Coupling:

Man: I want to break up. It isnt working anymore.
Woman: I refuse.
Man: What do you mean refuse...You cant refuse!
Woman: You mean that after all this time together I dont get a say?
Man: Er...Yes.
Woman: Well then, I refuse!

This doesnt sound so funny as a script when I type it. I'm spoiling the effect!

Thank you for the recommendation. :)

I also have the Absolutely Fabulous box set and the Young Ones both great shows although I have to admit Patsy and Eddie will always be my favorites . But British comedy Rocks! :)

I watched Ghost Town just the other night! It was great! I love dark comedy. I also watched Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels recently. I never saw it when it came out. I forgot about the Young Ones, they were great!

And, Vee, I know just the exchange you're talking about in Coupling. That was hilarious! And, yes, the Brit version of Men Behaving Badly is priceless. As I said, the first season wasn't as good, but the second season will have you howling.

And what about Mulberry? Does anybody here know that one? It's older (from the early 80's, I think), but it's great. It has the woman who played Miss Marple a lot--Geraldine McEwan, I think. Does that sound right?

Now I must go review my DVD collection...
