Achey joints - not DOMS

Hi Cathe / anyone else who can help,
Yesterday I did STS Meso 3 chest and back - for the second time, as I'm doing a 6 month rotation. I pushed myself, and felt fine doing it. I ate lunch within an hour of finishing, and drank loads of water. Then, suddenly, I got 'flu-like symptoms. I went very, very cold, but felt flushed. All my joints ached -especially my shoulders, and I had to go to bed for the rest of the day. Over the next 24 hours I drank over 6 litres of water - I was very thirsty. I'm no longer achey, just tired.
Could this be from training? Or is it just a coincidence?
I did google 'flu and overtraining, but the articles seem to suggest that overdoing it leads to a weakened immune systom, which in turns means a preponderance to illness. Mine felt more like the aches were a symptom of the workout.
Anyone else had this????
Guess I won't be tackling To The Max today.....
Many thanks,
Justine

Sorry to hear it, Justine.
I haven't experienced that in particular but to me it sounds exactly what you said; working out hard taxes the body and it certainly can weaken your immune system. I wonder if extra nutrients and extra sleep when you're working out that hard would help.
Good luck!

Justine:

I went through exactly these symptoms two weeks ago. I have not been able to exercise for over a month now due to an excess of workload and family commitments. However, I had all these symptoms. They did not develop into a cold as I thought they would, so I cna ony surmise that for me, it was all a physical symptom of my stress load: achy joints, shoulder pain and tension, neck aches, excessive languour and tiredness throughout my whole body.

Yours could be over-training, could be over-stressing or just the body telling you that all of it is too much right now!

Couple of days off, loads of sleep(as you instinctively did) and great nutrition, with perhaps the odd movie and glass of wine could see you to rights again.

Clare

Thank you Clare - it's reassuring to hear someone else has been through the same. I think I'll have to take a break from STS, even though I'm loath to do so.
I particularly like the idea of movies and wine!
How are you now? Are you fully recovered? Has your workload eased off?
Here's to kowing when to take a break

Hi, maybe if you drink à protein shake before and after workouts help you, thats help to me on cardio days I drink after cardio.

Hi Justine! It can be that you were getting ready to come down with something and that last workout just pushed you over the edge or it could be that your body is dropping loud hints that it needs a rest day (or two) sooner than is scripted in the program. Perhaps it's something related to that time of month (or ovulation) occurring, or just not being dressed warm enough for the weather of the day. You also could be low on sleep, stressed about something or on too low of a calorie diet. So many things affect how we feel on a day to day basis and we need to listen to our body's and give it what it needs (unless its being silly and demanding cheese burgers and a shake, lol) so that it performs optimally for us in the long run. Some helpful hints are to always shoot for 8 hours of sleep, 10 full glasses of water a day (more if its extra hot or you've sweated a lot), healthy food intake, and a stretch workout once or more a week. Also pay attention to food allergies as eating wrong foods can cause inflammation in the joints. Be careful of high levels of sun exposure as sun exposure weakens the immune system too. Just some things to keep in mind :)

Thank you Cathe, and everyone else, for your replies. I think Cathe hit the nail on the head when she said that I was, perhaps, coming down with something, and the tough workout tipped the balance. I had a 3 day virus - and the rest of the village where I live have, one by one, succumbed to it. I'm back on track now. :D
