My 33-year old nephew was being treated for a "virus" that wouldn't go away. Then he got pneumonia and all of a sudden his legs started swelling and he was deteriorating quickly. Although he is in a serious relationship, his parents (my in-laws) took him to the hospital last Wednesday evening.
The next 24 hours the news we got kept getting worse and worse. As it stands now, this "virus" has attacked his heart, kidney and liver. They have his kidney and liver somewhat stabilized now but the heart is not functioning and they do not expect it to. He is being kept alive right now by 2 pumps and a respirator.
The first 36 hours in ICU he kept forming clots and they had to do a couple of surgeries to remove them. One was in the upper part of the leg and my in-laws had to give permission (he has been unconscious since Thursday) to not only operate, but if there was too much damage due to blood not getting to his left leg, they had to give permission to amputate if needed. Luckily, they found a way to get the blood to the leg.
Today he was evaluated for a heart transplant. They will find out tomorrow whether or not he has been accepted. If he is, he will move to the top of the list because of the condition of his heart. If he is not approved for a transplant, they will make him as comfortable as possible for the short time he could sustain life on these pumps.
As you can imagine, they are just zombies right now. Because he is unconscious, they have to make all of the decisions for him.
My SIL just buried her mother 3 1/2 weeks ago and now this.
