this question is for cathe or anyone
out there. i have 30 pounds that i have been desperately trying to lose for some time now. i work out five to six days per week varying my workouts.i concentrate on lotsof cardio and also concentrate on lots of weight workouts. i also try to keep my caloric intake under 1800 calories a
day. i seem to be having difficulty losing weight. i have already lost 45 pounds. the last 30 pounds seem to almost elusive. can any one please help? i dont know what else to do. also running is not an option because of knee problems. thank you for any advice that will help me reach my goals.
 
Personally, I never lose weight when I eat 1800 calories a day. It's really hard to know how many calories you should eat but it varies a lot from person to person. I'm rather small and 1800 calories is too much for me to lose weight. I eat about 1400 and I lose about 1.5 - 2 pounds per week. Some people have told me that's not calories but I'm not hungry and I do the workouts with no problems and I lose the right amount of weight so I think it's right for me. Someone posted a link to a site that calculates the amount of calories that you burn a day based on your age, sex, height, weight and activity level. I plugged my numbers in and it said that I burned about 2300 calories a day. If a pound of fat = 3500 calories then I need to create a 1000 calorie deficit to lose 2 pounds a week so I should eat about 1200 calories to lose 2 pounds a week. Actually I eat a little more which is why I don't lose quite 2 pounds a week. The thing is that everybody is different. I also lose more weight when I try to keep a balance between fat, carbs and protein. I don't do low carb but I try to keep carbs at about 50% of my calories per day and fat at about 20-25%. I use Fitday.com to calculate it. Plus if you've recently lost 45 pounds your metabolism could have slowed down a lot.

When you say that you concentrate on lots of weight workouts, are you going as heavy as you should to gain muscle mass? My observation has been that lots of women stick with light weights even though they could move to heavier weights in fear that they will bulk so they don't gain enough muscle to really increase their metabolism. Also this sounds ridiculous but it's possible to do too much cardio where you start to lose muscle which in turn slows down your metabolism. Have you looked into Body for Life or Body RX? I haven't tried either but I hear really good things about them and I think that they're right about the importance of strength training (going heavy) and not doing lots of cardio.

Maybe you should do S&H and go as heavy as you possibly can for three weeks. Do three cardio workouts a week making at least one of them really intense (Interval Max?). Then try to find out how many calories you really should be eating.
 
thanks jenniferann for repying to my question. i have been wondering if i am doing too much cardio. i have heard over and over that cardio is the answer.
i have been afraid to cut back on the cardio. i am going as heavy as i can on my weight work. maybe it is going to take some time for me to lose this
weight. could you find that website that calculates your daily caloric
intake? i would really appreciate it.

I think a lot of the things that we've heard about cardio being the answer for weight loss are wrong. I don't have the cites so bear with me but there was a study that showed the people who lifted weights lost more weight than the people who did aerobics + weights who in turn lost more weight than the people who did only aerobics. Then there was another study (again, don't have the cite) that showed that people who do moderate aerobic exercise (in the fat burning zone) didn't anymore weight than people who only dieted but the former lost a little more muscle than the people who only dieted.
