Age ain't got nuthin to do with it!!!

I've been reading several threads lately that blame age for weight gain or the inablility to lose. I'm here to tell you that age ain't got nuthin to do with it! I'm 53 and lost 20 pounds over about a two month time frame. The trick was to stop fooling myself and start seriously watching what I ate. Yes, exercise helped, but it was the 1500-1600 calorie/day diet (with a cheat day every week or so) that made all the difference. Stop using age as an excuse! That dawg don't hunt.

Yeah, I hear ya... but I looked at the diet you're on and there's NO WAY I could ever follow it. Not to be contentious :p, but I'm not going to eat rice cakes or drink shakes made with those icky crap-filled protein powders. Sure, I could drop my calories that low and still eat foods that I enjoy, but I have never benefited from counting calories. In fact, that has always backfired on me. It makes me focus on food so much that all I can think about is eating. Different strokes... ;)

ETA that I am VERY HAPPY for you!!! :D

Hey I am the same way and I love food to much to have a constant and daily battle with it. I would be way to obsessive and my kids would call me the mommie beast if I counted my calories. Not that I have blamed my age for anything, I'm 33 and 33 is the new 20 as 50 is the new 40 but isn't it true that your metabolism slows down the older you get making it a little harder to lose weight? I coulda swore I read that somewhere.

Congrats Robin! OMG you must feel fabulous!

I do, however, disagree about the age thing. I went to bed one night when I was 39 & weighed 115, I woke up the next day & I was 40 & weighed 125. I mean seriously, it happened almost overnight.

Not saying it can't be done, just saying it is tougher as you get older.

I agree with you, Miss Lee. Counting calories makes me hungry all the time, hearing the word diet makes me think about food that I shouldn't be eating. I like that I don't have to count calories anymore and I won't touch another protein shake in my lifetime :p

I am really happy for you, Robin. I heard similar comments when I wanted to lose weight, that it can't be done after 40. Yeah, right! YOU GO GIRL!!!!

If I don't count calories I'm in big trouble. I don't obsess about it, just doing what I have to, to make life good/healthy and happy. For me there is no other way. I love protein shakes after a great workout. They are homemade so I know what is in them. I'm 58 and yes, it takes longer to lose for me at this age. I just say to myself "So What?" and keep going. It is what it is.

*nods* Right.

It's not that once we turn 40, we fall apart and can't do a thing to help ourselves. Of course you can lose weight at any age.

However, I cannot eat and workout like I did when I was 25 and still get the same results. That's what I mean when I refer to age.

What a great way to put it Robin! :D
Yes, that is a great way to put it :D. And I just want to go on record as saying that I don't believe age is an excuse for failing to lose weight, although the older you are the harder it can be once your metabolism slows. I would definitely argue the point that dieting has never been shown to be a successful mechanism for maintaining weight loss. It's not about a "diet", it's ALL about lifestyle! You have to make permanent changes in your lifestyle if you want to maintain a healthy weight!

Wow..... I don't know what to think... I asked about losing weight in a thread...maybe... I should have keep it to myself.

Michele, I agree that dieting is no answer and yes eating healthfully is a lifestyle. I think that every body reacts differently and so needs that special attention to make a difference. For me it's not a diet, but I do have to watch what I eat and write down the calories I ingest in order to make my goal happen. It is not a diet, it's my lifestyle. ;) Just my opinion that works for me.:)

Sidney, it's OK, just a difference of opinion. That's good. It makes people think.

Take care and have a great day.

Why is there any need to feel that way? The take home message of Robin's post is that it is simply hard work but it can be done but as they say, the only place success comes before sweat is in the dictionary.
