Am I unreasonable?

You guys are too funny... or is that TO funny -- LOL!!

I often do a Google search when I have a question about which word/spelling to use. For instance, you can use to or too for your search criteria and it will return a ton of grammar sites.

BTW, I'm aware that my grammar skills are lacking, but give me a break -- I'm a nurse and we were trained to abbreviate everything. :p :D

So go ahead, make fun of me -- see if I care! :p :p :p

Nope, I am a complete freak about that, especially when you work for someone who makes the big bucks. I have several, several examples but one that sticks out is when someone says "supposeBly" instead of "supposedly". I hear this everywhere! UGGGGGHHHHH!

Clarissa

This one drives me nuts. I have heard Barbara Walters utter "supposeBly" on The View and she is a "journalist?"

LOL!!!!

Oh, it's like nails on a chalkboard. I've never fully understood how highly intelligent, educated people can make 4th grade grammatical errors... Although I catch some of my best friends doing it often (with a silent "T", ha!) and I still love them anyway! :p

Nancy:

No, you are not. Your paralegal drafts documents which represent you and the company where you are employed. They are obliged to be completely professional and represent you in the best possible light. Bad spelling and appalling grammar are unacceptable because they make you look bad and incompetent.

He either improves and proof reads his own work, or you give him a first warning. You are not there to do his job for him.

Clare

Eats, shoots, and leaves!

I've worked as an editor for more than 20 years, and these errors drive me insane! When you communicate at work, you should be as accurate as possible. People draw unflattering conclusions about you based on these basic mistakes! (Didn't they teach this stuff in elementary school?)

I should also point out that any editor worth his or her salt (notice I didn't say "their") has a desk full of reference books -- and uses them!

Okay, I'm getting off my soapbox. Thank you for listening!

Miss Lee: I overlook typos in posts. After all, we're in a hurry, it's a casual forum, we do the best that we can. But at work ... you're getting paid to get it right!

Now I'm scared to death to post anything! You all know I have spelling issues. I sure hope my grammer isn't as bad. I'm always afraid my participles are dangling.

Robin, see post above yours!

Forum is one thing. Work is another. Don't worry about it! You're not getting paid to post! :D

No, that stuff drives me nuts too. Some people use "our" for "are" too, and I hate "irregardless".....it's an entire universe of madness I tell you.

Has anyone ever noticed someone saying something is for "sell"? Will "sale" it (yes, I've actually seen this on display before) for x amount of dollars.

It also drives me nuts. I have an English degree (just a B.A.) and I grew up with an English professor mother. Pet peeves are blatant misuse of apostrophes and the it's/its pair. I also really hate the phrase "Not hardly" which is a double negative. I read Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta novels and yell at the book when Kay Scarpetta (who has a law degree in addition to being a medical examiner) says "Not hardly". Argh!

I agree that it's one thing on the forums and another on the job. Oh, and this may be unrelated, but I ABHOR those AXA commercials with the 800-lb gorilla. The cliche is about ignoring the elephant in the room, not the 800-lb gorilla. The gorilla cliche is, "Where does an 800-lb gorilla sit? Anywhere he wants." Those are completely separate expressions. Am I right?

What really drives me nuts is when I catch myself making silly mistakes. I am just glad we can edit posts here. ;)

This makes me insane! Not to mention, it's often executives making these errors. UGH.
I have a customer who consistently asks me about the status of his "kit's." I have corrected him several times (since he is copying his VP on emails.) 2 years later, he's still doing it. I just laugh at him now. What a dolt.

Maybe he's doing it just to get under your skin :p Seriously, I know some people who would do that.

I might think that Catherine if he truly wasn't um...challenged...is that a nice way to put it? It's one thing to get under my skin but when you're copying the people you report up to & doing the same thing, I just think that's dumb...hahaha sorry...

I see what you are saying. Sounds like he'll never learn

Interesting thread....

..... ITA with all the responses........ I s'pose that makes me unreasonable also........ ;)

And how about those quotation marks?

I "hate" it when "certain" people (MIL) use "lots" of quotations marks to "emphasize" something!

Drives me crazy! I think it also bothered me that for years I fixed the mistakes of my bosses (and their bosses) ... people way above me who made much more than I did.

That's okay -- I'm my own boss now and nobody would pay me as well as I pay myself! (I "really" mean it!!!!!!)

Don't we all love those extra exclamation points? And Lainiefig, I agree: What is so hard about its/it's (its = possessive; it's = it is)? You'd think it was the mystery of the universe.

Gosh, I love this thread! I don't remember the last time I got this worked up over something!

I just thanked my paralegal for something and he wrote back "your welcome". He also writes things like "their coming in tomorrow". It drives me nuts some days. Gosh, when I worked for bosses, I used to check and double check everything I gave them. Now I'm the boss, and frankly, I expect the same. Am I being unreasonable?

Sometimes, I read some of the crumpled up trash the school kids throw onto my lawn and I just stand there and think "What???" I wonder if any of my neighbors critique the trash on their lawns!

I was going to write "they're lawns..." but I didn't want to drive you over the edge. He he he. Seriously though, that WOULD drive me nuts.

That kind of thing bugs me too, Nancy, you are not unreasonable. I am also bothered by random capitalization of nouns and the words "utilize/utilized." Just say "use" or "used." :D

Sparrow

Oh my God, if there's one word I despise it's "utilize." Just say "use." It's so much cheaper.
