3-Day/60 mile Walk for the Cure

Hi Cathe -

I am doing the 3 Day/60 mile walk in October, I have been training for this and am up to some 5 mile walks on the weekends - it's amazing the different muscles you use walking than for step :).

I have been waiting to do STS while my elbow heals, and thought I'd like to start out in June with the 6 1/2 month STS rotation. It looks like I'll be in Meso 2 in August and September when some of the longer walks start (15 and 20 miles).

I am in pretty good shape, but I kind of think doing STS and training for the 3 day -and doing both well - will be a little too much for this mid-fortiesh body.. Perhaps it's best if I continue the strength training I've been doing and wait to do STS as a treat for finishing the 3-day? Any opinions?

Thanks for your time !

Hi Ellejay - not Cathe here but thought I'd chime in. I've done (and trained for) the 3-Day, and I've also done STS. IMO, yes, I do honestly think doing both would be too much - and this comes from a DIEHARD workout fiend. I will push myself to the limit. I think the 2 together would be over the limit - for me anyway. I'm also in that mid-40's category.

I trained for the 3-day like they suggest, and my 2 walking buddies and I kept a QUICK pace, coming in at just over 4 miles an hour for the whole 20 miles for each of the 3 days. Now I will say that at the end I was absolutely fine and even did PUB the Monday after. But PUB is not STS, and Meso 2 and Meso 3 require a lot of focus and muscle fatigue. Just my opinion, but I think I'd stick with the regular strength training you mention and save STS for after you recover from the 3 day. Then you'll be rested and ready to take it on.

Good luck with the 3-day - you'll have a blast!

Hello! I have nothing to say about your training, but may I please offer a huge THANK YOU for participating in this walk. From all of us who are breast cancer survivors, we truly appreciate everything you do to help us. I'm not sure if you are apart of this group - but I wanted to be sure to let you know how grateful I am for people like you and all those who raise funds to cure that horrible disease!

:D

Lorrie,

Thank you very much! These forums are great :), I knew someone would have done both and give me an honest opinion..

Lisa,

I am not a survivor, but I walk for all of you that are - you all are the strong ones :) . It seems I know too many people that are going through treatment, are survivors, and I would love to see this cancer gone from all of our lives.

Thanks again!

I've done the walk twice, both times in Philly. Enjoy our training! You'll meet so many fantastic people during the coming months :)

Truthfully, unless you have lots of time to dedicate every day to fitness, I think the pressure to keep up with the STS schedule might be too much. You'll be walking lots of hours. My friend and I kept a 4 mi/hr pace -- with bathroom breaks, it would take us 2.5 hours a night. And if you do "official" training walks, you'll find they move much slower (about 3 mi/hr).

I'd save STS for October -- you can start it with STS Cardio!!! What a perfect treat to yourself!

Good luck with your training and fundraising! The 3-Day is an amazing experience. You may already know about this, but get some Body Glide for your feet. It comes in tube like deodorant. It's good stuff!!

I wish I could do it this year, but I'm pregnant -- due September 20. I think the training would be too much this summer, and the idea of walking 60 miles 4 weeks after giving birth is NOT appealing!

Hi Pennstater,

I am doing the avon 2 day breast cancer walk in october too. What is body glide? Does it protect your feet from walking so much? Because my feet are what I will be concerned about. Thanks in advance.

Hi Chrissy - I heard about that walk that you and one of my dearest BFFs Gayle (banslug) are contemplating. YAY YOU!

Body Glide is an anti-chafing protectant - I could not have made it thru the 3-day without it. A lot of distance runners use it and you can find it at any running store - think I got mine at Dicks Sporting Goods. I think for me the hardest part of the 3-dday was finding the right combination of shoes and socks to minimize blisters. Then, it was a matter of treating the feet during the walk. Every mornig I applied body glide and Caldesene baby powder (prevents / treat diaper rash in babies) to my feet before putting on my Thorlo hero socks. I carried a second pair of socks, the glide and powder in my camel back during the walk, and then at lunch I would change socks, re-glide and re-powder. By the end of my walk I had one teeny blister and I am convinced that was from walking the last 20 miles in a downpour of rain so my feet were soaked. (Yes, it was a cold 57 degree pouring rain for the whole last 20.) But BodyGlide, powder, right shoe/sock combo and lots of training made it a comfortable walk for me. Good luck to you!

Thanks Lorrie for the info. Yes I check in with Gayle everyday. I asked her to do it with me.:D

Body Glide is what Lorrie said :)

I got mine at Dick's. It looks a deodorant tube. I didn't like the Thorlos socks; they were too thick for me. I think I tried about 5 different types of socks before going with Champion moisture wicking ones. And definitely take extra socks as Lorrie suggested!

During the summer months when you get so sweaty on long training walks that your shorts start to stick to you (!), the Body Glide is also great on the inner thighs. And some of my girlfriends with big boobs swear by it on their upper/inner arms and under the bra (they are runners, and I don't have big boobs, so I can't speak to BG's efficacy in this area LOL).

I did the Avon walk two years ago and agree on finding the right sneaker/shoe combination. If you have the opportunity, go to a store that specializes in running shoes to determine what type of shoe you need. I trained in two pair of shoes and used the 2nd pair on the 2nd day. I found that WrightSock coolmesh socks prevented me from getting blisters. They are 2 ply so that seemed to prevent so much rubbing against my feet.

Be prepared to lose a few toenails. I wasn't prepared for that and walked in May, so I had to paint fake ones one for the summer. At least you're walking toward the end of sandal weather!

Good luck with your fundraising and walk, walk and then walk some more :)
