80lb barbell set (Intensity Series) $20+$4 S/H

Thank - you so much for the info. I was just thinking of posting a question similar. I only have dumbbells now and use them for all of Cathe's tapes. They seem to work fine, but, I was wondering if I would get a better workout/better positioning etc if I used a barbell where Cathe uses a barbell?? If so I think I will order this set. Would you happen to know if the bar is 15lbs? What are the 4 LB heavy - duty 2piece? And the weights that I would also need include 5lbs and 2.5 lbs. Would I be able to get the plates at Walmart and they would fit?? Thanks for any info you could give me.

I usually use my barbell (not this set, I have Troy Lite which is more expensive) for my lower body. I find that as I progress, I need heavier weights, and a barbell is easier/stable than holding dumbells in your hands. I like some upper body exercises with barbells. Somehow, I do not like barbells for my biceps/triceps... I always go for the dumbells for those (just a personal choice).

I really do not know the weight of this barbell. But from the description, my guess is 4 lbs and split into 2 parts (you probably have to screw those together). I doubt you need more than 80lbs... but I understand you do need smaller weights. FYI, barbells comes in 2 sizes -- 1" (standard) diameter and 2" (olympic) diameter. I assume these are 1". If so, standard plates would work with the barbell.

Hi,

I just posted a question about the Troy Lite barbell over in the Ask Cathe forum. She had recommended it in response to a question from someone who was having similar issues that I am with my Firm padded barbell (I think the padding is making it tougher to grip once you add heavy weights). Anyway, I went to the Troy website via the link on Cathe's homepage, but I found it pretty confusing. I don't think I'm finding this Troy Lite barbell. Could you tell me a little more about it? How long is it? How much does it weigh by itself? How do the plates attach (screws, clips)? Did you buy it on their website or from a store?

Sorry for all the questions !

Thanks for your help! :)

Hi Marie,

I found the Troy site confusing as well. I heard from others that this set is available at www.fitness1st.com. I requested the written catalog and here's the info. I remember.

The bar weighs 5 pounds and is 54 inches long. It comes with plates (2 7.5 plates, 4 5 pounds plates, 4 2. 5 lb plates, something like that) and the plates are secured with spring collars. They a set or all the components individually so you could create your own set. Like I said, I got the catalog from the Fitness First website listed above. I think you could order it on line or via the written catalog. Not sure what shipping would cost.

HTH,

Hi, Sabine--

Thank you so much! I just checked it out--much less confusing than the Troy website! I'm really thinking about ordering this--it sounds great. I love my Firm barbell because it's short and the padding makes it really comfortable when it's on my shoulders. But I find now when I have heavy weights on it to do other things, especially dead rows, my grip feels uncomfortable. My hands are pretty small, and I think between the padded gloves I wear and the padding on the bar, it's just too thick to get a secure grip.

Thanks again for your help!

Marie :)

Question
I also have the Firm Padded Barbell , but with all this talk about the Troy lite I'm interested.
Would the quick release clamps that came with the Firm barbell be used with the Troy Lite?
I would only be interested in the bar itself as I already have plates. I notice that they sell it with the spring clamps, I really do like my quick release clamps though , so would they work well with the Troy bar?

Thanks for the info Steppinfool! I have the troy lite set but the heaviest plates I have are 7.5 pounds and I still have metal 10 pound plates. I love vinyl plates. They are a lot easier on tile floors! What a great price and it's an amazing shipping price!

Shywolf!

Yes, the Quik Release clamps work great with the Troy Lite. I don't like those spring clips. They kill my hands.

RE: Shywolf!

AhYes! Thanks as my hubby bought me those spring type clamps once and I agree they hurt my hands too... just to squeeze them to get on. Not good when you want to change plates fast as in PLB.I like my quick release ones they are fast and easy to use:)!

So I guess I'll be looking at ordering the Troy Lite barbell only minus the plates and clamps. I still love my Firm padded barbell but I do agree with all the comments about going heavy and not having a good enough grip on them for Upper Body work
