?? about "eating clean"

Hi Cathe or Educated Crowd,

I've recently been trying really hard to clean up my eating, so that I can get some nice definition. I am doing good so far and have lost twelve pounds recently, but I have a couple of questions.

When you say "no sugar" does the small amount in say a light soymilk or a small amount of honey in flour free bread matter? Also when eating "no sugar" what about honey, maple syrup, molasses, etc. are they all no-no's? And are fruits like raisens or fresh dates not good because of the sugar?

And finally, are cereals like the Kashi Go Lean okay? It seems to be flour less and whole grain?

Thanks for the help!

Hi Linda,

I will try my best to answer your questions based on my own exeriences.

First of all, congratuations in your twelve pound weight loss. This is outstanding! :)

If you are still trying to lose weight, I would hold off on consuming honey, maple syrup, molasses, etc. I instead would sweeten foods with Stevia. This natural sweetener doesn't impact your sugar levels as honey does.

Raisens are higher on the Glycemic Index (GI) meaning that it has higher levels of sugar than, say, an apple. I would stick with lower GI fruits such as apples, oranges, grapefruit, peaches, nectarines, strawberries, blueberries, and other berries.

For cereal, I suggest a sprouted grain cereal that contains no refined sugars or preservatives. If you like Grape Nuts, you will like Food for Life's Ezekiel sprouted grain Cereal. I buy this at Whole Foods. Inforamtion about this cereal is available at http://foodforlife.com/. Select Cereals under the Products tab at the top of the page. This company also sells flourless pasta and breads; both are really tasty!

Hope this helps.

Hi Lorrayne,

Thanks for responding! I guess I should switch to the unsweetened soymilk.

I don't know if my goal is to lose more weight or just really lean out or are those the same thing? But once I reach my goal, its okay to use small amount of natural sweetners?

Also, I love Grape Nuts, so I will definitely try to find the Food for Life cereal. I don't know if my local health food store carries it and the nearest Whole Foods is an hour away!

Thanks for the help!

Whole Foods also sells Westsoy unsweetened vanilla soymilk, it is the only soymilk I've found with natural vanilla flavoring AND no sugar!
I also like shredded wheat - only one ingredient! Very natural.
