I have recently added yoga to my routine and am loving it! Still a newbie however. I have been doing Crunch Fat Burning Yoga with Sara Ivanhoe. Do you guys consider this to be power yoga? When I see the words "fat burning yoga" on a video, does this mean the same as "power yoga"? The titles are misleading sometimes.

Hi, Lisa! Actually, the words "fat burning" on ANY exercise video can be translated into "ca-CHING". I think it's a marketing ploy rather than an accurate description when applied a non-aerobic workout.

I know very little about yoga, either the classical practice or its many million New Millenium derivations; you may want to access one of the several prominent yoga journals to get more good information. I've heard that Rodney Yee and Rod Stryker produce excellent yoga vids/DVD's for power and muscular development. I also believe the Living Arts company (www.livingarts.com {I think}) markets a wide variety of yoga, Pilates and other "mind-body" workouts.

Good luck!

I have Crunch's Joy of Yoga and Fat burning Yoga. IMHO Fat Burning yoga is NOT Power Yoga. While it does get your heart rate up a little, there is no fat burning benefit. I agree with Aquajock, it a ploy. Just like yoga for weightloss yada, yada, yada...... Yoga is awesome and I love it, but that particular video is more or less just alot of vinyasa. A bunch of movements linked to breath.
The hardest yoga videos I have found are Yoga Zone's Power Yoga and Bryan Kest's video (although I don't like his style) In fact, if you want I'll give you my Bryan Kest tape and you can see what you think for yourself. Let me know.....

Hi Lisa and all my Cathe friends:

I'm sorry to say that I tried to keep in shape doing yoga for a couple of years with dismal results! Maybe some people can do it, but I think it takes more time than I care to devote.

Don't get me wrong, I love yoga. But, for fat burning nothing beats cardio. I have never been able to get my heart rate up for very long doing yoga. I think it is wonderful in conjunction with Cathe's tapes. My favorite yoga tapes are the Rodney Yee Power series (there are 3) They are the vinyasa flow style and are beautifully filmed.

I definitely recommend taking a few yoga classes. Slight adjustments in your asanas (positions) by an instructor can make a big difference. Good luck.

I don't really consider yoga to be fat burning, regardless of the video. Some videos/classes are advanced and really tough, but I don't see them burning calories like cardio does.

The earlier post is right, lots of videos say they're "fat burning" when they're not really. I used to fall for it and think videos would do all the things they claimed- yeah right!

Yoga is a great workout for your mind and body though so keep doing it. There are many benefits. Just don't rely on it to lose weight.

Hi Lisa,
I agree with everyone, 'fat burning' is a ploy to sell more vhs/dvds! BUT it doesn't mean workouts with 'fat burning' in the title are not good. I have Crunch fat burning Yoga, too. I don't think it is the same type of program as a power yoga program would be. Power yoga I think, is a lot more muscularly powerful and difficult. I enjoy yoga routines such as the Crunch yoga series (Joy of Yoga, Fat burning Yoga and Candlelight Yoga) and some Yoga Zone's, Karen Voight and Kathy Smith. As you can see, I'm not full-on 'into' serious yoga, I like to use it to get the kinks out. You can find Power Yoga tapes by the likes of Baron Baptiste and Bryan Kest. Kathy smith also has New Yoga Challenge with Rod Stryker, who is a professional yoga guy (I guess that would make him a yogi). this qualifies as power yoga, I believe. I had the VHS once and knew it was not what I wanted!

I do Yoga five times a week, therfore I have a lotta Yoga videos. My reason for doing Yoga is more for rehab from the cardio and the weight training. I'm serious.

I do like 20-30 minutes of Yoga each time, sometimes 45 minutes. I have Baron Baptise and all the Crunch Yoga videos too. The Crunch Fat Burning Yoga is more light Power Yoga kinda an intro to it so to speak. Baron Baptise is the real thing.

Also don't be confused by Power Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga. The Power Yoga is more a lot of sun saluatations and flowing poses and traditional ab work along with some bridge poses and table tops. Ashtanga however is an anceient system that requires a lotta strength and gymnastics (so to speak). Some people even go to India to study serious Ashtanga Yoga.

I wanted to tell you that over at http://videofitness.com there are tons of discussions and post on Yoga under the General Discussion and under Challenges and Checkins there is a weekly Yoga discussion where everyone reports what they are doing.

If your not already accessing this source do so, it's great and you can find out a lot about Yoga from people that do tons of it.

I try to do yoga once per week - just for mind and flexibility, as well as a little strength training. I like Bryan Kest's 3 video set and I rotate those. I think it's good to help with your balance too.
good luck!
