Yoohoo, enablers & enablees! Valslides

Cathlete
Hey there, shoppers! :) It's a new month, a new week, not Lent yet (LAINIE! ;-)) and I've got an interesting new gadget to share with y'all. }(

I was in NC this weekend visiting my sister, and while we were shopping on Saturday I searched for some Mindy Mylrea-style gliding discs, which I haven't been able to find in Atlanta. My sis isn't into fitness at all, so I had to describe to her what I was looking for. No luck.

Well, Sunday morning my sister (sweetie that she is) slipped out for an hour while I was showering and dressing, and I discovered when she got back that she'd gone to search at the ONE nearby Target we hadn't gone to on Saturday. She hadn't found the Mindy discs, but she did find something similar that we hadn't seen anywhere else, and she insisted on giving it to me as a VERY nice gift. It's a kit manufactured by GoFit with a pair of oval gliding discs called "Valslides".

This gadget was developed by a "Hollywood trainer" named Valerie Waters (hence the name Valslides). Here's the website:

http://www.valslide.com

They're pretty cool. The discs are bright green ovals, big enough to plant your entire foot on. The side that you'd put your foot or hand on has a thick foam "bed" for grip and comfort. The kit came with a thick felted cover that kinda looks like a shower cap -- you'd put this over the disc if you were using it on hardwoods. There is also an instructional DVD that I haven't previewed yet, a drawstring storage/travel bag, and a nice laminated wall chart illustrating 3 levels (beginner, intermed, adv) of exerciss using the discs. My sister gave me the receipt just in case these didn't work for me, so I know the kit was $24.99.

I haven't tried these yet but will report. Have any of you tried them? Whatcha think??

I'm anxious to hear if anyone likes them as well. I saw them the other day and though they might be a good substitute for the "paper plates" in STS.

Awwww Man.... I really don't want to look, but I REALLY do want to look.

I guess I deserve this Kathy since I was egging you on about the kettlebell!!

ETA: Okay, I looked. Now I'm going to have to go to Target tonight and see if they have them. They look cool. THANKS KATHY!!!

Gayle - c'mon...you know you wanna look!!! Just a little peek...

I'm going to "invent" some painfully obvious sort of exercise equipment to sell at Target and get rich on all you suckers (so I can pay for STS of course) :7

>I prefer to think of myself as an extremely
>open-minded shopper. ;-)

LOL! :p

The discs look pretty cool, but I guess I'm not totally sure what we will need them for...??

Katie,

Cathe has said that she's using paper plates for several things in STS, including side and back lunges. There are pix of some of this stuff on the blog. Of course, I could use paper plates. ;-) But being the gadget junkie that I am, I thought I'd see if I could find a good, cheap deal on the Mindy gliding discs which a lot of people here seem to like. And that's how I ended up with the Valslides. I would never have even heard of them if my little sister hadn't bought them to surprise me!

If you go to the Valslides website and look at the suggested exercises, many of them are things Cathe has talked about using paper plates for. I think the general idea is that the never-ending tension on your muscles caused by the gliding motion just cooks you through and through!!!

Hope this helps!

I actually ended up ordering the Gliding Discs last week (I'm getting all psyched up for STS! bring it on!!), but these look really cool!:)

I saw these at Target a few weeks ago. When I saw the pictures on the blog of the lunges with paper plates, I thought those discs would be perfect for STS (which I still have to preorder). I think I will go back to Target this weekend and buy them! Thanks Kathy, you enabled me :) :)

Honestly...I don't mean to be a pooh but what is so special about these thangs that one should be tempted to part with $30+ when paper plates do the job? Maybe I be illin' :7

Nah, Beavs, you're not illin'. :7 The fact is that paper plates would do just fine -- maybe even better on some surfaces, I would think! Unless you're a gadget junkie with $25+ that you can spare, Valslides and Mindy Mylrea gliding discs and the like aren't gonna (and shouldn't) tempt you at all.

Now me, I'm a total, hopeless fitness gadget junkie, so I am always drawn to spending any dab of spare cash I have on stuff like these things. And then I do USE almost all of the gadgets I buy. I did feel a little guilty accepting the Valslides from my sister as a gift, since it's not like they're Plate Mates or dumbbells or something that actually has an almost irreplaceable function. Real fancy paper plates is all they are when you come right down to it! ;-) But my sis knows me and how I do love a new workout toy, and she was delighted that I was delighted. So she enjoyed the giving, and I sure enjoyed the receiving!! :)

By the way, I tried the Valslides today with a couple sets of back lunges and side lunges. They worked very well in my carpeted workout space, and my backside is sooooooooooooooooooo sore!!!!!

So what you are saying is that these little gadgets sort of get you fired up to keep training....well....I still think you're weird :7 ;-) but whatever works for you is good.

whispering.....hey Kathy....I STILL HAVEN'T PEEKED! LOL
