A question about working out to "exhaustion"

How would you describe a muscle worked out to exhaustion. Is it when you cannot do anymore or is when you have worked it out so much that you feel it becoming a bit wobbly? I have been confused on this for years and I am finally brave enough to ask!

RE: A question about working out to

Hi Tallchick,

The definition I have always used is that muscle exhaustion is reached when you can no longer complete a rep with good form. That may mean the muscle simply won't move anymore, or it might be so wobbly that you can go part way but not all the way without relying on other muscles to get you there.

RE: A question about working out to

Exccept that with lower body work, it is possible to have the shakes in the legs and still complete all the reps with good form, through sheer determination, as we do on the slow-mo lunges on Gym Style legs and as Cathe says on LL, "legs are shakin' like a chihuahua".

So in this instance the wobbles preceed failure but are an indication of you working at your muscles' limits.

RE: A question about working out to

Thank you. I am going to have to study more on my own exhaustion. Sometimes I think I am more exhausted from my lungs and not my legs. When doing lunges, sometimes my calf muscle gets tight and I have to stretch it in mid workout. I will put on my 25 pound dumbells and get to work now, well, later, that is.

Hi Tallchick! Stebby is correct in her reply. I will add that it is when you have given it your final safest, effective, maximal effort.
