Yogurt question......

bceogirl

Cathlete
I have a question about what type of yogurt really is the healthiest .(probably not *healthfoodish..organic and expensive* What can I find that I should choose in my regular grocery store ?

I've read many places that it's best NOT to eat the flavored yogurts. I usually eat Dannon Light & Fit.
Well, I recently decided I would switch to plain, nonfat and just scoop it into a bowl.....not as convienient but worth it to save on sugar , etc...
WELL, here I am comparing the labels and my flavored yogurt is 0 fat, 60 calories, 7 sugar .
The All Natural Brown Cow Plain nonfat yogurt is 110 calories, and 15 grams of sugar !!!!!!!!
I did check labels before I bought and the 15 gm fat was the lowest I could find. I got home and see I'd have been better off sticking to the sweetened , flavored stuff.

What am I missing ?

Thanks! Becky

Hi there;

The best nutritional profile I've seen on yogurt is probably the Fage 0%; it's increasingly available at mainstream supermarkets, but is can usually be found at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. The single-serve containers have 80 calories, 13 grams of protein, and something like 6 grams of sugar. Half of the big container has 120 calories, 20 grams of protein, and 9 grams of sugar. Also, it tastes like ambrosia. Add some fruit or the sweetener of your choice and you will be in yogurt heaven.

I just googled it and here's the link: http://www.fageusa.com/0_yogurt_info.html

I don't eat dairy anymore and the best soy yogurt I've found so far is Wildwood's plain unsweetened, which also has a very respectable nutrition panel:

I have to travel about 10 miles to the ultimate hippy-food store to find it, though. I'm curious to see what others have tracked down!

Thank you Dee for your response and the links.
Fage sounds really good.
I'm about an hour away from the closest Trader Joe's, but will check a couple places nearby first. I'd really like to try it.
I love soy smoothies, tofu, soybeans and recently bought soy flour to make bread, but have never tried soy yogurt. Thank I'll give it a try if I can find your Wildwood brand.

I guess the thing I still don't understand ....is why would an organic, PLAIN , nonfat yogurt have so much sugar ? Where is it coming from ?
I understand it in flavored yogurts, but if it's PLAIN....??

Anyone ??

Thanks again!
Becky

Hi Becky:

The number for sugars on the nutrition label is the sum of sucrose, fructose, maltose, galactose and lactose. Lactose is the naturally occurring sugar found in milk. The lowfat plain yogurt you are buying is probably good quality with high milk solids and therefore, milk sugar. Lactose does not produce the same insulin response as other sugars. Your flavored Dannon has lower sugar because it uses artificial sweetener and lower milk solids to reduce the calorie content.

Hope that helps.

Thank you Sue !!!

I appreciate your response. That does make sense!
I'll stick with the plain kind then. I really enjoyed it with fresh blackberries and sometimes some yummy trail mix crunch cereal sprinkled on top.

i do not buy flavored yogurt because of the high fructose cornsyrup. instead i buy plain yogurt and stir in some stewed blueberries and sugar.

I'm adding berries to plain lowfat yogurt, no sugar, no artificial sweetener. It's an acquired taste I've gotten used to - but I do add A LOT of berries.

Nancy- I can eat Fage 0% as is. But in the morning since I eat fruit anyway, I combine it Fage 0%. I bought some 2% by mistake last week and it was unbelievable. A few of the 2% will be in my fridge for indulgent snacking. ( Lara bars need a break sometimes)

Yes, you must try the Fage yogurt. Even plain it tastes all smooth and creamy and no bitterness like with some other plain yogurts.

Fage Total is absolutely the BEST. It is more expensive than other brands (I think it's $1.79 at SuperTarget) but totally worth it. I have one every morning. Of course, I eat the full fat version because I try to stick to a traditional/pre-industrial diet as much as possible. It's worth the 260 calories and with some whole wheat toast keeps me from being hungry until lunch.

Hi Ecossaise,

Welcome to the boards. :)

Is the traditional/pre-industrial diet you mention sort of akin to the "Slow Food" movement?

Gayle-

Thanks for the welcome! I've been reading the forums for a really long time but felt it was time to start posting, especially to encourage someone to try the best yogurt ever. :) I am a big fan of the Slow Food movement (also really like the book Real Food by Nina Planck). I'm also working on an MA in History (17th century England), so historical precedent appeals to me! I really worry DH about food expenditure, though! Thankfully, it's still cheaper than eating out!

I am a big Fage fan.....but beware....it doesn't really taste like typical yogurt...it has more of a sour cream taste.

Nancy, in return for excellent salad descriptions I'll offer the following:

If you take your Fage (whichever % floats your boat - I go for the zero) and drizzle over it just a whiff, a hint, a smidge of honey, and then stir, you will have created a little moment of health food nirvana for yourself.

There is something about the luxurious smoothness of the texture that makes this stuff so special. It's lovely with anything, really.

A friend of mine likes to put a spoonful of juice-sweetened pumpkin butter in her Fage 2%. She says it tastes like pumpkin pie.

I tried it in my soy yogurt and it was yummy.
